Insomniac Games revealed yesterday Edge of Nowhere, the studio's new VR action-adventure game built for Oculus Rift. The game brings you near the Antarctic mountains for a rescue mission, which eventually puts you in the unknown where nothing is as it seems. Get a first glimpse with the teaser inside.

Why should it be limited to be exclusively be just played in first person?

I think it'd be pretty cool to play a platformer, or an RTS where you can look down, almost god-like, on what you're playing. There's also the 3d element the headset brings. I'm glad there will be variety, instead of constant FPS's with it.

I think VR will be good for third person because of jumping accuracy (you can judge perspective/ distance easier) which I usually find frustrating, plus you can appreciate your character better (especially if customized) as they will appear larger and in proper 3D.

Dunno what it was, but something about the camera really made the whole VR concept click with me. This looks like it'd be pretty amazing with the your whole focus on it.

Simple, really. The less demanding the game, the more performance. Performance is paramount in VR over every thing else. Honestly, I think I could play a game inside the rift with visuals from 1995 and still feel immersed by it. If the game gives a sense of presence, then it works in concept no matter how it looks. This game looks like it'll have a great atmosphere to it.

Well, yes partially. But it's also a lot harder to nail all of the heavy effects that photorealistic games use to look as good as they do in VR because of weird issues in how things are normally rendered. Rendering from two different perspectives introduces some challenges.

Nope. And in fact, third person experiences are really neat. And really it's what you need to make cameras in games like God Of War to work better. First person is certainly a very appealing route to go with VR but it's far from the only one. Even just the sense of scale and depth and freedom to look around is enough to make for an interesting 3rd person experience. Even cooler is when you have to actually move around physically in that space to see around things or the like.

I never thought of that. Interesting. Are there any examples of what kinds of things are difficult to do? So far there are a good few games that are working in the rift that are modern titles, but they've been hacked to do so. Some work better than others. I'd also imagine that keeping a clean, and a lack of detail in textures is intentional by design. I haven't tried a working Rift yet, but I'd like to think that more detail inside one could have a bit of a negative effect due to the lack of resolution, so a more sparse, yet colourful and clean, style would have a more lenient and smoother effect on the eyes that gels things together. I could be wrong about that, though.
