PC Xbox 360 PS3

Monolith just sent us these two news videos of Project Origin, the first one showing the powered armor in action and commented by the game's designer, and the second one some quite detailed environments. Nice to see it's not just a F.E.A.R. with new levels!

Nice to see what is almost certainly 360 gameplay (first video, judging by the controls and the right thumbstick). Framerate looks a bit bad, but they still have plenty of time. Also the additional environments look great, and the mech battle itself looks pretty good. Looking forward to it more now.

Wow, some mildly interesting environments in a F.E.A.R game...can't believe I'm actually witnessing this.

Game has some cool action going for it though, just don't like the slow-mo. I know it's part of this game, but I can't stand it. It's just way too overused in this game and the main issue I have with it is that in most situations...you're going to need it. It's barely optional.

You could probably get by without using bullet time in FEAR, but it would have made the game much more difficult. Then again, using it makes the game pretty damn easy :)

There's actually a story connection to the slow-mo too though...

I'm sure you could get through the game without using it, but you would have to take it easy and probably die a lot. Which then takes away the pacing and that immediately puts me off.

I like to just play through the campaign without too much hassle/annoyances. A la Half-Life. It's the lack of pacing that ruined the COD4 SP campaign for me. All too often you'd be hanging around killing enemies, just to have more and more and more (!) spawn on you. Absolutely horrible pacing (expecially when considering how awesome the MP pacing is).

Those player controlled mechanoid vehicles have absolutely no place whatsoever in the FEAR universe. There are plenty of third rate xbox/PS3 sci-fi shooters that accommodate that kind of nonsense but not here if you please Monolith.

Sadly it seems the game is being designed with the average console gamer in mind and not the original PC fanbase :(

Actually the graphics are not the most important part for me..Animation is the most important part in a game for me.. It makes a game reality imo

..and why not? There were mechanized soldiers in the first FEAR, remember?

enemy mech soldiers were there. but shooting sequences for players from inside the mechs were never seen in this series. i agree with md99. i don't think shooting with mech would be welcomed in FEAR by any fans no matter which PC or console they own. at least i don't like it in FEAR. it's not spooky or scary at all and doesn't suit the atmosphere that FEAR has. hope they'd make those sequences very short.
environments are really upgraded. but i wonder series' signature particle effect with slo-mo does maintain its strength as the same before?

I said player controled Mechanoids. Very crude and utterly reeks of a lack of imagination.

See above for one example. Maybe I'm wrong, its just the impression I'm getting. Aren't most PC ports 'simplified' for console owners? With this being developed in tandem with the 360 & PS3 Monolith will no doubt have to pander to them with 'kick ass explosions' and lots of 'fuck yeah!' whooping and hollering amongst NPC's.

I'm amazed that the sequel to the legendary FEAR isn't even on my FPS radar this year, what with the deluge of high-caliber FPSs that are coming out in the time frame. For me, this game is actually below Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, and Far Cry 2. All of those are higher priority for me right now. Just goes to show you what a packed year this is.

Crude or unimaginative? Not to me. Why don't you cut Monolith a little slack, instead of just making another whiny, knee-jerk reaction based on your bias against so-called kiddy console games. For one thing, the mechs were in the first FEAR as well (despite the fact that you couldn't control them, they are still present and stylistically/conceptually consistent with this new game). Secondly, they're harkening back a little bit to a previous Monolith game, Shogo, by putting the player in a first-person mech again.

I'll bet anything that Project Origin will at least be just as mechanically complex as the original FEAR, and won't "dumb down" anything from the original's gameplay. Do all these new previews and trailer footage indicate to you anything at all about the possibility of a "dumbing-down" of the mechanics of FEAR? I don't think so.

I'm a big fan of the original, and PC gaming in general, and I'm inclined to disagree. I don't see that happening here. Hell, Condemned was developed on the 360 first and the PC version is still excellent. The only thing that suffered, and only ever so slightly, was the interface design. I don't think that the appearance of mechs implies anything of the sort at least. Remember, FEAR is as much about action as it is horror.

Yes, many console conversions of PC games have simplified interfaces and control schemes.. but I don't see how the inclusion of a mech somehow implies that it's "dumbed down" for the console audience. Hell, Call of Duty has inherited more from its console conversions than Project Origin will, and it's still the best new FPS on the platform (PC). It amazes me that people are still hung up on the environments--there are several FPS that didn't catch this much hell for their settings that took place in one single environment--give FEAR a damn break!

I expect this game to continue in the tradition of the first FEAR.. and only hope that they've enhanced the narrative quite a bit. The story in FEAR was excellent, but they made next to no attempt to actually tell that story to the player.

I'm hoping that your supernatural abilities are enhanced further than bullet time in this game, considering the revelations about your characters origin from the first. But either way, I expect this to be one of the premier action shooters on the PC this year, and I really am not bothered one bit by the premise of console co-development.

We like kick ass explosions on the PC too.. and who knows, maybe the inclusion of mechs will inspire Shogo 2. I can dream, right?

It is going to be a busy year.. but I'm still pretty thrilled that this is coming. While I'd like to play Killzone 2 and Resistance 2, they both suffer from being console exclusives.. and Far Cry 2 suffers from being an Ubisoft FPS ;)

Fallout 3 is easily one of my most anticipated games this year.. but action FPS it is not.

Well I agree that super powered mechs you PILOT don't 'fit' with the 'scary' FEAR theme at all. However, md99, you really sound like a defensive PC fanboy. There are tons of scary games on console, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Siren, WAY more than on PC at least. Why would the consoles make a difference in this design? It just sounds like you're reaching for an excuse to put down consoles...

On the subject of Shogo, I didn't really like the game, it was such a stereotypical Westerner design take on anime games. A weeaboo designed game if you know what that means. It really lacked the 'feel' I would have gotten if it was designed by actual Japanese. Take note, I'm not saying their games are 'better' at all, in fact I think Japan is trailing these days, but it certainly has a different design aesthetic.

Every time when developers say "a real destructible environment", it's always just a few buildings which can be blown up (to a certain degree).. not everything, so it's not an environment which is destructible, but 3 houses.

Man, after the masterpieces that were FEAR (PC), and Condemned 1 and 2 (360), Monolith officially became of Epic and Valve quality to me. Definitely among the best there is. No question about it. Looking forward to this, but I don't see how it could possibly be any better than Condemned 2. Maybe they'll continue to surprise me.
