GSY Video PS5 Xbox Series X PC PS4 Xbox One Switch

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is now available on pretty much all systems and we have recorded the beginning of all three games on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X. The main disappointment comes from the fact that the console versions feature two graphics modes, as in "the collection can't run at 60 in Fidelity mode because it's so demanding", and choosing performance does not even guarantee a smooth framerate when driving around. Needless to say that we didn't see that coming with games that are after all PS2 titles originally. The graphical update is nice, although not everyone will like the new character models, but there was some definite work out into the makeover. Now if you want to enjoy a 4K image with 60 fps and maxed out effects, it will only be on PC. Check out our videos and let us know what you think.

Just a heads-up for everyone, best to wait for a while until Rockstar fixes a lot of the issues with these versions. Many complaints of people with very high-end PCs having performance issues, sttutering, freezing, crashing, etc.

Some with RTX 3080 saying they can't maintain 60fps... that's really messed up. Below is the link to a video of someone playing it with RTX 3080 Ti at native 4K ultra settings going down to 43fps!

GTA Definitive Edition is Unoptimized Garbage on PC | 3080 Ti Benchmark:

Anyway, best to wait for many fixes.

As with any PC game, your mileage will vary. Some people will have no issues, while others will have a lot of issues. But even on consoles like the PS5, people are getting very bad performance. Like in thhe article below, they have videos with both frame rate and frame time:

"It seems the frame rate in both modes on PS5 is not locked and wanders all over the shop. Grand Theft Auto 3 in Performance mode can drop as low as 35fps, even with the day one patch installed."

TheSixthAxis - Report: The frame rate for the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy titles is not great on PS5:

35 fps!!!!! On a PS5 for essentially a PS2 game from 2001. Rockstar will most likely fix and improve these games, but they're not great atm. And not just performance wise, but gameplay wise like bugs and general unpolishness.

Update:

EuroGamer - Rockstar pulls Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition from sale on PC - As the Rockstar Games Launcher remains offline.

"Rockstar has pulled Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition from sale on PC.

This week the PC version launched exclusively on the Rockstar Games Launcher, which then suffered significant issues that made the game unplayable."

I thought these looked decent from the trailer, but the gameplay they can look pretty bad! They really ruin a lot of the mood of the originals.

Just finished reading through 3 articles on Eurogamer about how much of a fucked up disaster these versions have been.

And not only the games themselves, but their launch, the service, unlicensed music inside the game's files, developers' notes and documentation inside the files - Switch version has even more of these than the other ones, and it just doesn't stop.

Now the games are unavailable for purchase and the people who bought them on PC can't play them because Rockstar disabled that launch version in order to make a new version without the unlincensed music and developers' files.

Like many people are saying, this is even worse than Cyberpunk 2077, which was a new game which got crushed by a crazy sky-high level of ambition and was rushed out the door by management after several delays.

This trilogy wasn't even announced until a few weeks back, there was no need to rush it out the door in this state - while they all knew how bad these versions were even before announcing them.

But more importantly, these are games from 15-20 yeas ago, which now have so many bugs and performance issues that weren't present in their original versions, be it on PS2 or PC.

Worst of all, Rockstar and Take-Two's lawyers went super hostile and aggressively pursued most modders who were a big part for the success of these games and did months and years of work for free, yet the "professional" developers getting paid did this:

https://i.redd.it/l8zbwpxwa6z71.png

That image is both embarassing and depressing. Even the original model was miles better, the modded version was was miles better than that, and what the Memeable Edition does is just disgraceful.

This level of incompetence is far worse than in Cyberpunk 2077's case. All from a company far richer and with much more employees than CD Projekt RED afaik. Which all of this just makes this whole disaster... I don't even have the words.

Made me go from being very excited to play these games that I loved back then and think very fondly to a hard pass until - maybe - if the modding community fixes them almost completely. Which is somewhat unlikely given how the modding community got treated by Rockstar and Take-Two. Guess who laughs last, laughs best. Or who cries last, cries the hardest.
