Video PC Xbox 360 PS3

We are running a bit late but it took us a while to get our copy of the PC version of Rage, which is why we could not show you some 1080p footage before. In this 60 fps video, you will occasionally notice some texture pop-up, though the patch which was released made them more bearable. Unfortunately, textures are still terribly poor when you get close, which, for a PC game, is really disappointing. ID Software said a HD texture pack is on its way, so I guess we will have to be a bit more patient...

"Unfortunately, textures are still terribly poor when you get close, which, for a PC game, is really disappointing."

You have completely missed the point of id tech 5. It's about the big picture, about flawless texture blending between models, about endless texture variation, and about incredibly high end radiosity lighting baked into the textures at 1:1 resolution. It also nicely gets around all the issues of making normal maps work well with pre-baked light maps.

Rage's tech is frankly an amazing idea paired the best art in the games industry. That the resolution isn't quite as high as other games up close is like complaining the mona lisa isn't as detailed up close as a digital photo of a hobo.

Step back, and take in the scene. No other game can match it.

I bet the file size of the HD texture pack is going to be at least 15 GB.

Downloaded this piece of crap, it was so laggy even on my pretty high end machine (texture popping, no options, etc) that I just deleted it. Good thing we PC gamers have a chance to try games first before buying. Maybe gonna try it much later, after few patches and drivers, when they release high res textures too.

That's all fine and good, but most textures still look like complete ass, close up.

awesome game.

I guess since Rage didn't have a demo you mean you torrented it...

Yeah ok, but the game still has some horrible textures and guess what, you get to see them very well when in enclosed environments. :)

I think it's a shame, no matter how great the game looks aside from that.

the game run perfect on my pc, but the only issue i had was the really bad popins, gameplay was solid, and i love the npc characters style and animation, what made me laugh is when i was speeding through the world in vehicle no popins were happening, its when i was just walking about on foot...lol

To shut up the people who'd rather scrutinize the texture quality than just enjoy how great the game looks while it's just being played.

So the game actually looks half decent at medium to short range?

There won't be one. Carmack has already said that the source textures are not that much different to the ones you see, which makes sense seeing that the textures scream console all over them. Pity. I'd love to have seen the game if it were PC only. Doesn't bod well for Doom 4 either if it's aimed at the console market, which it absolutely shouldn't be. It's wasting the entire point of what Tech 5 is all about tbh. Good luck to anyone wanting to mod this with alpha and normal maps in HD. It took a team of artists a few years to skin the game as it is. The game still look fantastic, though; but you still can't help but wonder what it would have looked like if the textures were highly detailed. Nothing would get near it.

Oh, and what in the blue fuck were Id thinking with that ending? Seriously! That ending was a fucking insult! Disgusted with it.

I played the game on 360... rented it from gamefly. The textures are lousy when in a room, up close. The exterior vistas are some of the best on 360. Going up against the bad guys is basically all inside, monster closets like Doom3. There is no vastness of environments. I liked how you always had to travel some distance in say Red Dead Redemption. The warring factions are virtually right next door. The character lines/depth is very shallow and under developed. I think the Id tech would be wonderful if used in racer like a rally game, but I was very dissapointed in this game... much like Brink this year. And Id? You really missed out on putting a true multiplayer experience onto the game. I'd recommend skipping until it hits the bargain bin. I did get texture popin on the 360 as well, but the thing that was disappointing on the graphics front was the abysmal quality of the textues inside rooms, in close quarters... looked like Xbox1/PS2 quality. Stark contrast to the outside exterior views.

Yet Call of Duty is constantly given all kinds of props despite looking much worse. Rage is supposed to run well, and look good, not look amazing. It's a 60FPS console title, and it looks damned good for it. Interiors may not be amazing, but the exteriors look awesome, and are a lot more detailed and interesting then most exteriors in even better looking games. Stop bitching. It looks fine. Not every PC game needs to rival Crysis. If they wanted to strive for variety and performance over having super high resolution textures, good for them. And this is coming from a "graphics whore."

The texture quality isn't as annoying as the static environments, IMO. Sure, there is some dust blowing about, but there are no moving plants or cables (which are there), and the fire and it's smoke are blowing in the opposite direction from the dust. Just sayin' there are a number of things like that that keep my jaw where it belongs graphics wise. I did actually enjoy the Giantbomb quick-look though...

If developers promise you something beutifull it aint stupid that (pc)(console)gamers are paying more attention to the graphics then gameplay.
Look @ Dark souls ,it looks average but no one cares because the developer was not going about the graphics.

But the ID Tech engine is a failed concept.
It doesnt improve performance,Static lightning, some textures are high res some not...etc.
But the gameplay on the other hand feels great ,and shows it has been made bij a team with alot of experience.

Also, I really like the feel of the game. Love the way its played. Nothing dull about it. Its all opinions.

Game took long to come out, hype train should of been derailed in 2008 which IMO it did, textures take too long to render and in some places look absolute garbage, id and no competitive online MP is like Traci Lords and no tit's.......it took you this long and all you can muster is some boring dreary Co-Op?, and Carmack a man that opens his mouth and the entire nation falls asleep....

DOOM 3 and now this, the only good thing to come from those guys in the last 10 years was the web based browsing mayhem of Quake Live! Seems id should of just gave up after Wolfenstein......

edit** i've not woke up yet so my post might sound like a pile of crap to some and probably me when i see it this afternoon ;D
