Why not ?
Most 2D Games offer much better, and tighter Gameplay in my Opinion !
And Mario is stuffed with Cool ideas ! Actually there is no difference in why a 2D game should not cost full price ! Game is Game, makes no difference if 3D or 2D !
What matters is how good the game is i think !

Just not sure where your thinking comes from that a 2D game is less worth then a 3D game ! Curious, would you tell me ?

Yeah, I don't get it either. Sure, there is nothing wrong with 2d, but here the visuals and art design are barely any better than what we seen on the Wii. In fact, a game like Rayman looks much more interesting than this visually. If you're going to make a step up in hardware, then make it look as if it has. Galaxy had a mix of 3d and 2d scroller, so side scroller alone just isn't cutting it. I always wondered what a proper Mario game on PS3/360 and above level hardware would look like, and this ain't what I pictured. Sort it out, Nintendo. You're starting to become a bunch of lazy bastards now with your very own and still famous IP's. Don't do a "Rare".

Because the 2d scroller is dated. Literally. The 2d scroller was just a product of limited tech in the 8-bit to 16-bit era. We don't need to be restricted to that viewpoint any more since consoles and PC's were capable of pushing enough polys to make it 3d. Why should the platformer be consigned to nothing but a throwback to that era these days? The best platformers I ever played were all in 3d. Mario 64, Banjo et al, even game like Soul Reaver. That's the problem these days. Devs have literally stalled or gone backwards in genre, and the poor old platformer has been relegated to nostalgic-styled 2d scrollers on the marketplace or PSN.

These kind of games are just perfect for old-school gamer such as me. Of course I would prefer pixel over 2.5D graphics but what ever. A good 2d platformer always wins an average 3d game by far. I would say those buggy/glitchy 3D games should cost less. :)

This looks incredibly uninspired and bland, is Big N running out of ideas... ? Don't like the price tag ? Well, you could buy Gianna Sisters Twisted Dreams for 20 bucks right now instead. It's been out for PC for nearly 2 weeks now and features awesome music from legendary game composer Chris Hülsbeck and SID-Metal interpretations from Machinae Supremacy, with console versions pending and probably following early 2013.

Let me stop you while you're ahead. If you're a true gamer, you'd know that the difference between developing a 2D game and 3D game is like comparing a car to a jet. There is so much work that goes into making a 3D game that non techies could never comprehend. I shouldn't even have to mention. Try looking into Maya 3D and you'll think you were looking at government blueprints. Couple that with programming and things get trickier. 2D games can be found on mobile devices in numbers higher than the 8-bit and 16-bit era. Why? Because they are easier to develop. Nintendo selling this game at full price as a launch title is just plain ridiculous. 2D games are sold as DLC at much reduced prices. There's no justification to claim that development cost of a 2D game is comparable to a 3D game. It's not even an argument.

This looks to be a side-scrolling platformer with 3D assets, so it's kind of in the middle; you'd only need to factor in a fixed Z-plane and even rudimentary hit-box behaviour, so in that respect there's a lot less complexity. But, there's still a lot of work that goes into designing, animating and lighting all those polys, let alone the gameplay (which has to be tighter than a duck's butt for this type of game). But yeah, I agree with your general 2D vs 3D comment.

It's perfectly normal for videogame graphics to evolve with a new console generation thrown into the market, hell, i even expect Nintendo for them to evolve if they want me to buy their new system. As long as they dont change key gameplay aspects of course ! See how Rayman (Legends) evolved while staying true to it's roots ? See how Bionic Commando (Rearmed) evolved over the 8-bit one and how the 3D version pretty much failed ? BC 3D was a silly no-go: You just dont mess with an already established and beloved brand in terms of controls or gameplay if it's not truly for the sake on further improving existing stuff (grappling hook mechanics) ! But that doesnt mean you're not allowed to improve on design ! Honestly, i think Wario Land on the Wii is looking lightyears ahead of this. Muramasa is also another great Wii game which is exemplary for how to improve on classic 2D or 2,5D design, visuals and effects. Maybe the new Mario Bros U will look better in motion, but somehow i doubt it. On stills it kinda looks like a shoddy port of the DS version...

While I'm not speaking directly about this game, I definitely think 2D games can be amazing and easily worth as much as 3D games. 3D isn't inherently better.

Nah, that's still all bullshit. Consumers are not paying for that fact some guys know Maya or Zbrush those are simply tools and the tools don't dictate gameplay styles. Budgets and teams have gone up but consumer prices stay the same because its how much gameplay value is in a title not how it presents itself. Downloadable platformers are all really short compared to Mario titles so it's weak argument to try and compare the two. A downloadable platformer with a large number of satisfying gameplay hours is still well worth the money. Unless of course it's not a gameplay style you appreciate.

Thinking that 3D has some greater intrinsic value than 2D, its like saying CG is better than old school cel animation, purely subjective and opinion based (and just fucking horseshit). I know I don't automatically respect the fact someone knows a fucking 3D graphics tool if it means they can't pick up a pencil and draw a decent picture on an actual piece of paper. Apparently though its the reason I should pay more for my games.

Fucking laughable.

Just what I have found from my experience as well.
Working for years now on different games, and guess a bit old school my self,
but the new kids i meet who are entering our comp[any are really good with all those tools,
but as you said..give them a pencil and a piece of paper..and they don't know even how to paint ! :( They know there Models and there renderings..and most of it just feels cold and unpersonal !

The art of making a good 2D game is slowly lost, try to find some good Pixel artist and you will know what I mean ! Most schools just teach digital painting on PS,Maja and other 3D tools !

I feel I am glad that the indie scene is doing so much in 2D,and they show..2D is still well a good way to express ideas, and its a choice !

In the end,it all comes down to taste i guess and what we prefer,
but making a cool 2D game is not as easy as some might think,
and cost for the team and all the licenses and computers, offices are the same as for a 3D game. Development time might be at times different,
but i can't say that as well. I just finished working on a game that took us 2 years to make, and selling it low because its a 2D game is something very strange to me..who can survive on it ?

So as Munkini said,it depends on what you offer people, content and soul, gameplay and fun ,something worth their money !
Just because its 2D to make it less worth is wrong, cause its not true !

Anyway, thanks guys for sharing your thoughts on this matter, helps brighten the horizon :)

Cheers
