Xbox 360 PS3

It's been a long time since the last public appearence of Midnight Club L.A., next iteration of Rockstar's well known driving series. We still don't know if the game uses GTA4's engine, but it doesn't prevent us from enjoying the nice cars featured in the eight new images we just found.

Looks great, and I like the MC series, I hope this one retains all the shortcuts of the previous games. Car graphics are amazing, I love that car paint sparkle effect that I've only seen in a few other games (and it wasn't possible before this gen).

I think people are probably going to be comparing this a lot to Burnout Paradise.

Technically the GTA4 engine is actually the Table Tennis engine...

Never really enjoyed arcade racers since the GOOD ol' Need for Speed days on the PS1.

I tried Midnight Club on the original Xbox... didn't impress me or strike a chord with me. This one does look awesome graphically. It'll have to do a lot more than Wow me with graphics to justify a purchase.

I think it looks pretty bad, the close ups of the cars are stunning, but then when you look at screen shot 3, you realise you'll never see any of that anyway. The environments look terrible, I think the road texture in shot 3 is shocking.

The environments look better than Test Drive Unlimited's at least. Will have to see more shots and videos to compare to something like Burnout Paradise. Of course you'll see the car details from time to time, doesn't make sense that you wouldn't see them...

I just never really see the cars up close enough in games like PGR or test drive to justify how much detail is on them. The two grills on the saleen for example (in shot two) the metal one will just be a ass of grey / black twinkling pixels, and the plastic one will be a few straight lines that will be aliasing a bit here and there. I simply don't think they need it and should spend their budget on the track.

This game is going to let you customize the INTERIOR of your car, I'm sure they'll work an above average amount of special shots into the game (along with internal car views of course). I have a Game Informer issue with a few of these shots and information (Ghostbusters issue), and I believe the polygonal car detail in this is several times that of stuff like PGR3/4 or Test Drive, I'll have to check the numbers again, but I believe it was around 200k polygons per car in this one.

Looking at GT5P, which also has incredible models and nice effects, it really does make a large visual difference, even when not RIGHT UP against the car.

[edit : just checked, GT5P cars are ~200k polys, this game are ~100k, PGR4 are ~90k, but these seem better modelled, so it doesn't seem they're throwing away details on the cars at all...]

[edit 2 : if you're worried about textures being wasted as you said in those grills and meshes, those are easily able to be tiled probably, not much RAM wasted there...]

I thought he might be talking about 1 as well, because I agree with you. However, according to the internets, MC1 only was released for PS2...

Midnight 2 on xbox1 was AWESOME.... It was a very fun and quite pure racer at heart, even with all the crazy short cuts and mental ramps

But... Midnight 3 was terrible... full of horrific gimmicks and so much neon graphics it was just horrible to play

Wonder if the roads are mapped off real streets here in LA and just how many miles of streets are available. It'd be pretty awesome to race around on the 210 freeway and ride into Old Town Pasadena =D

Except the nice metallic effects on the cars, nothing special. It's all about gameplay, and I didn't like it in the old MC.... But when it's better as Burnout, perhaps a purchase for me, 'caus Burnout sucks.

MC3 was a bit lamed up, and although MC2 suffered a bit from the utter opposite, I still thought 2 was fucking awesome. I hope they take pages from the MC2 book of not having a completely borked progression system where saving up and buying the best car breaks the whole game, MC3 styleee, but at the same time tune the difficulty to be a little more forgiving to begin with.

This is really the last of the gang to die now that the Rush series was fucked up to no end, Full Auto 2 a missed opportunity of giga-normous proportions, and Burnout Paradise is essentially a different game alltogether. Here's keeping fingers crossed for this.

I'll be pissed if there's no shortcuts through skyscrapers.

Yea if you think about it thats exactly what made Midnight Club and RUSH so great- all the crazy ramp shortcuts on top of buildings and through skyscrapers.

Rush 2049 was awesome.

I enjoyed MC2, which is the only game in the franchise that I've played. I'd be willing to give this one a shot.

Yeah Rush 2049 on the Dreamcast and in the arcades was BRILL. Years later I got the Midway Arcade Treasures 3 compilation for Xbox, just for that game. I was devastated by the magnitude of the LA Rush cockup.

I though the previous installment was one of the most frustrating games I've ever played. Still enjoyed it to some degree, but often enough is was annoying as hell!

Game looks alright. Lighting is nice, other than that I'll have to see some proper gameplay footage.

I think they should just do a remake of MC2 with the original soundtrack intact. I still cherish the moments i was racing through the paris catacombs with silverscreen showerscene on the virtual radio. O nostalgia
