KONAMI dates ‘most ambitious and advanced football game ever’

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced it will unleash its eagerly-awaited PES 2012 title on October 14th for PlayStation®3, Xbox 360® and Windows PC, stating it is the most ambitious and advanced football experience ever.

PES 2012 goes further in giving the user total control than any other football title, offering AI innovations and gameplay additions that cover every aspect of real football. Central to PES 2012 is the all-new Active AI system which ensures that teammates work to close down space, defend zonally and hold their line to minimise attacking options. As such, as players defend, their colleagues will look to hold the defensive line and mark oncoming offensive support. Conversely, when attacking, the player will see that their teammates will make dummy runs, draw defenders, and work to give the player more options in attack.

Furthermore, the emphasis on the team as a unit is demonstrated with PES 2012’s ground-breaking Teammate Control system – a truly unique addition which allows the user to control two players at once, prompting runs or drawing defenders with one, while the other holds the ball up. Teammate Control works in two ways; with users pressing the right analogue stick in the direction of the player they wish to control. Support play is offered in Assisted mode wherein users prompt a second player to make a timed run to cut inside or receive a ball, while total control is afforded by the fully Manual mode which gives the user complete freedom of movement of the second player.

Elsewhere, PES 2012 is equally full of new additions. Animation has been enhanced, while the overall presentation has also been refined. Managers can now be seen wandering the touchline, while the general atmosphere of a big-match day has been faithfully recreated. In terms of gameplay, shooting movement and reactions are much improved, control is no longer totally lost when losing possession of the ball, a return to the classic ‘behind player’ penalty system, and one-on-one situations offer greater control as defenders press and jostle to win the ball, and attackers use upper body feints and movements to bypass and wrong-foot their man.

PES 2012 also continues KONAMI’s close relationship with UEFA that sees the PES series as the exclusive home of the UEFA Champions League™, UEFA Europa League™ and UEFA Super Cup™ video game licences. Attention to detail within these key tournaments has been extended to the match officials, and PES 2012 will see referees and their assistants now sporting the official UEFA Champions League™ uniforms.

“PES 2012 is a massive advance for the football genre, truly the most ambitious and advanced football game ever” claimed Jon Murphy, European PES Team Leader for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “The additions we have made in terms of Teammate Control, Active AI and Off the Ball Control and elevate the level of play to new heights. No other game allows users so much control over their team, and PES 2012 ensures that the days of gaps in defence and shouting at teammates to make a run are long gone. This is a very exciting time to be a PES fan, and we are delighted that we can set a firm date for football fans to mark in their calendars.”

KONAMI will detail the release dates for Wii, PlayStation®2 and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) versions of PES 2012 shortly.

PES 2012 will be released for PlayStation®3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC on October 14th. Dates for other formats will be announced shortly.

I agree it's very dated ;)

Err Sept 29th are you sure? That's the day after Fifa12 in NA and the day before Fifa 12 in the EU, games are only released on Friday's in the UK I believe?

Damned... Sept 29th... It's the release date in France, not Europe. Thanks! I have added the press release.

I'll play the demo just to see how it plays out, but once again I'm not in the least bit optimistic.

"You can see here a player skipping past a challenge."

WooOWWWWWWWWWW! That blew me away. I've never seen that before in a football game.

Honestly, Fifa and that new impact engine is just making this look more and more silly. EA have a Euphoria style engine where impacts are dynamic and animations generated on the fly, yet for some reason Konami find it valid to mention a daft single animation that's in PES? Embarressingly dated.

I don't care about a rather pointless injury physics system. It doesn't seem to have a real impact on the actual gameplay - as well as the graphics, of course.

Also, many of these videos are not meant to show completely new mechanics. This one, for example, only shows us how the gameplay was tweaked compared to the predecessor. PES 2011 was a little slow in terms of one-on-one situations.

Pointless injury physics system? What could be pointless about that at all? You get injured at the place you got tackled at, or fell on or anything just like in real life. How on earth is that pointless? Funny these fanboys.

Konami needs to stop making PES, It's fallen too far behind Fifa to ever catch it back up.

It's a laugh, isn't it? Pointless, they say. If PES had it, they'd be creaming in their kecks. In fact, if PES were the only game to have it, I'd be creaming in my kecks too. As it stands, it doesn't have it, therefor it's obviously pointless and a gimmick.

Well done. 7 years later. Better late than never, eh? But something tells me never. Wonder why.

I think the main problem, and it's an incredibly worrying one, is that Konami doesn't even seem to realise what the problem with PES is nowadays. They talk about adding new features, such as manual AI and a few more animations, as if that's what the series has been missing for the past few years. The issues with the game lay in its very foundations; they're using an incredibly outdated engine, which worked wonders in the PS2 days but simply won't cut it for the current generation of consoles.

Until they actually acknowledge this and build an entirely new engine from the ground up, we'll be talking about how PES tails heavily behind its rival for years to come. EA took the gamble and it paid off heavily for them - it's time for Konami to do the same.

Otherwise it's always going to be the case of new year, same story.

You know what?
An entirely new engine would be waaaay to late for this gen.

I guess they know how hard they failed this gen and just hope that sony and MS soon start to deliver dev-packs for the next gen of cobsoles, so that Konami can build an engine that will last for the entire next gen...

It is, but that's entirely their fault. Building a new engine from the ground up is something they should have done 3/4 years ago.

EA had the sense to develop their engine before the Xbxo 360 was even released; Konami just seemed to think that, due to the (deserved) critical success PES enjoyed on the PS2, they could just keep the same engine and no one would know any better.

If I were a PES fan (with some sense) I'd be seriously worried. PES fantatics seem to lap up any sort of small improvement over what essentially turned into a bad product over time. They've been slowly patching the game up, while not driving it forward, or indeed even reaching the standard of something like PES 6, which in itself was a massive let down when it graced the 360 for the first time, but compared to recent efforts, it's a masterpiece. Anyway, the reason why you should be worried if you are a PES fan is what happens when the next generation comes out and Konami are still trying to find the PS2 formula? What if Konami are so deluded that they think again that recapturing the PS2 gameplay will simply just be enough? No new engine for space age tech compared to PS2 tech? Could you even imagine how the current animation system will look on technology that is set to come out 2 years from now, not to mention today? Embarrassing. Konami better be working on a super new engine behind closed doors or something, because if they think they can release something like this (albeit with better visuals) on the next gen, then they'll be a laughing stock, and so too will anyone who buys it. For me, this series died long, long ago.
