PC Xbox 360 PS3

Illusion Softworks releases four new images of Mafia 2. We don't really know if these screenshots are truly representative of the actual state of the game, but it still looks right down awesome.

If this is what the game truly looks like, brilliant ...

But I think it may just be too good to be true.

Well it is the PC shots and graphically it looks better than GTIV. So I think it is possible to look like that.

Are these shots labeled as PC shots when distributed? I only ask because it would tell how committed they are to decent console versions. The console versions were a complete afterthought for Mafia 1, of course they came later too.

I wonder if the game will have changing time of day, because with those soft shadows and the view distance in these shots, it's unlikely any PC could pull of that (soft shadows for the entire city at that resolution, using shadow mapping presumably). Otherwise if there is no time of day and the environment shadows are just lightmaps of course that's possible.

It could turn out like Crysis where they scaled down many effects and give the reason that no current PC could handle those effects, too.

the crysis of sandbox games

but given the platform .....rockstar utilized every drop of next gen power for gta

you just cant have these types of graphics on a console....its impossible

Just because GTA IV looks inferior, doesn't mean that X360/PS3 can't handle this.

The city is alot smaller then GTA IV's(not to say the one in Mafia 2's is small but GTA IV's is huge) allowing for the graphical boost. I have no idea why its so hard for people to understand how game development works.

Rockstar might've used every bit of power but not all the potential of the consoles. In the same context that both Gears of War 1 and 2 are using all the power but GOW2 uses it in a more efficient way.

Mafia 2 and GTA IV have very different engines that were built with different objectives. GTA IV's engine was built to have huge landscapes while Mafia 2's engine didn't have to cater to large landscapes so they freed up more power for graphical improvements.

GTAIV does a lot of stuff that this game probably won't do. Deforming car crash physics, the new AI systems, dynamic IK based animations...

All of those things in GTAIV are going to be WAY more impressive when seen in motion...

hmm, Ive noticed in those images that car plates are AAAAAA, I got a feeling you will be able to customise them with your own? Maybe something to do with online multiplayer? :)

In other images other cars have a plate number etc, but the car belonging to THE player has just AAAAAA....

Which will make Mafia 2 even more obsolete if it doesn't include those features.

I'm just stunned! It looks so great. I absolutely loved the first one. And I'm pretty sure this one will be even better. Graphics look already good so early in the development and I'm sure they will stay this way. I just hope the game got the same linear storyline as the first game.

from what i see in these shots, GTA IV has more stuff going on. like more pedestrians and more cars. thats not much of an improvement u might think but when you add rocket launchers and a shit load of police raining down on you, u will see.

Man what a stupid way at looking at game development. Having or not having any features doesn't make a game anymore obsolete. Mafia 2 and GTA IV are different games that will have different features.
