Since we still have a lot of catching-up to do, here is a gameplay video of the newly released God of War Sons of Sparta, which gives young Kratos the opportunity to experience the joys of the Metroidvania genre. The beginning of the adventure, while not incredible, is quite enjoyable, both visually and in terms of the overall combat feedback (thanks to the DualSense), but as press reviews have mentioned technical issues (a first for a Sony Computer Entertainment game, and some would say, sort of a letdown for a 2D title), unexciting level design, and ultimately very routine combat, it doesn't seem to deliver on its promises in the long run. It's a shame, because despite a visual approach that not everyone will appreciate, the idea was really nice. What remains is a title that, in our opinion, is not unpleasant at all to play, but will struggle to convince in a genre where games such as MIO: Memories in Orbit, Hollow Knight Silksong, and many others have set the bar very high.
