Rockstar Games has just shared the news on their website that Red Dead Redemption 2 is now coming in Spring 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Formally revealed in October 2016 along with the game's first trailer, the title was initially expected to launch this Fall. To ease the pain, new screenshots inside.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Is Now Coming Spring 2018

Red Dead Redemption 2 is now set to launch Spring 2018 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans.

We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready. We are really excited to bring you more details about the game this summer. In the meantime, please enjoy this selection of new screenshots from the world of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Not surpring, at all. I, like many other people, thought Red Dead Redemption 2 would be delayed. Rockstar is very ambitious with its games, on both a technical and content levels, they're second to none - not even Naughty Dog, since they only do exclusive and linear games. And these things take a lot of time to polish to a level that they would be satisfied, so it was expected. Still, they should never had given a release window in the first trailer.

It's hard to judge the visual quality by only these images, which to be honest, don't look very good image quality wise, not the content of the images. Would much had prefered a trailer instead, but that might have made the news even worse. I'm sure the final game will be fantastic.

Game2k, it would be nice if you could add Rockstar's official message to the news synopsis, as stated in their official blog (link below):

"This outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans.

Going by that last phrase, it implies that they will share more details - possibly a trailer and/or gameplay - this summer, which could be at E3 or at a later date. But it would be nice to have these details in the news, instead of finding out through other sites.

Either way, thanks for all the work you do and keep it up.

The screenshots look gorgeous but as i said in the reveal trailer the image quality is not that great. It looks like it uses some sort of AA technique that creates a lot of artifacts. I hope they improve that by launch but im also im pretty confident that the ps4 pro and scorpio won't have this issue considering they will be much higher resolution. These 1080p screenshots have to be from a standar ps4 for sure, especially when you look at the poor anisotropic filtering on some of these screens

For me, the most impressive thing visually in this game is the distance LOD and draw distance. Even in the reveal trailer you can see grass and shadows so far in the distance which is something you usually see only on the highest settings on a pc

And now spring 2018 games have to worry about releasing close to rdr2, unless it gets delayed again. Especially sony's first party games which usually release around spring, they need to space them out.

I think by artifacts he means a really soft IQ. Its very fuzzy edged.

Completely intentional in my opinion. They'll follow the first Red Dead Redemption's artistic direction, the game was willingly given a sort of messy, blurry, dusty look, the game was never intended to look clean. I think we'll have something similar with the sequel, though I'm not sure it is appropriate to comment IQ on "screenshots" such as these, it seems no one at Rockstar thought about it when releasing them, they were only trying to give us a grasp of the artistic feel of the title. But that's just my opinion ;)

That fuzziness has always been part of Rockstar's engine. GTA IV had it pretty heavy.

just because it was an issue in a previous rockstar game doesn't stop it being a bit of a sticking point here. the IQ could certainly be better. and i think it's down to a pretty shitty post process AA solution.

Maybe due to poor balancing in resources allocations too... Animations and lightnings were hitting pretty hard on the RAGE engine in RDR. Those horses walking towards sunset were pretty damn nice!

the price of that shitty euphoria engine i guess. nice death animations, terrible for character control. but i don't see them scrapping it anytime soon.

Don't forget the NPC's AI too, Euphoria's really good at that too! And it can be very well optimised, The Force Unleashed was great for example ;)

Are they still licensing euphoria since it was bought by zynga? If they are still using it then i really hope they manage to make movement more responsive. Max payne 3 was decent in that regard but gtav on ps4 is horrible.

I really don't think the IQ issue is because of artist choice. Its not something like film grain or chromatic aberration. It looks very clearly to me to be a side effect of their AA solution. That's why im waiting to see how it looks at much higher resolutions on ps4 pro/scorpio. And even if it is done on purpose then its a weird artistic choice because it makes the game look blurry and fuzzy which are not good things for a game. Plus, there are much better techniques to give your game a soft look in a good way. Oh and i hope all of this talk doesn't get misunderstood that i somehow think the game looks terrible or this is a huge issue or something. The game looks gorgeous, its just the only thing that bothers me graphically. Okay, maybe the anisotropic filtering too which is not gonna be an issue on ps4 pro/scorpio i bet

I've never found the character movement in GTA V to be overly problematic. Certainly there's room for improvement, but it works fine for me.

I'm not saying it was designed and thought as an artistic vision for the game, more that they tried (knowing that it was present) to make it an element of the global ambiance of the open-world, and it kinda works, for me at least. :)

Max Payne 3 is still as of today one of the most realistic games I've played in terms of physics and even character modelling. Max Payne was gorgeous, you could see the veins in the arms, the muscles twitching when firing, jumping or talking... That PC version was stunning! Max was unbalanced when he had a two-hand weapon in his left hand while firing with a gun in his right hand, the bullets trajectories and physics were perfect, there's not much to compare Max Payne 3 and GTA V/Red Dead Redemption in my opinion, except for Rockstar developing.
