Xbox 360 PS3

The much awaited demo of Mirror's Edge is now online on both PSN and XBL, and it sure didn't disappoint. Here is a video from the 360 version, since the PS3 one simply wouldn't download last night...

Well I'm clearly in the minority because I didn't particularly enjoy Mirror's Edge despite thinking it looked cool in the trailers and game demos. It is too trial and error for me and while the concept is cool, I didn't enjoy having to be constantly on the move. It's a game that I think looks better and more exciting when I'm watching someone else playing it I think. The gameplay also seems a bit one-dimensional and I was starting to get a little bored by the end of the demo. The first person view also seems a little intrusive at times and I kept wishing for a third person view. I can't help wondering how that translates to a full game personally, there doesn't seem to be enough substance there for a 10+ hour game IMO but maybe there's more variety and stuff we didn't see in the demo?

I wasn't too impressed with the visuals either, they're extremely jaggy and the texturing is poor, not so noticable when you're running but very much so when you stand and look around like during the opening tutorial. It looks very PS2-ish at times. There was even some screen tearing. The character models are also poorly animated but since you're supposed to avoid them it's not a big issue. The opening anime intro was terrible too. It's not often the cinematics look *worse* than the ingame visuals! :O

The general consensus from the various forums I've been on seems to be that this is a good game so it is obviously just not for me. I'm actually disappointed that I didn't "get it" to be honest. I'll try the 360 demo later on though before I dismiss it completely. It was never on my list to buy this year anyway but I was interested in it. Ah well... :(

I've never seen a video game with so much feel of physical awareness. It makes all of the other fps out there obsolete as far as gameplay. Now is the time more than ever to release a virtual reality helmet. Man, just typing those words took me back about 10 years or more. Perhaps the term virtual reality would have to change, but I see the next consoles pushing this type of interactivity even more.

Meh, I cannot wait to play this demo!!!! I haev to wait till tomorrow >.< I hope its as great looking when you play as in all the trailers we've seen. I love the fact that games are FINALLY starting to show some decent enviroment lighting, there is no reason not to have global illumination (ie when you shine a light on a red wall, red light bounces off, etc)in the enviroment at the very least.

And as for the textures mentioned before: there are textures? I mean, a lot of what I've seen in terms of the enviroment was either a solid color, or just a really flat texture. Their supposed to be simple. So not having great textures, even if its true, shouldn't be too much of an issue. But I'll see when I play I guess.

Loved the demo I think the whole game is unique. No offense but a lot of people complains about AA issues.. maybe it's just me, but when I'm playing a game I'm not "counting the pixels" and the jaggies.. Anyway the game is a must have for me , loved every bit of it, gorgeus graphics , the main character's voice is cool and the cinematics was great.

Wish to play this one but the PC demo doesn't come up for yet another 1,5 week. And I hate that you cannot download new demos of Xbox Live anymore without need to wait weeks ><.

At least I can play with the new dashboard ^^ and the install function is super b.

@droezelke - I think I made the big mistake of playing the Mirror's Edge demo after playing Far Cry 2 and the Banjo-Kazooie: N&B demo so it looked very sterile and bland in comparison. I still cannot see what the fuss is over the look of the game myself... it looks very plain and boxy to me and not the slightest bit immersive considering it is first person.

The big deal breaker for me though is that I found the game more frustrating than fun sadly because it relies heavily on trial and error and as such I never once felt involved with the game. It just never "clicked". I'd happily watch someone play it who knows what they're doing though - it looks awesome in the trailers and videos - but I have little desire to actually play it. Sorry!

I just played the demo and all i can say is DAMN. If the entire game is of the same quality as the demo then this is the game i've been waiting for all year. Every thing about the demo is just superb, graphics, sound, voice acting, gameplay...i just loved it all. Seldom do i get so hyped up over a game as i am about mirrors edge right now. Pure awesome.

The two weeks to release are going to be long.

I just compared both versions and have to say PS3 wins easily.

Xbox 360 has less aliaising, but the picture is more blured, colours are not as vivid , the whole picture looks more washed out and the framerate is not as smooth, there are also some drops in the framerate while PS3 has non of them, but PS3 is the lead platform afterall.

I'll have to agree with Doctor_Hades on this one...
This would have been a great third person game, like Assassins Creed.

Then there was the lack of control re-config. (yes i know there is a re-config option but it sucks, as it basicly just swaps two sets of buttons)
Why is it that when a new game comes out, game designers have a desperat need to move basic-move buttons such at jump or shoot.

The demo actually convinced me not to get the full game.
Too bad, it looked so promising.

The controls definitely take some getting used to, but that's hardly a deal breaker imo, just play the demo till you get used to them and you should have no problem with the full game. As for the visuals being bland, I think the cleanliness or sterility of the world very much plays into the story of the game, how the world has become so controlled in all aspects as if a neat freak has taken over.

I still kinda wish there was a third person OPTION, but I still had tons of fun playing it, day one purchase for me.

Call it a hunch but i think they chose this layout so that you could run, jump and slide around while still being able to look around. But hell, what do i know, they probably did it just to piss you off.

Well the demo was a bit slow at first, but it had to be this way. The second part is really fun.

In general the game is great!

Tried the demo today and I liked it a lot. The visual style in the game is refreshing and distinct. But what I really liked was the gameplay. You really feel like you're in control. The 'parkouring' is not as scripted as Assassin's Creed, so you really feel like you're doing all the fancy moves. My only gripe is the hand-to-hand combat. Its really stiff and it never really feels like your landing punches. DICE should have scripted some better looking takedowns as well, instead of these awkward ragdolls flopping around. There is no excuse for this considering what Starbreeze managed with Riddick and melee combat in FPS.

Good demo. I'm sure the final product will receive high marks. But man, it's nice to play a game in 2008 that doesn't involve super soldiers shooting at aliens or angsty half-naked teenagers saving the world.

Are we allowed to post links here? I've made a video explaining how to free roam using a glitch on the tutorial. It's pretty cool, there are several shortcuts you can take that aren't allowed when Celeste is dragging you by the hand. You can even go right back to the start.

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGoculWD9_A

graphics are top notch (amazing light!!!), art style gorgeous, great music and sound editing...top top top!

now, if only this manages to have a cool story, and not get repetitive, i have my game of the year!

great graphics, excellent blur effects. And as always, excellent sound effects from Dice.

I initially found the control set up alittle strange..but once you get used to it it all seems to fit and flow nicely.

As for the gameplay itself...well, its a great racing/platform game...i'm just still not sold on the combat yet. And though you can pull off some nice flashy moves to disarm enemys the AI on a whole seems pretty weak. Aiming also feels abit awkward..which is strange considering Dice's last game was battlefield.

I was playing the 360 demo and it looked great..no jaggies, no pop in, no slowdown, and no screen tearing (something i was expecting to see alot of)
