Xbox 360

Square-Enix put up a new trailer of Star Ocean: The Last Hope on Xbox Live Marketplace, unfortunately only in poor streaming quality. We captured it but it wasn't good enough to have in full 720p quality.

The more i see of this game the more i realize that this is a game i should avoid. The voices are just terrible and the animation is sub par. It looks alright in most other respects (a few shoddy textures here and there) but...nah, i think this is where i abandon Tri-ace.

WOW! and you got that the voice acting is bad from just those few lines in this trailer ?

Yes the few lines delivered in this trailer were terrible and set a horrid tone for the game.

I'm just disappointed/disgusted by the pedo-artstyle Square-Enix went.
This game just has too much of a Xenosaga-look to it for my tastes.
Definately not gonna buy, sorry...

I got that the voice actors were bad from all the previous trailers combined. Ugh. If there is a JP VA option, I'll probably bite.

I like the trailer.
The voices are okay and I don't expect it to be synchronic to the lips, it's a Japanese game after all.
Can’t wait to stop the Borg!

I don't mind the (two) voices, myself, but everything in this trailer reminds me of some cheesy sci-fi tv show... which is fine by me. Also, I do think square's North American marketing team is aiming for a more "western" approach for the trailer, and I think they nailed it.

All of the previous SO games had poor VA, especially 3. From what I've heard, this is at least bearable except for the little girl's voice.

This reasoning may sound absolutely rediculous, but if this game is fun I'm gonna play it.

That does indeed sound absolutely rediculous my friend.
I personaly am only going to buy it if it looks good..i dont care what it plays like. Luckily it looks stunning....ofcourse i would think it looks even better if it wasnt 360 exclusive. Hell i'd probably wouldnt even be complaining about the voice acting (which is of the same standard as every square game..even that of the FF's that his the ps2) if it wasnt 360 exclusive...crazy i know.

Oh yeah, the little girl's voice. That stood out to me as the worst of the bunch. Remember the line about leaving her grandfather?

VA is terrible, yes, but who cares if as an rpg is a great game as I expect since it was the main focus for Tir-Ace. Graphics are fantastic, the OST is really nice and the gamplay looks fun. And if the story is deep enough then it is a must for me.

Poor VA really takes me out of a game. I'd rate its importance up there on the same level as story and graphics. Because, let's face it. A well written scene can be derailed by poor voice acting, especially if it is a sad scene with laughable voice acting. So, hopefully these are just place holder otherwise Square needs to fire its localization staff. Before FFXIII releases. Or else we could get even more laughable voice acting.

looks great to me, SO games always have the best plots and battle systems, this looks to be more of the same. Im a sucker for cheezy sci fi plots myself, we dont really have any other options with rpgs in that area.(love star trek, star wars, babylon 5, life force, etc...)

Megido, I find myself agreeing with you more often than not, but this time I'll have to disagree. Personally, I think this is looking better than any japanese rpg out this generation so far. From this trailer, the VA is passable IMO. I like the shaders, and the combat actually looks enjoyable. I don't mind if something is derrivative as long as it's done well. Only thing that bothers me is the whole "I'm a 16 year old space warrior" thing, although I do get that the japanese like that sort of thing...

Frozpot: yeah for a jrpg it looks good, but unfortunately that isn't saying much. The game doesn't look that bad, but the mediocre animation just kills it for me. If you are really in to jrpgs then this game will probably be great, but i'm insanely picky when it comes to this genre and only like a few select titles...tri-ace are responsible for a few of those, but it seems like they have changed direction since the good old days of Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean 2.

The animations is quite good in fact, only bad animations this game have is in some cutscenes, but animations while fighting, moving around is top notch more then most games out there currently.

Only thing I hate and always will is the DUB, nothing will change that, only played one game with OKish dub so far in my life and that was Lost Odyssey, but then again they did put some effort into it....

LO had a far better english track then it did jpn track, but the original track was created in english so one could say the jpn was a dub in that game.(My jpn copy had the english track as well in LO) SO games have been panned across the board in the past for bad dubs(although I loved them) so I wouldnt expect too much of a change here.

Have you played SO2 recently? Its a good game, but the animations arent very good, the characters look even younger than SO4's, and the battle system seems a bit underdeveloped.(Playing through the PSP release for the second time this month now) Still a great game, but rose colored glasses are present with it I think.

I wish they would drop the cutscenes in SO4 though, they just dont seem to fit in or match the battles, which look amazing. Oh well, only 24 days to go. Maybe 22 if I can get a copy early.

Runex: SO2 had a decent battle system (not perfect ofc), some great character building and item crafting and great music. All in all it was a pretty original experience. I'm not going to deny that it has aged and that perhaps it was a better game then than it is now, but it stood out from the competition. As for the animation, you can't compare it. There's more than 10 years in between the games and SO2 is in 2d.

Same goes for VP, it did something new. Something more than just an angst driven teen drama fueled by random encounters and and that's why i liked them. To me the genre of jrpgs is stale, all games do the same thing with no ambition to drive the genre forward. It's always the same cheesy shonen stories, filled to the brim with pseudo philosophical crap (xenogears anyone? Flame suite on) and i'm just sick of it. Tri-ace was one of few developers that didn't do that but it seems that they've totally lost their flare (SO3 and IU are my prime examples of this, but from what i've seen of VP Silmeria it seems sort of sucky as well).

But hey, these are just my personal opinions, and like i said earlier: if you like jrpgs in general then this game will probably be a blast.
