Three days away from the american release of its musical cashcow, Activision finally drops the bomb. Kurt Cobain, his torn jeans, his fluffy pull-over, in Guitar Hero V. To celebrate the news, Courtney Love got a big check. We got two screenshots and a short video in which a sad excuse for a virtual king of grunge mimics Smells like teens spirit and Lithium. Rock'n roll.

Well, it's nice that they're loading GH5 with STUFF, but I also wonder if they have any creative vision or direction at all. They just seem to be blindly grabbing people to left and right that have anything to do with music.

Its identity used to be something along the lines of Brutal Legend, to be there for the manly men who listened - and listen - to hard rock through the ages, but when Harmonix dropped it to create a more varied, all round music experience with Rock Band it seems like GH just spun out of control.

I'd really like for it to find its footing and carve out its own identity, but this just seems like some kind of misdirected attempt to sooorta.. kiinda please a big audience. I dunno, I don't really get it. Nicest feature I've seen in this from a presentation perspective is avatar support.

Whats the difference between Activision selling Cobains, and Nirvana's image to us, and EA selling the beatles? Its not like the nirvana estate hasnt "sold out" placing nirvana songs in guitar hero before.

Its all about the grundge "sell out" mentality that Cobain was supposed to be against... the same cobain that moved from sub-pop to a major label in order to sell his songs.

Its a persona, an act, that was sold to you. So you might aswell enjoy his songs that have been sold to you in this franchise for the past 4years..either on the games, or as dlc. And enjoy a digital dead icon puppettered to make money for his DAUGHTER.. which he selflessly left behind as he tasted the barrel of a shotgun.

Well it's weird because I could make a case for having dudes in for fans and argue that even for fans it shouldn't represent a sellout but rather just be a nice homage.. but truth is I don't really feel that way even if artists I like were in there. In fact, I was puzzled already by GH3 and its inclusion of Slash and others.

The Beatles is one thing, that game is crafted with love and attention to the band and their history. I can see how that's a kick for fans - hell it's a kick for me and I'm only a casual Beatles fan, but just sticking a likeness into a game like this.. I just.. I don't really see the appeal.

As I was saying earlier it just seems to me that GH has kinda forgot what it wants to be.. Ironically the zombie modes in WAW and this gives me a similar vibe, like the guys who took over never really got the original vision or shared it, and now are just pretty uncomfortable in the shoes they're trying to fill. I think GH can find its way eventually, but I think they really need to take a step back and look at it proper to figure out what they wanna do with it.

I'm mainly an electronic music fanatic myself such as techno (real techno that is), ambient, breaks, triphop, electronic jazz etc, but I definitely like some of the stuff Nirvana have made. I like that raw voice of Cobain and the tunes of certain tracks are brilliant...

I actually thought that the difference was: The Beatles are in Rock Band. Everyone knows that Harmonix gets relative pass compared to Activision/Neversoft.

If you actually look at the Beatles game proper you'll see that there's a difference in commitment too. That game is actually pretty awesome looking, and it's certainly nowhere near a quick cash-in.
