The new screenshots of Thief depict the mission Lockdown that happens early in the game. A ruthless lockdown (hence the mission's title) has been enforced by Baron Northcrest to put down stirs regarding the mysterious Gloom sickness.

I'm pretty disappointed so far, but it looks like this will be the case for the first year.
I have a feeling that by the time the first Halo comes out for X1, developers will have a hold on the toolsets for development, and be able to push BOTH systems much, much further while still being able to meet the standard of 1080p/60fps.

The point: You're saying it couldn't be done on current gen consoles, but it's not actually going to look like this on next-gen consoles either. It absolutely could be done on current gen w/ some (relatively) minor downgrades.
It's not technically a bullshot (like say, DR3 "screens" that Capcom releases) since there is a PC version, but it's still not going to look like that on Xbox or PS4. It'll be significantly closer, I suppose, but it will still be quite a ways away from what you see here. I'd be shocked if I were wrong on this one. That's not some cheap FXAA at work, that's some super sampling and/or high levels of MSAA right there...
And it won't even be down to edge quality. They won't use the highest quality assets either.
Battlefield is a good example of a game that you can't really do properly on current gen. They couldn't even do BF3 properly. Those are extremely downsized versions of the games (including map sizes, player counts, etc). Stuff that goes right down to the core of the gameplay. I bet Thief 4 will be more or less the same game on every platform.
