We might already be in Cologne for the Microsoft conference, but we couldn’t fail to miss out on the embargo for Risen 3: Titan Lords. Stealthily released on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 we have four videos straight from the PC version ready to go along with our first impressions from Piranha Bytes latest.
Impressions
Contrary to what was foreshadowed in the reveal footage, Risen 3 hasn’t left behind the world of piracy. We were happy to find the friendly atmosphere and kitschy bits of the previous game in tact along with some of its flora and fauna. The environments are still ripe for exploration with lovely visuals in tow despite a bit of pop-up trying its best to spoil things. As with the second game, dangerous encounters are legion and the new hero’s resistance is still rather fragile the beginning of the adventure. It is certainly more welcoming than the first few hours of Risen 2 where the smallest boar could decimate the player with ease, yet the combat system feels just as awkward out of the gate. By unlocking certain skills (both magic and not) and gaining glory (which allows to gain experience), the confrontations are valuable for leveling up, but beware, Risen 3 is not an action game and approaching it as such will lead down a familiar path of death and despair. It’s tough to say more at this point but by combining the best points of the two previous games, the developer should still manage to meet their fans expectations. Still, there’s always a sense that this series lacks the polish and attention to detail it really needs to shine and Risen 3 seems destined to follow its prequels in that regard.
