i can't imagine it's anyone but adults who want a nostalgia fix causing the demand for this thing. no kid in 2016/17 is going to play this for more than 5 minutes when they have a modern gaming device sat next to them. as good as these games WERE back then, and as well as some of them have aged, they're all bettered by more modern takes on their old formulas.

the only reason i'd buy one was to gut it for it's shell to stick in more robust retro hardware.

i was actually talking more about the indie scene, which has improved upon everything that ever existed back then in a way more polished, refined and complex way.

In a lot of cases, sure. I think the real failing of the NES Mini may be the small library.

Still.. a few of those games hold up pretty well. Super Mario Bros. 3 is still a great platformer for example.

There are a few games in there that are still excellent, like Mega Man 2. I still play through it once every few years.

The NES had limited graphical capabilities to express visual styles and techniques, so in many cases new indie games are superior in that respect, but compared to the 16bit machines i'd argue that no recent game champions the 2d graphics from the best of the mid 90's. The AAA games at that time had a large team of seasoned graphic artists working on a relatively high budget on hardware that didn't limit their possibilities that much.

We all have access to emulators, this would be a nice chance to actually own the games for a reasonable price and play with a decent replica of a NES controller (retrolink can suck it, shitty ass controllers).

Nope.

That's the hook.

It would have been nice if you could pop in a SD card into the cart bay (inside some kind of mock mini NES cart) and you had to push it in and down like the original system. Added design and manufacturing of course, but it would have been a nice little feature for what you're buying.

you can actually buy RPi cases that look like the old systems...miniaturized...hell, they're even smaller and cuter then this (still kinda big given what's inside it) mini console.

there really is no reason to buy this if you genuinely have an interest in playing retro games.

Aye, just seen the video Melmoth posted. That's the sort of thing Nintendo should have done. I never knew those existed, although maybe that's part of the problem Nintendo are addressing, plus it's their console. I dare say those RPi's aren't very legal. Downloading a ROM and wirelessly porting it onto a cart is amazing, though. That's some Star Trek shit if you were to be told that were possible back in the NES days.

I still think this one looks better than any retro-ish casing you can buy for a Pie.

I haven't seen any proper lag tests done on the NES Classic, but i would guess it's in the same ballpark as a Pie running a Libretro core (retropie), which has something like 16-20ms more latency than a proper setup emulator in win10. A video-output modded (real) NES can shave a few more ms of that. The problem is when you have a screen/TV that adds a couple of frames on top of this, and it will start feeling sluggish.
