GSY Review PC PS4 Xbox One

As we were sent our review copy of Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom a bit late, we haven't been able to play more than 6 hours and 30 minutes. We have no final verdict for you guys but we still want to share our thoughts on our experience so far. To illustrate our short paragraph, we also have a bunch of new videos.

Verdict

Shiness is clearly not all bad, but it suffers from a good deal of problems that take away some of the fun. For starters, we don't think the combat system truly works as it should, which can make it pretty annoying against certain bosses, or when you have to chain several series of enemies in a row. Then, there is the way the game design is built, with one sequence that will have you activate numerous switches (or rather crystals) in order to reach another area where you'll need to find 2 keys to open a door, and so on, and so on. Finally, there are the occasional bugs, like the one you can see in the last part of the last video, which prevented us from moving our character, making or taking damage, or even switching back to another teammate. It's always a bit infuriating to be forced to reload the last save because of such an issue, so we hope it will be fixed soon enough. To be fair though, it only happened to us the one time. Aside from all the things which made us wonder if the game had a personal grudge against us, there is a pretty nice world to discover, with new areas we'd love to explore. We just don't know if the rest of the game will really be worth the trouble we might have playing. For now, we advise you to check what the reviews and players say before you make up your mind. The game is sold at a pretty cheap price and you can tell the developers have been very committed in their project, but we really don't know if they haven't set their sights a bit too high.
  • On the plus side
  • A colorful and original game world
  • Some pretty nice-looking landscapes
  • Good soundtrack
  • The combat system seems pretty deep at first
  • The nostalgic vibe the game gives
  • The game opens up after 6 hours
  • The game's longevity is likely to be solid
  • The imaginary language invented for the game
  • Also playable with English voices
  • Cheap price
  • On the downside
  • Technically dated
  • The gap between the comic book character design and the 3D models
  • The camera during combat
  • The feeling of latency during combat
  • Combat gets more annoying than fun
  • A few potentially annoying bugs
  • Traversal can feel awkward
