We're a week late but here's finally in good quality the campaign trailer of Bethesda's upcoming FPS. DOOM will release worldwide on May 13th for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Definitely not as high contrast as its predecessors it seems. It would be great if the main character was tired of being there, or doing this and pissed off at everything...

I frikkin' love the look of this and as a fan of arcade style shooters, this is day one for me for sure. Not expecting depth with this one, just fun.

I can only explain it, I can't comprehend it for you.

If the main character was tired of being there. I.e. just as bored and sick of having to kill the same fucking alien-bastards from hell that he did (and everyone else) in the last 3 games. I.e. sick of it. I.e. Not again. I.e. Bruce Campbell in Army of Darkness. I.e. the reluctant hero that happens to kick ass. I.e. hopelessly stuck protagonist at wit's end. I.e. not predictable bad-ass. I.e. go back to school!

The Doom Guy is a silent protagonist though.

Oh right. So you want the Doom Guy to be Ash from The Evil Dead crossed with wise cracking Duke Nukem, crossed with Marty McFly as he did a bit of time travelling?

This is a reimagining of the original Doom. Same way Doom 3 was. It's not a sequel. The Hell invasion has only taken place, so how can Doom Guy be tired of fighting demons when he didn't even know they existed? This is the first contact, hence why it's called 'Doom' and not Doom 4.

BTW, your first sentence is an oxymoron of sorts.

[Disclaimer] I'm not calling you a moron.

Serious Sam has a kinda satirical take on this part of the genre, and the next entry in the series has the writers from The Talos Principle working on it. It could be pretty good. Serious Sam 3 was a pretty good (co-op) ride. It's really only somewhat Doom-like... but it hits a lot of the right buttons.

I don't understand people being upset with this game. id tried making a moody horror title with Doom 3(one that was actually pretty good) and people didn't like it because it was such a departure from the mile a second gameplay of the original games. Now they're trying to harken back to that original style of game and people are mad because it isn't something else. I don't get it. I guess some just can't be pleased. Personally, I think it looks rad and can't wait to play it. Doom having been a big part of my childhood(odd as that may sound) this is the sequel I've been waiting for.

They are NOT going back to the original style of the game. If you think so, you don't know the doom series. 2 weapons + checkpoints + no backtracking + dull gunplay ( = being able to play the game with the pad because of consoles) is something that goes very far from the old school shooters. And those are only 4 things, but there are more. I am hyped but I also know that of course they had to adjust everything to the public of now. That means, puffy hands from the teenagers on console will grab the game and maybe feel quite satisfied, having no idea of the older dooms. Veterans who had doom on floppy disks will only reminiscence of the old days because this will hardly be any different from all the modern shooters....it's just a normal FPS with demons. But that is understandable, the developers had to try to satisfy young gamers AND the old wolves who played all the dooms at the time. It is not an easy task so most likely it will be a lukewarm soup for both of the gamer groups. Some kind of compromise....for the moment I force myself to have my expectations very low.

hah... was all that sarcasm really necessary?

I don't like it either. It's neat looking but it looks overpowered and it breaks up the action (what action?) too much.

Automation rarely makes an action game better.

The more things the game does FOR the player the dumber it feels imo. Maybe it's just me, but retarded stuff like brutally slamming the rotting face of a killed marine in to a retina scanner just makes me think the Doomguy, by extension me in the game, is a real jerk. Doesn't add anything. Like why is it consdered to be more fun to cutscene-kill an enemy now, than it is to just shoot it dead? To me, i guess it can look cool, but it almost never FEELS cool when you are actually playing. The cool moments i remember are usually when i manage to do something awesome or unexpected within the game rules, not because i get to watch a pre-made animation of a curb stomp.

Oldschool ftw in that sense.

I just hope the shooting is fun between the canned animations, and that they are at least optional.

Duke Nukem was just an obnoxious meathead, Marty McFly was a guy who didn't know any better with something to prove. So, not literally like that, no. Ash... Well actually, Ash would be closer to what I was thinking only because he hated what he's doing yet had to.

