Sega had teased us for a few months now about a possible 2D Sonic game for home consoles, code named Project Needlemouse. Here it is now, named Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode I and to be released this summer on PSN, XBLA and Wiiware, with a first trailer.

I had hoped they would have learned about what worked with Sonic in 3D (Sonic Adventure, parts of Sonic Unleashed) and created a decent new platformer. What this suggests is that Sega's mascot doesn't have a place for the present/future unless it's stripped back heavily, and I think that is misguided.
I know many will be pleased with this, but I am not.
Oh well.
They were good at the time, yes. But play them today and you'll see that they haven't aged very well.
Although, I bet if people will be unpleased with Sonic 4 they'll blame Sega.
I think that's why it's episodic actually.

they need to sort out the leg animation tho. he looks like he's doing a slow jog rather then the crazy spinning action of the older games. makes it look weird as hell.
And don't F'up the music!

I do agree that 2D Sonic games are quite lacking when you play them at length but thats more to do with the generation they were made in, back then we were happy to just dart around the screen killing stuff.
Of course there is nothing stopping Sega actually evoling 2D sonic maybe putting a branching story line in with unlockable levels etc, of course I'm asking for too much now.
