As the second title in the Nacon catalog to be featured on our cover this week, Styx: Blades of Greed marks the grand return of the famous character from French developer Cyanide Studio. To celebrate this, we invite you to read our verdict and take a look at our gameplay video of the PlayStation 5 Pro version.
Verdict
Even though we enjoyed the first two installments, we must admit that we weren't especially impatient to play this third episode. As they say, out of sight, out of mind, and in this case, the saying couldn't be more true. Because ultimately, diving back into this universe, and especially into this infiltration-focused gameplay, reminded us why we had such a great time playing Master of Shadows and Shards of Darkness. Blades of Greed features excellent level design that encourages players to seek out alternative paths or adapt their approach to situations. While the narrative structure inevitably leads to some repetition in terms of objectives, the decision to make the levels large enough to justify returning to discover new areas was a clever one. At the proposed price (only €39.99 on PC and €49.99 on console), there is no doubt that this new Styx adventure will find its audience, and if you enjoy old-school stealth games with maximum freedom in your approach, we can recommend it if you can go passed the occasional jankiness and performance hiccups on PC.
- On the upside
- Dense, well-detailed environments
- Well-thought level design
- Numerous possibilities
- Enemies that force you to adapt
- Looks very nice on PC
- and ok on PS5 with a competent 60 fps
- Quick save feature
- Good lifespan
- The price is right
- On the downside
- Lack of variety in terms of objectives
- Combat falls short
- Only three main biomes
- Poor voice acting (apart from Styx)
- Degraded image quality on consoles
- Needs more optimization on PC
