Video PS3

Yesterday, Quantic Dream and David Cage revealed their new tech KARA. It is not the studio's next game and you also might want to know that it was created a year ago. The video and a gallery inside.

Tech Demo's are always amazing.

Anyone remember Motorstrom's Tech Demo when advertising the PS3? Now that was amazing!

You can watch the trailer on YouTube (Kara a PS3 new technology). It looks really impressive and shows that the PS3 still holds very good.

awesome tech demo, and more importantly, it's a believable tech demo. not a pipe dream like some. heavy rain wasnt far off this aside from the dead eyes so i'm confident their next actual game will be just as good as this visually.

Put this in a really controllable game like say a RPG and then we can talk about an evolution of performances, now put some effort on a history with likable characters with this type of performances.

We got ourselves a breakthrough in wich it will be measured a before and after this game.

BUt put it in a game not in a QTEs fest.

Yes, but the Motorstorm demo was obviously bullshit and clearly pre-rendered. This isn't. A full blown game using this tech won't look this good. It'll be close, maybe the facial models will look the same, but there will be cut-backs in other areas. It's the same with most tech demos. I personally think what we see here is good enough for games, even next gen ones. I mean, it's completely convincing and looks astonishing and a reminder to me just how far games have come in the last decade or so. Impressive.

Not an entirely new concept, but still a cool one :) I don't see anything break-through here tech wise though. Hell, it's just mocap with faces too (something Ninja theory has been doing since Heavenly sword). That and it's just a cutscene (albeit well written, which is nice). Show me an engaging gameplay animation system and I'll be impressed. They need to start doing AI routines for facial animations so they are constantly changing depending on what's going on. I despise the game-play manaquins that suddenly become full of life during cut-scenes...

The Motorstorm video was a render produced by a visual effects studio. It was never in any way realtime or capable of being so.

The video here from Quantic Dream is believably realtime,, although I have of wonder what the point of it is with next-gen hardware not far off.

The point of it is obviously devs are still finding new ways and developing new tech even for this generation. Just because a new gen is around the corner, it doesn't mean they should stop developing new technologies that can be applied to the current gen. It just means that when the next gen comes, they can be ready for it and hit the ground running with some impressive features. The point is creating believable characters in this demo, I believe. They did a fine job. There also looks like some fancy lighting effects going on there. Real time global illumination and at least what appears to be a trick sub surface scattering effect. The modelling is also very impressive, but it would remain to be seen if the same poly level could be applied to an actual game. If a game comes out this generation looking exactly like that, then I'll be impressed. I'd be pleased if this were the look of first generation titles on the next gen.

It looks great but really...it just means prettier cutscenes. I kinda wish they'd do something that made their gams insteresting to PLAY rather than pretty to look at :P

I mean Quantic Dream needs to do a minimum of two things. First fire David Cage, cause he is the worst hack writer ever, second, add more game to your games. I mean if Heavy Rain wasn't stupid storywise and managed to engage me a few times through out i might ahve enjoyed it. I know i've been raging on this shit before, but why couldn't you just drive the car yourself in the card scene? Why did that have to be QTE?

Anyway, great animation capture. Hope to see it used in some games tha don't blow :)

Funny considering for years, every female character I create in RPGs I name them Kara, I like the name lol
Engine is good, I just dont like the genre they use it in.

I hope someday we get to see this sort of thing in a action RPG so we get proper facial expressions, only one I can think of that does it good enough is Mass Effect series.

The thing I loved most about this tech demo and took away from it are that there are believable writers in the game industry who can evoke emotion even in me.

I like feeling an emotional connection to media as it means you can invest more in the story they are trying to create.

GFX are also great in this vid, kudos to the devs.

@Xoar Lol that was a "Target Render" dude. No way it was realtime. The Killzone 2 2005 E3 Trailer was also a "Target Render". It something the deeloper aims for then. With Killzone 2 they actually pulled it off pretty well. The Motorstorm one, lol, no just no.

Not really impressed with the demo - at least not with the tech. I've seen much better already. And even though that 'much better' is geared towards PC, cloud and next-gen, better is still better.
Ahh so you are not impressed but you are impressed with PC tech demos...

You are aware that thanks to Microsoft rushing a console gen... instead of waiting the two years and making their console based on Dx10 GPUs, both, and read that BOTH current gen consoles are based on early 2005 tech GPUs.

Try not to let your head explode thinking about that and your claim that better is better is bullshit.

A top of the line PC graphics card from EARLY 2005 cost and average of $500 to $600 for both Nvidia and ATI back then. and remember thats ONLY for the graphics card, not the CPU and ram and motherboard, etc.

Those PC 2005 graphics cards were surpassed by over twice the raw performance in 2007, again with top of the line non-overclocked PC graphics cards that still cost $500 to $400 each. And that PC cycle continues on.

Now I have a GeForce GTS 250 1GB (G92b), thats a toaster and ancient GPU here in 2012 yet that card in my system can render all of the impressive Nvidia tech demos up to the Medusa tech demo that uses some ridiculous levels of rendering that I am not going to bother listing, yet you can manipulate it and it completely destroys both the human head and Adriane tech demos.

So just crying about how current PCs are just so impressive when even the game dev whom already has shipped a finished retail game with Heavy Rain confirmed that its just a basic tech demo to give an indication of their future current gen console tech for their next current gen game.

Give up some respect to Quantic Dream for at least trying and not sitting on their collective laurels, they are improving their tech and NO it does not make sense to believe that ZOMG thats teh next gen console graphix because not only does it not make sense but you are completely missing the point of console game development and advancements.

The PS3 has a higher installed user base than it did when Heavy Rain was released, so it makes more sense to expect the new game to do much better in terms of sales.

Now if you did not like Heavy Rain thats fine no one is forcing you however your argument of realism is crap, why don't you go ask COD players that, they seem to think that COD is a realistic game and thats pure BS because number one your health does not magically re-generate after getting shot or jumping from a second floor window with a rifle, a bazooka, hand gun, grenades and flash bangs because they add more weight to your body resulting in possible and permanent injury. and thats not going into the graphics that current gen gamers seem to believe is realism.

The point of this tech demo was to convey the tech and the emotion, not realism, where have you seen a humanoid android like that? that does the exact same things as the one in the video game, no where thats where.

@andrewsqual you hit the nail on the head, game devs make target renders and tech demos all the time however we are talking about PS3 here so there will be some people with huge personal problems against that.

So to Xoar I would say hey how about that Halo target render that never delivered the enviromental reflections in Master Chiefs visor, how do you like that, how do you like how the graphics of both H3 and H-Reach never matched up with that CGI target render used as a tv commercial.

Also you need to go play Heavy Rain and LA Noire before posting negative comments of graphics on this very simple tech demo.
