Xbox 360 PS3

Mirror's Edge is playable at Electronic Arts' booth, and while you've certainly all seen this level dozens of times before I'm still putting this video online since for once it's the 360 version running and not the PS3 one. Old build too.

The 360 version seems to be shaping up quite nicely, but I'd much rather play with the good ol' Dualshock.

Graphically identical but there was some heavy screen tear in there, I think it was the game since it was all within the TV frame. It was an old build though.

This is a really ipressive game, although I saw this level many times, it still gives me goosebumps. The player playing the game is really good at it. Was it a developper?
Yep.
Tearing is supposed to be fixed in the current build.

WOW very nice! Graphics are really nice but I thought they said there are multiple ways of completing levels but every video all go the same way :S

Dualshock is useless for FPS games I find much prefer the 360 controller.

At the very least it's great they try to make some new within fps genre. Looking forward to it. Although we've had great shooters this gen, innovation and originality is always welcome.

If you think Dualshock is useless for FPS, I think you are using the controller wrong. ;)

Or you're unbelievably biased? It's a well known issue that the Dual Shock has a massive deadzone on both analogue sticks - particularly towards the centre, resting position, which isn't evident on the Xbox 360 controller (or even the Dreamcast controller). It's an awful controller for FPS games - the best feature of it is the D-Pad which is much better than the 360s.

Its easier to operate with the xbox-controller.
The sticks are shifted, which helps your coordination.
On the PS-controller, your hands tend to operate symmetrically, because the positioning of your hands is symmetrical when you use the sticks simultaneously.

Ergonomic fact.

Of course you can play fps on the ps at least as good as on the box, but for an unexpierienced player, it takes more practice.

Omg, or ur just a fanboy.

I rather prefer the PS1 Pad than playing with the 360 one. It just feels so cheap. The buttons, the analog stiks. And i hate the RT and LT triggers. I know it cuz i buyed one to play gears on pc but instead i switched to the ds3 with unoffical drivers which just feels better in the hands.

Just because you think DS is bad for FPS doesn't make it so.
I have played alot of FPS games with the PS3 controller and I haven't had any issues with it.

The only thing that is bad with the controller (for me atleast) is that the analogs can break get loose very fast if you "abuse" them.

For example COD4, tap in L3 and then push forward for sprinting...doing that alot will make the left analog worn out.

Besides, dont say Kukuk is "unbeliveably biased" if he says DS is good.

When it comes to FPS, its a personal prefrence of what they prefer in terms of controller.

For me I like both DS or 360, doesnt matter I will still play good or bad depending on how good I am in the game.

Of course you think its crappy. If you use the same shaped controller for more than 10 years and play just one game with another one, it really isn't a miracle that you hate the 360 controller.

Thats what they call accustomization.

I think its a shame that that sony's controller doesn't really evolve.
I do allready have small hands and still my thumbs are too long to move the PS-sticks comfortably. Whats more, I cant grab the controller with my entire hand. My little finger always dangels around lazyly, because the "horns" are too short.

@topic:

I wonder how long it takes to finish the game when you rush like that...

Don't want to continue the controller war but I have to quickly agree with Redneck. It's not which controller is better, but which one are you more familiar with.
If you use and are comfortable with both, then win win I guess.

In the past I found myself going from a DC to a PS1 (DC broke, uncle gave me PS with all his games.. couldn't say no really!) and damn that transition wasn't smooth. But after a while I got used to it.

Anyway I'll cut myself off there before I ramble on too much.

ONTOPIC: Can't wait to get my hands on this game! :)

this is shaping up nicely, I'm glad that so far they've only shown a couple of different environments, it keeps it fresh and to be honest I'm not getting sick of seeing the same level over and over again as I'm starting to see different possible routes...a day one purchase for sure!

Since both versions look the same now we have to fight over controllers, thats sad.

But but but [Insert] Controller is better!!! Really because of [un-researched biased comment].

I like the DS3, I just do... Mostly since all the buttons actually work on it. (Hmmm was that biased?)

nice and smooth.. quite abit of screen tearing though, and sadly if Dices last effort is to go by the screen tearing is probably here to stay.

I'm still not sold on this game though. Its technically beautiful, and looks refreshing..and no doubt plays refreshingly. But that by no means secures it as an instant modern classic.
I get concerned alittle with the gameplay mechanics when it comes to actually fighting against your enemy in it. The AI doesnt seem up to scratch, and again with dices last effort that was also plauged by bad AI thats alittle concerning. But i also feel that the AI's possibly dumbed down to make allowences for the controls...just as a wii game would do. By that i mean that the gameplay mechanics of this are totally different to a regular fps which would allow reaction times for you to take cover and focus on a target. This being more a first person platformer the hit detection seems alot more forgiving and the enemys dumbed down to stand there and allow you to find them.

I guess i just hope it has alot more hidden depths, rather than shown all its cards in the very first level. Because i do get a sense that its more a racing game than anything else.

It's an old build, bleachedsmiles, so it likely won't be in the final build (or it'll be much reduced anyway) as the PS3 gameplay footage I've seen doesn't appear to have any screen tearing.

Mirror's Edge looks rather cool but I can't help thinking the first person perspective will make the game harder to play and that there isn't enough there to carry the whole game. I'd really like to play a demo as I'm not pre-ordering it until I've tried it even though the concept interests me.

looks like it will get old fast imo... with fp games like far cry coming out i feel that id like a game with much more freedom. everything seems so linear and to me the environments are very boring. just my opinion

completely agree... the 360 controllers by far the most comfortable one i've used.. the ps3 controllers what i like least about the console actually..just feels too light, and you really notice the lack of vibrations in racing games and fps's... plus playing them without proper triggers just feels wrong.

Oh yeah, and i can hook a mic to my 360 pad

The one thing my ps3 pad does have over the 360 one though is a better D pad.. something you really notice when trying to play street fighter HD on the 360

why havn't you bought a DS3? it makes the pad feel weightier and ads vibration....plus, for a couple quid you can get those gioteck (sp?) triggers (god send of motorstorm). personally ps3 pad and 360 pad are equal in terms of comfort and quality for me, 360 pad has a more intuative FPS layout, although ps3 is easily adapatable given some time. and as you said, ps3 pad has a WAY better D-pad.

This game is hands down the best looking game around, by a large margin. Graphics are insane!

Oh, just to add to the side-discussion...the PS3 controller is easily the worst out there along with the PS2 controller, it really is horrible. The 360 is definitely the best out there, it's pretty much perfect. Unfortunately, that's the only well built piece of hardware coming from MS. Sony easily has the upper hand in terms of quality hardware, except for the controller.

Edit: Oh yeah, 360 d-pad's crap. Fortunately I hate arcade fighters and the likes so it doesn't bother me as much.

If the 360's d-pad was fixed, it'd be the perfect controller for me. There's absolutely nothing else wrong with it in my opinion, and I really haven't been able to say that about any controller.
