It's not really a surprise, but it's still a very good news. Atari announced today that The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena would be released in 2009 on PS3, 360 and PC, with this first screen.
On one hand i'm stoked about more Riddick, on the other hand i think that there is nothing about the original game that warrants a remake yet. Dark Athena is completely pointless imo. Riddick on xbox/PC still looks decent even though it's a few years old and it's not exactly legendarily hard to find or anything either, and there's no major lack of xboxes or PCs out there...they should have made a completely new one.
First one was well ahead of it's time in terms of execution and graphical prowess. It was immersive because of that. This should be no exception, providing Starbreeze are the guys behind this one?
This was sorta in the pipes for a while, wasn't it? And I sorta agree with Megido.. sequel, please! Hopefully when/if this game does well, we'll get what we really want. The game was (and is) terrific!

Agree. The game brought some fresh air in fps games.
I love Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick, and I didnt get a chance in the Xbox era to pick this game up.
But if this remake will be good visually (on that single shot, its hard to tell, but it looks nice) and gameplaywise...I might have a go with it.
You know how it is, everytime they release the first image, it never looks like the end product! it will be interesting amongst the hit games out right now, whether time has played its part and a new riddick game can compete and deliver

Yep yep.
I mean graphics on games keep getting better each year, atleast...and Starbreeze needs to make it a good 2009 game, from visuals to gameplay.

Yeah, its has, I saw a really old game informer that mentioned it just the other week.
Annoying that they release one completely useless screen shot though. they need to work on the shaders for the ski though, ugh.
They're working on a new movie. Whether it'll come to fruition or not is another matter.
DVD sales of the Chronicles of Riddick were pretty good and I think the game turned a tidy profit, so there's recognition that the character sells. Seeing as it's the best thing Diesel ever did outside of the Iron Giant I think you may see more of him again in future.
im pretty sure they scrapped the idea of a remake didnt they, so now its just dark athena...a propper sequel? either way im stoked (cant believe i just said "stoked"...im british FFS) riddick on xbox was, imo, the best FPS on the console. right next to strangers wrath. the game looked amazing (although jaggy as hell) had a really good story, had really good shooting, and a really well done first person stealth mechanic, and even the additional content (artwork, beta footage) was interesting. it merged standard first person gameplay with a more adventure game styled progression system. really REALLY good game. i just hope the sequel delivers.
I never really considered Riddick to be an FPS. Sure, it's first person, and sure, there are guns.. but it was a stealth game, and not an action shooter. For a good portion of the game you don't even use guns.

i'd agree in terms of maybe the first 3rd of the game, but after a point it went almost completely gun based. and a game that uses guns for majority of the games lenght, to me, is an FPS. unlike say mirrors edge where you may be lucky to use a gun at all in a level.
So Fallout must be an FPS then, eh? I mean it's first person, and there are guns, after all. If Thief were set in a modern era, people probably would have called that an FPS too. The S is a pretty important part of that acronym. I agree that there are FPS elements to the game, but it's not an FPS, at least in the traditional definition of the genre.
But then again, I wouldn't for a second consider Stranger's Wrath an FPS either.

Yeah I know I read somewhere today that they thought of making it a remake but decided that wasn't appealing.