Either way, I just thought it would be interesting to have him as more than an eyebrow raising one-dimensional badass, you know. Hell, even making him an escaped mental patient would be a change.

(don't get me wrong, I like the series. Own all the games, etc. Even Rage. I'm a huge id fan. I'm just thinking out loud on this.)

@megido: Oldschool ftw in all senses, megido. In all senses... oh, the that satisfying feeling of ending a boss.

Not a fan of Brutal Doom, then? How about the original MK games when you were a kid with the gory finishing moves and that. You know, stuff that makes games fun? I bet you're good craic at parties.

It's an option. So long as it's an option to rip a demon's head off and punt it down a corridor, then I'm fine with that. One of the things that made the original stand out was how controversial it was with its violence. This is a modern way of doing the same. As you say, it's there to look cool. That's the whole point of it. It's not exactly like it's a QTE within a cut scene that locks you out of the action. If it empowers you and makes you feel like beast playing the game, then it's only a good thing. Plus no doubt there will be a moment where one particular enemy gets the jump on you and takes half your health and you say "Right, fucko! I'm ripping your cock off and shoving it up your arse!" and you go and do it. Well, that would be a good one, but I doubt its in there. It should be. Anyway, I swear to fuck, people complain about these things for the sake of it these days.

I complain about it because it's used as a crutch a lot of the time. Instead of making the actual moment to moment gameplay satisfying and fun, we give the palyer a little visual reward after doing "the work" of playing the game. Shooting the enemy should be it's own reward, because it's fun and requires skill to do well.

All the fancy CG in the world cant mask how shite Bays Transformer movies are, in teh same way, lame "cinematic" bits don't actually make a bland game better. Just flashier.

Well, the thing is, we're asking the developers to perform a VERY difficult balancing act. Your say "shooting the enemy should be it's own reward." Quantify that for me. How does that work? What makes running around in an environment in a game derived from THE shooter more or less "rewarding?" These are hard questions. From the looks of the trailer the shooting and movement will be the core of the game and they look good. But. I GUARANTEE you'd be here complaining if the game turns out to be no more than a clone of its original. So in order to try to mix things up a bit they throw in all those little flourishes. That's all it is. Just spices thrown onto an already good(hopefully) cut of meat.

Novel gameplay mechanics don't need to be automated. These are simply quick time events.

And no one complained about the Wolfenstein reboot.

If i knew how to perfectly balance and design games to be super fun to play, and not rely on cheap gimmicks, i would be running a successful games studio, not sit and complain on GSY :)

Ofc it's tough to do that. that's why great games are great, and mediocre ones are just that. Now ofc i can't say anything about the game as i haven't played it yet. It just seems like a bit of a thing when it comes to big AAA games today, that the moment to moment gameplay takes a backseat to cinematics and set pieces. I think this is utter fucking garbage, and it's not what i think ID have been known to do, which makes it stand out even more in this case. Not saying that ID makes perfect games or anything, but at least they tend to put gameplay first and use cinematics and such in service of that.

Also worth pointing out is that adding cinematic finishers doesn't really change the game up at all. It just wrestles control away from the player for a bit while going "Look at me! Look at me!". Gameplaywise that changes nothing, other than to drag the pacing down.

Grift; good point. The New Order was pretty sweet, and it wasn't overly reliant on dumb gimmicks either. It was just a fairly solid, fun shooter.

I don't know what craic means and I think it's for the best. As for the Brutal Doom - I do not like it, just like any other style over substance trash. And MK games were an exercise in a precise button mashing on a mechanical level, but certainly not a "cinematic" movie cutscene nonsense. I consider them to be an entirely different matter and I don't understand why did you remember them all of a sudden.

You better throw that "third wave feminism" nonsense out of your head, boyo. There's no substitute for being a good player and doing awesome stuff, that the game allows you to do IN GAMEPLAY, on the daily basis, in the world of video games. Perhaps you'll be better off "playing" graphic novels and such?
