Operation Flashpoint: Red River has just been released so as usual, you get to see a bit of the game with our homemade videos. In the first two, you will see the very first steps of the campaign I played on my own, while the last video will show you some co-op gameplay with Augur (aka Tkazu) and AbSoLuT_b, from the French side.
When you first play Operation Flashpoint: Red River, the first contact is not that positive. Visually speaking, one can't say Dirt's graphics engine really shines here, on the contrary. There are indeed some aliasing issues, simplistic textures, over-pixelated shadows, and the environments could use a bit more polygons. Thankfully, the size of the maps along with the freedom they offer helps compensate for the overall disappointing look of the game. Also, it is important to mention that the lighting effects are very well-done and that they give Red River a more realistic touch. Sound-wise, nothing too impressive either, be it in the weapon sounds or the music you hear when being driven to the next assignment point.
Also hard is getting used to the fact that you are not playing a standard first person shooter where you can shoot the enemies from up close and smell their bad breath. Here, you will most of the time aim at a tiny dot in the distance, hoping that he won't hit you first. You certainly won't feel like the invincible soldier you incarnate in the Call of Duty series. Some will love it, some will just pass. Unfortunately, even for fans, it is difficult not to get pissed at the AI, despite some nice tactical possibilities. It may get better as you progress into the game, but in the beginning, your teammates do not seem that bright. The solution then is to play the game with up to three friends. Indeed, unless you do not choose your friends wisely, you won't have to yell at them for not following your orders to the letter. It is undeniable that the game becomes more fun that way.
Depending on what you are looking for, Operation Flashpoint: Red River will either be your cup of tea or the most effective repellent ever. Hopefully, our videos will hep you make up your mind.
