Sega announced a few minutes ago the release at the beginning of 2010 of Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing, a game that should have lots of fans of the blue sky company rejoicing.

hope this will have levels from all segas games :)
Actually this makes it look more like a cross between Motorstorm and Excitetruck.
Sad really, as the nigh deplorable state of videogame racing really, really, REALLY could have done with another Daytona or another S.C.U.D. Race type of classic SEGA racer.
Only last year we got stuff like Pure, Wipeout HD, Motorstorm 2, GRID and Burnout Paradise. If anything the state of videogame racing has never been better.
And the notion that the larger videogame market cares about now-obscure Sega racers is a fantasy.
Instead the roster will consist of every Sonic character ever, Gum, AiAi and the thing from Samba De Amigo. Perhaps Ulala too, if we're lucky.
Really the only one I proper missed in Sega Superstars Tennis was Sho Musashi. But then I guess once you've played as the AM2 palm tree in Fighters Megamix, anything will come out short. :)
Many o the classic characters from sega games are too obscure for a title like this. I mean...i'd love to race around the track as Rolf or Rune, how about Nigel from Landstalker? But except for a few of us a little more "hard core" gamers few will probably even know about those characters so putting the shitty ones that everybody knows seems pretty logical to me, however boring it is :P
Are you sure you're not just confusing "popular ones from games you don't like" with "shitty"?
Just for the heck of it, here's my 16 characters that belongs in a game with "Sega Superstars" in the title:
Sonic
Knuckles
Alex Kid
Alterd beast guy (with powereups!)
Joe Musashi
Ax Battler
Gilius Thunderhead
Alis
Rolf
Ryo Hazuki
Hotzuma
Axel Stone
Blaze Fielding
Akira Yuki
Pai Chan
Nights
I guess games like Jet Set Radio and Space channel 5 deserves some space as well but they don't fit on my list ;)
Well you can't really blame them for where your history lies with Sega. For me, Reala and Pudding are every bit as memorable as Knuckles.
And the roster in SST has a selection from all over the place. Gilius and Alex Kidd are in there, with stages based on After Burner and Space Harrier. They've picked things from all of Sega's history, and I'll go on record and say I find every single character in SST absolutely loveable and as good a taste as any of the charm and personality of once-upon-a-time Sega.
There's also a pretty major difference between loveable characters and iconic ones. I would enjoy having a bunch of dudes in there like Apharmd off Virtual On, Bahn off Fighting Vipers, Axel off Crazy Taxi, Azel off Panzer Dragoon Saga and the list goes on and on and on. And then a little longer than that. The truth is though, those aren't very iconic, and they wouldn't necessarily fit in as well as these larger-than-the-games-they're-in type characters.
And of course I agree there could be MORE characters in there, there always can be with fanservice, but I wouldn't by any stretch call the ones in there "shitty".
If this is the biggest all Sega property we see at E3... well I'll be pretty sad.
OK, but let's hope they revamp some stuff
Bizarre are making Blur
As much as I like Bizarre, we'll wait and see.
Black Rock are making Split/Second
New franchise, we'll wait and see.
EA have finally gotten their shit together with NFS and Shift is an genuine attempt to make a proper, quality racer.
That doesn't really mean anything.
Dirt 2 and Test Drive Unlimited 2 have been teased for a good while now.
DIRT was dirt and it's being made by Codemasters, but yeah, TDU is worth looking forward if they manage to tweak the handling.
Only last year we got stuff like Pure, Wipeout HD, Motorstorm 2, GRID and Burnout Paradise. If anything the state of videogame racing has never been better.
None of those games have a lasting appeal I'm sorry. They are not BAD, but they are really not worth a buy for example. GRID was DIRT.
Rallisport Challenge 2, PGR2, THQ's MotoGP (when it was still fresh), Gran Turismo 4, GTR, rFactor, Forza, Burnout 3, Outrun 2 (as much as I think there's no much to it).
All these came out in the 2004-2005 range, all these games will leave a mark and something important to the genre, unlike the bunch of averages that have been coming up lately. And of course, there were a lot of games like the ones you mentioned, for example TOCA 3, which although a good game, it lacks overall--not something worth having (even though I do have it, lol).
So yeah, this generation has been totally lacking in racing games. Aside from Forza, PGRs, and perhaps Motorstorm, nothing has really made an impact.
