Xbox 360 PS3

Electronic Arts released this long presentation video of Need For Speed: Undercover's HDE. What's HDE, it's basically the way the cars handling has been realistically (or not) modeled in the game. And it's pretty strange.

So why did ea even bother releasing that video, the presenter talks about these "features" as they where something new, but it's just basic driving physics like we have seen in any semi realistic driving game for the last 10 years.
But ea has allways been a fan of using silly buzzwords for "features" in their games.

Nice to see some gameplay footage i guess, shame about the graphics they are pretty but very sterile looking.

Blim - what's so stange about this doc?

I liked what I saw. And yes, there actually were some new stuff in there. I quite liked what I saw. Nice looking graphics and the game seems to play really smooth now. First NFS game in a LOOONG time that I have actually had any interest in...

hmmmm,i like it,looking great, better than that waste of space they call midnight club that has you driving and buildings poping up and road dissapearing on you ,this looks solid, yet again EA is releasing some great solid games, deadspace, now this.

i think they should start to get praised instead of all the EA hates moaning about them.
cheers for the video blim :)

It's a six minute video that spends 95% of the time demonstrating very basic driving game concepts like it was something new and revolutionary.

I personally think this game has got some serious competition this year from the astoundingly brilliant Midnight Club: L.A. which does the whole open world racing game thing so much better than Need for Speed ever has or Burnout Paradise for the matter. It certainly did it first on the consoles anyway. Los Angeles is detailed, populated, heavy with traffic... it feels "alive", something those other games don't. The handling and framerate are also much better than the Need for Speeds of old and ironically it has the sense of speed NFS tends to lack; there's no stodginess in the handling nor any nasty framerate drops for example. So what if the game suffers from the occasional slow loading textures, in every other way it is technically superior to the NFS series and the gameplay knocks it for six. The varied "trash" talk during the game is the icing on the cake... it's gives the game personality and in over 25 hours of playing I still hear new comments.

Last year's ProStreet was a turgid, dull affair anyway but while Undercover looks much, much better, it doesn't look that different from MC:LA and the atmosphere doesn't seem to be there. I'm intending giving this a miss this year as I'm enjoying MC:LA far too much and don't see the need to own two very similar games. Of course, should the reviews declare it a must-have classic then I may reconsider and pick it up on the cheap after Christmas. I have to say that Undercover does look a little bland graphically though from those screenshots; the cars look nice but the textures look almost non-existent! :?

Midnight Club L.A. is a great game but it's difficulty is putting a lot of people off... NFS:U will probably be more approachable to the masses. Either way, I own MC:L.A and I'm getting this... it's a good year for me.

he sounds so happy to be doing what every other car game has done for years. The graphics didn't look that good, i'm sticking with midnight club.

Seems to me he was comparing it to existing NFS games and not other racing games. All of this stuff is indeed new in the NFS universe.

The emphasis on seeing the front of the car when you reverse isn't about looking pretty or being unique, it's because the gameplay is based around escaping from other vehicles he's trying to nail in the fact that features like this all add to the ease of controlling your car and seeing where you're going in tough situations. It's not new, but it's what you want in a getaway.

handling looks a lot looser and more responsive like midnight club (unlike recent past NFS titles where if feels like your streering a tank) but overall it looks like more of the same. generic, boring street racing. for a genre that has a lot of high quality titles like burnout paradise and now MC:LA this just doesnt do enough to stand out imo

Eh no. It's six minute video that spends 95% of the time demonstrating new features in this year's NFS. I for one welcome these new car manoeuvres.
Yeah being able to do burnouts, doughnuts, reverse driving and handbrake turns sure are new to the series.......

Oh wait it's all done by a "flick of the switch"....wow amazing stuff.

You can do all the things shown in this video in ANY modern driving game with a good physics engine, and most of them do it with a lot more realism than this.

But don't let all my bitching fool you i am in fact looking forward to this game as i am a huge fan of the old nfs games, i was just annoyed that ea chose to make such a gimmicky video focusing on what is standard to all driving games, instead of actually showing new features and innovations.

I feel a bit sorry for the guy in the video, it's like ea's marketing team forced him to hype the blatantly obvious. ;)

Exactly my thoughts, though...I prefer the handling of the (older) NFS games over MNC. But yeah, they really created a living and breathing city in MNCLA, this game however...bland and dull spring to mind.

Reverse driving is now a feature...
So is being able to see your car from the side..
And so is that front wheel drive cars feel different from all wheel drive cars..

Omg. They have hit a new low LOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLL
Seriously NFS went from the best in the business to the biggest joke in the business.
Dont fucking treat customers like 7 year old idiots. Give us proper physics and racing that takes SKIIIIIIILL. Can still be arcade, arcade racers are great, but not when they treat me like a damn kid. A 360 burnout when im driving at 200kph? Gimme a break, its not fun, its not cool, its just a joke.

I actually installed NFS Hot Pursuit, and Hot Pursuit 2 (i think thats what it was called, the first one that had night time racing and damage?), and had a GREAT time. So i'm not just talking with imaginary memories, the old games were great arcade racers.

Agreed. Just because it's an arcade racer, doesn't mean it has to be this fake.

Sounds like those bashing MC:LA either haven't played it, are NFS fanboys, or just don't get on with driving games. Are gamers turning into pussies these days? Sure, MC:LA is tough to start with - it should be, your car is crap. Struggle through, tweak it, get some boost, learn the city, learn the races, practice, and you will start winning when you deserve to win. People expect to be able to get first place every single time they race these days…I'm glad that MC:LA is in a high difficulty level.

This NFS game looks OK - similar to games of old, a bit sterile, bland environments, but the cops making a big return is good. Time will tell if it is better than MC:LA, but if it is, it will have to be stunning, because when you distill MC:LA down to its basics, it represents the pinnacle of street racing games. Just because you have read that it's tough, or you didn’t like previous MC games, it doesn't make it a bad game.

Honestly, the way some gamers behave these days - no wonder gaming is seen as a nerdy activity with idiots like some on here.
