Resident Evil 5 has just been released, but the first pay DLC has already been announced. It's a versus mode where 4 players can battle each other. Release in a few weeks for 400 points/5 euros, and first screens inside.

COOOOOOL, dont like it being pay for content, should really be part of the game, but 400 points is a reasonable fee anyway.
Will need to see it in action before i commit to it.

im sure there will be some out there who will defend capcoms choice to the death. lets see how fun such a control scheme works in multiplayer.

I feel that the controls are perfectly fine, but I don't get how they'll work in MP.

Yup, someone discovered this thanks to the psn trophies a few days back, blatantly taken out of the final game to make extra cash out of it later, people will say it's only 400 points, but it's the principal of it more than anything.

Agreed, I bet it's a 108kb download to unlock the mode.

Thats the thing though, i have 1500 points or so (i bought 2x2100 points, forget what the first one was for, the 2nd was for lost % the damned) and nothing to spend them on so i dont mind that way. But yea, its definately something that should be on the disk.

I can justify it other ways, got it far cheaper than the RRP anyway so it will work out fine anyway, just the fact that it should be on the disk has me feeling a bit guilty. I mean TLATD was a perfect example of what DLC should be, a whole chunk of story, new modes, new weapons, new music, the whole shebang. This is just a little bit of code to unlock something thats already on the disk.

Wait, wtf, this is DLC?

I thought this would be in the game. Wow, Capcom, way to milk it with this, and Street Fighter 4 costumes...

$5 to unlock a game mode? How in the HELL is this reasonable?!?! What if Gears of War charged extra for Horde mode, LBP charged to use the level creater tools, or SFIV charged for extra costumes (oh wait, that last one actually happened).

I don't care if you have extra M$ points. There's plenty of better things to buy with it. This is pathetic and we all need to stand against it by NOT buying it!

I think i worded that a bit wrong tbh, 400 is a helluva lot more reasonable for a game mode than what is usually charged for DLC, horse armour et al.
I was tryin to retract it somewhat with my second post, i've been doin a bit more thinking about it and the more i think the more annoyed I am.
Only a handful of people will actually buy this, even less will be online at any one time, and in a short while noone will play it, in that context i definately cant justify anything other than ignoring this.

Generally im a sucker for anything multiplayer, i buy games just for the multiplayer component (KZ 2 im lookin at you) thats why i got a bit excited and ahead of myself but have never bought multiplayer DLC (map packs etc) as they generally split the community into haves and have nots. Thats what my second post was really about, if they had added a crapload of stuff to this, tons of modes, maps, characters, weapons etc maybe some singleplayer stuff It wouldnt be judged so harshly. But its 4 player only and what they have shown so far it looks quite limited, really should have announced with a video of all the features. The basic multiplayer should be part of the shipped game, even 1 map or something, a taster, a demo, something to entice and the DLC to extend (not ideal but a helluva lot more considerate and less damaging to the community than neglecting the feature altogether).
TLATD is THE definitive example of how ALL DLC should be done and right now this screams namco and plane skins as mentioned above.

Indeed, DLC before the game is out? Fuck them. I bet its a 5kb download too, prooving that its already ingame. Isnt that illegal somehow? To charge for something the consumer has already paid for?
If the content is there, but locked i mean..

Lol, this is probably already on the disk! And since when do you charge for multiplayer? That IS NOT the way to start up a community. Offer multiplayer for free (to build up a multiplayer community) and then charge for extra maps and skins. That is the way you do it. When you charge for multiplayer, about 50% of your user base will refuse to purchase it. You are then left with a much smaller online community for people to play against.

seriously fucked up that they would remove it like that but is this really a surprise to anyone? economy is in shit and Capcom has lost millions of dollars in revenue last year, and the biggest project for them in 2009 is this game. we're lucky that they didn't make us pay for the Co-op in the game considering how much money they lost last year.

normally i wouldn't pay for this until it became free to make a point, but hey i have 420 MS points that i havn't spent in months. so might as well get it.

Actually, we are lucky that Capcom didn't charge for the online patch for the Mercenaries mode, cause I get the feeling that they could have easily done that.

First I'd like to say that charging extra to unlock content that's already on the disc is just plain WRONG. (And possibly illegal, unless it's unlockable for free through gameplay and they're just giving you the option to unlock it instantly by paying extra.)

Second, I just thought I'd let people know that you can eliminate (possibly all) screen tearing on the Xbox360 version of RE5 simply by playing either in 1080i or 720P mode. It's the same situation with Dead Rising. (Except the screen tearing in Dead Rising is a LOT worse in 1080P mode as it's permanent, not occasional like in RE5.) Personally I'm sticking to 1080P mode though as it looks very slightly better and I'm not too bothered by the occasional minor screen tearing as long as doesn't get bad. The aliasing seems to be very slightly worse than the demo though. :(

Oh yeah, to the person who said the background is static and not interactive apart from a few scripted barrels... well you're totally wrong! A lot of it IS interactive (as in you can move it, you can't actually use everything so you can't throw boxes or stuff like that as far as I know) and uses Havok physics including the so-called "scripted" barrels.

Hmm, just got an info mail from Capcom on my cell-phone. Says the price will be ¥250 or 160 MS points. And that it will be released on march 26th. Seems this info is only for Japan though, so may be different day/price for the rest of the world.

Who said they wanted a community? They just want the money, and this method works insanely well. Micro transactions have got to be one of the biggest business successes of the new console generation.
