Video PS4

It's been one month since the complete video of The Dark Sorcerer, by Quantic Dream, has been available on youtube with a quality not really worthy of a tech demo, so I'm happy to put this much better version online. Enjoy :)

Looks good but resolution is not actually Full HD because the demo is scoped between two black bars. I think this is a trick to reduce the number of pixels.

There are numerous times within this demo where my mind just switches to believing what I'm seeing is real, and then other times when I'm very aware it's not. Stunning to say the least though and easily the best 'face tech' I've seen from next gen.. just a shame it was not as emotionally gripping or well realised as the Kara demo. Quite funny though.

Its just letter boxing to get a cinematic 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Its like having a 1920x1080 resolution, then adding black boarders to top and bottom. Its just to achieve a certain look, you dont really lose anything expect whats being "blocked/cropped."

In other word they're trying to make you think its film.

Looks amazing. But what would we see if we had free control of the camera? So my question is: can they make an interactive game at this quality standard without seeing the tricks they are using to render as little as possible?
They did it with heavy rain. The tech demo for that was a controlled, fixed, directed video, the game that followed let you freely move and interact and managed to look even better, and beyond pushes that even further. The fact this is running on that same engine as beyond, i think it's safe to say, with a cinematic story driven game like heavy rain and beyond, we should get something equal to, if not better then this.

Now, do i expect this sort of thing is some giant, elders scrolls game? No.

I actually thought that the faces in the Remedy game looks far, far better, and that wasn't just a tech demo.

Really? I thought they looked a bit plastic doll, the remedy game was equal to something like infamous second son for me. Good, as where all the mo-capped face tech shown at E3. But this was in a league of its own for me, mainly because unlike the others, this one actually managed to trick me a good few times.

I was more impressed by the subtle expressions in Remedy's project. This was good for being very expressive, but they picked a subject and actor that would enforce that. Most facial animation in games isn't going to be this expressive just because there won't be any need for it, so subtler animation impresses me far more. And it's a lot harder to get the tiny movements of the face than big bombass theatre actor motions.

You're right about the why, but I assure you they didn't render in those black boxes in this case. It's a tech demo so they would squeezed every bit of performance out. Plus, the entire video has that letterboxing, which means they had no reason at all to render past it. and that means they are rendering at somewhere probably between 2/3 anad 3/4 of 1080 vertical resolution.

It is a very confusing scenario. I mean the Sorcerer is supposed to be an actor? But then the goblin is actually real and not a guy playing a role? I think mister Cage should stick to drama as it just wasn't that funny.
Incredible looking though and its only 2013 :)

Cycle of every Quantic Dream game:

*tech demo released*
doubters: OMG THIS CAN'T BE A REAL GAME!
*real game releases, looks better than the tech demo*

Happened with the French lady and then Heavy Rain. Happened with the robotic lady and then Beyond.

So our minds might not fathom it now, but trust me their real PS4 game will look as good or better than this.

And then 3 years later, we will think these graphics are meh.

Quantic Dream games are very scripted on limited environments with low level of action scenarios and lack of A.Is.technically theres not much difference between a tech demo and their games.

I think the opposite. This was a much more complex performance than what was shown in the Remedy demo. There was nothing to the scenario in the demo that they showed, minimal interaction. Also, I am more certain that QD will show this level of visuals in there game compared to Remedy. Cutscenes and gameplay differed a bit in Alan Wake (cutscenes had extra effects and some better assets I thought, but were horribly compressed).

@Mehdino: Not sure you are someone who should be throwing out accusations...pot and kettle and all that.

The faces in this don't look nearly as good as some are making it out, certainly not easy to mistake for real life lol. I just really found heavy rain to be a major letdown so I'm not gonna get very hyped for this either.

All this means is that RPGs are going to look sick on this console. They barely need to be pre-rendered with this level of detail!

The comedy in this is terrible and bland, Graphics look sharp but the motion capturing in this is too loose. Too many words slip past the motion capturing which shows a lot of polygonal characters flailing around, pantomiming moments.

@droezelke Go and look at the E3 2013 trailer of Beyond again mate. I out it on for the craic in a store I was working in with all the E3 PS4 game trailers and people thought it looked incredible and were asking what it was. I would respond to everybody 2Oh that's the PS4 game Beyond, oh wait, no it isn't its a PS3 game". And every one of them their jaws hit the ground.

Beyond does not look that good to be honest. Compare Beyond to Naughty Dogs work, and you will see Beyond has a lot more low resolution textures, inferior lighting and lower polygon count. I didn't think Heavy Rain looked that good. It was all a bit bland. But QD are not focusing on environments that much, but more on atmosphere, animation and such.
Hard to compare them. Naughty dog approach their visuals with a clear stylisation. Much like rockstar really. You would never look at an uncharted screenshot, environment or characer wise and think...that looks realistic. They have great textures, and great character models, sure. But they don't look realistic. QD games however do, or at least are closer to it. They're trying to digitalise real life actors, from voice to movements. Same goes for the environments. Their games look more realistic, despite having lesser texture res (although i'm pretty certain they have higher poly counts for their character models)

Fact is though, heavy rains tech demo was surpassed by heavy rain, which was surpassed by beyond. And i think it's safe to say whatever game this amounts to, will surpass the sorcerer tech demo too. This or better then this, is what we can expect from nex gen QD games. And i can't say i'd be dissapointed by that.

You got some nice taste in gaming, my friend. And you also must have some unknown power in your mind, because you make people look like obsessed talking about a company without you even mention its name. Incredible. Have a good day and keep loving whatever you want to.
