PS2

Earlier this week, we were announcing the development of NiGHTS: Into Dreams on the Playstation 2. Today, Sega sends us some not really convincing new images of this 1996 remake. The japanese release date is set for February 21, 2008. The european release date has not been announced yet.

It's not a port, look at the character models and the textures; the models are at least significantly improved. The resolution doesn't look like it's changed much from the original 320x240, which is a shame.

From Gamespot's latest preview, it seems Sega screwed it up. According to Gamespot, it's worse than the 1st game.

I never understood what made the first one great, but then again i played it last year for the first time. maybe it was super awesome for it's time. ANd if this is a remake it's severely shitty, because it looks almost identical to the original. Escept for the first pic. The textures are slightly improved too i guess.

I was going to write pearls to the pigs when I heard about this gem being ported to, of all things, the ps2 but you guys are making my point all by yourselves.

Its just many of the gaming-defining games that the Playstation-crowd never saw, tried or even heard of. How about an analog stick for starters, superb innovation in gameplay and bosses, pioneering 3d work and pushing the Saturn beyond what was thought possible and more. Oh yes, you had a still rendered background and a zombie, I forgot.

I got the original Nights when it was new on Saturn, and I was never a fan of the game, besides Soft Museum.

Ahh yes but that zombie game went on to have many sequels all of which were sucessful, where were Nights sequels... hmm ?

I never played Nights personally, but if it was so good, why did it not have sequels ?

My guess would be that Nights is one of those games that people who loved sega back in the day holds in high regard but most gamers never took much notice of. So, a small, but hardcore, fanbase resulting in shoddy sales. But like i said earlier, i'm jut guessing.

Nah, it was a fantastically innovative game for its time and was a hit all around. Yeah, the gameplay is simple, but still loads of fun. I can see how it's boring to some of you though, especially to the guys that didn't play this game back in the day.

Anyway, this looks like a minimal effort remake here. Models and textures could be touched up more, but it would be even better if this was released on 360/PS3. Ps2 on any HDTV doesn't look good at all. Might as well play on the good old Saturn.

Because Yuji Naka though it wasn't necessary, because they couldn't improve anything for a sequel besides the graphics.

That's how good Nights was/is :)

And besides, the best games are stand-alone.

I still have the original and play it a few times a year.
Character models and geometry looks much smoother, and the textures look better also.

I just hope the the 3D pad controls translate well to the PS2.

Yeah it's hands down the most tasteful update I've seen in a while. The adjustments made to make it look better are slight and subtle, but really do adress the worst "tech issues" brought on by limitations back then. They don't just go completely nuts and ruin the original appeal.

And by original appeal I mean remaining faithful to the exact look of the original. For nostalgia I find that more important than upgrading visuals. For that sort of thing, there's Journey of Dreams.

It's also exciting to see both that the saturn original is in here, and that there are some custom menus that seem to indicate Christmas Nights like features. Oh and just generally, the PS2 analogues should easily mimic the floatyness of the saturn pad best.

I'm satisfied - and excited that there seems to be a general attemt to revigorate the PS2 (as if it was ever really dying :O), because I reckon that generation has enough potential and qualities to warrant sticking around. That way we'll get to play more than just three games per year in the future aswell.

With this and Yakuza 2 on the way it's probably the best (bordering on only) place to enjoy good Sega games too. :P

Wow, what's up with those pics? Only the player models improved a bit, everything else looks almost exactly like the original saturn version. Heck, the Nights pinball minigame in sonic adventure 1 looks better than this

I thought it would loook somewhat like the stunning (ish) NiGHTS graphics in the Sega superstars eye toy game. Any news on a UK release? I own the Saturn version, I just hate the stupid saturn analogue pad. I got a Saturn with NiGHTS off ebay for £25. I'm after a DualShock2 to Saturn converter device.
