Not really impressive at all. The characters look horrible, the environments just look flat and dull...also i have a feeling that the gameplay will prettymuch be composed of tapping a button like there's no tomorrow.

Somebody has to be buying these games but I don't know who they are? I've rented a dynasty warriors game before an put it down after trying it for a few hours and this looks like it's going to be more of the same. Are these just really popular in Japan?

Dynasty Warriors/Samurai Warriors/Gundam Warriors are some of the hottest games to sell in Japan actually. They're always topping the charts when they get released. Americans might not like it, but the Japanese eat it up like nothing.

From Magic-Box top-selling in Japan: Console software sales for the week of August 20 - 26, 2007:

1. Sengoku Musou 2 Moushouden [Samurai Warriors 2 Xtreme Legends] (PS2, Koei) - 182,484
2. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates (NDS, Square Enix) - 177,845
3. Gyakuten Saiban 3 Best Price (NDS, Capcom) - 56,787
4. Mario Party 8 (Wii, Nintendo) - 48,803
5. Ganbaru Watashi no Kakei Diary (NDS, Nintendo) - 23,678
6. Dragoneer's Aria (PSP, Nippon Ichi) - 23,617
7. SD Gundam G Generation Cross Drive (NDS, Bandai Namco) - 19,844
8. J-League Winning Eleven 2007 Club Championship (PS2, Konami) - 19,344
9. Donkey Kong Jungle Climber (NDS, Nintendo) - 18,583
10. Wii Sports (Wii, Ninendo) - 18,223
11. New Super Mario Bros. (NDS, Nintendo)
12. Hajimete no Wii [Wii Play] (Wii, Nintendo)
13. Bikkuri-Man Daijiten (NDS, 3OCLOCK)
14. Hayate no Gotoku! (NDS, Konami)
15. Miru Chikara wo Jissen de Kitearu: DS Ganriki Training (NDS, Nintendo)
16. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (NDS, Nintendo)
17. Minna no Golf 5 [Hotshot Golf 5] (PS3, Sony)
18. Mario Kart DS (NDS, Nintendo)
19. Kawashima Ryuuta Kyouju Kanshuu: Motto Nouo Kitaeru Otona DS Training (NDS, Nintendo)
20. Oide yo Doubutsu no Mori [Animal Crossing: Wild World] (NDS, Nintendo)

ManThatYouFear: Depends on what you mean by "good". From a developers standpoint i would see a game that sells as rather a good investment of my time, and therefore a good game. And obviously people like them, so they have to be good in some way. I don't understand what there is to like about games like these but there has to be something?

The gaming industry is approaching the movie industry in how top-selling doesnt necessarily mean good, at all. Good means critically acclaimed, highly regarded, cream of the crop, advancing the art and technology of the industry etc.

Just because a zillion people went to see a movie doesnt mean its good in any shape or form. It can be mediocre or even garbage (and usually the reviews reflect it). As long as it has a multimillion dollar marketing budget and sexy greased up people or a popular franchise, it will sell.

Just because hundreds of thousands bought a game doesnt mean its worthy of the plastic it was stamped on (or flashed, in the case of the NDS).

Looking at that list I can only take comfort in how poorly the PS3 is doing. Not EVERYTHING sells by the boatload no matter how much you hype it. But that is offset by garbage like Wii Sports and possibly the 15 NDS games I've never heard of and can only assume arent all critically acclaimed.

I think you guys are all looking at it too closely. Japanese players have different tastes and Dynasty Warriors formula happens to be one of them. It's just like how Americans will eat up certain types of games no matter what. Can you guys remember the last shooter in this generation that got lower than a 7.0 rating from most reviewers?

Koei knows they have job security because they can easily measure how much they're going to make on each game, it always tops at #1 at least for a few weeks.

It's not like we don't have others that don't do the same. Look at Nintendo, they know that whatever they push out with a Mario brand on it will sell X amounts, same with Metroid, Zelda, etc. Look at people like Capcom who continually push out Megaman or Konami with Castlevania. All the games in the series are essentially the same, yet they make a fixed amount of money and sell a lot of units regardless.

Maybe there needs to be a major overhaul of the Game Developers Choice Awards or D.I.C.E. awards. They are the most prestigious awards in the industry right now in my opinion but, they don’t reach enough into popular culture to really have an impact on making video games seen as an art form and not just a child’s pastime. Take the comparison of the GDC Awards to the Oscars. Both are prestigious within their industry but very few people follow the GDC Awards while I would bet that a vast majority have heard of the Oscars. Many movie goers hold Oscar award winners up as people who are the very best at what they do in movies whether as actors or directors or make-up artists. I always hear in previews for movies “From the Academy Award winning/nominated Tom Hanks/Jack Nicholson/Kate Winslet/Steven Spielberg” or something like that. You very rarely hear something comparable like for video games. Where are the “From Clover Studios/the writers of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic/game director Tim Schafer.” Maybe if something bigger and more publicized then the GDC Awards or D.I.C.E. awards was common knowledge then gamers would make “better” purchases and game developers would make “better” games. What qualifies as “better” I don’t know but it would be interesting to watch the industry evolve? Still, give some mass publicity to games and developers that can’t afford the Halo Hype but nevertheless deliver an exceptional experience. I would watch a show like this. I spend more money and time playing video games then movies so why not see what impartial critics judge to be the cream of the crop. See if I there is a game that warrants a try that I didn’t know about before. Also, don’t do the award show like the G4 Video Game Awards. They are always just so bad it’s painful to watch.
