The stranger is back

Incredible news, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath is preparing its HD return on Playstation 3 next Easter. If you played the game in 2005 you will perfectly understand why this is such a big deal, if not, you will have no excuse for not experiencing this unfairly shunned title.

OTLEY, WEST YORKSHIRE, UK – 3rd September, 2010 – Just Add Water (JAW) is thrilled to announce the return of the critically-acclaimed Oddworld series - with an enhanced remake of the award-winning Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath coming to PlayStation®3 next Easter.

Originally released in 2005, first- and third-person action-adventure Stranger’s Wrath marks the multi-million-selling series’ first appearance on a PlayStation® console since 1998’s Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus. The game will be made available as a digital download via PlayStation® Network.

Stewart Gilray, Managing Director of JAW, said: “Since word got out that we’ve been working with Oddworld Inhabitants there have been many rumours circulating about what we’re working on. Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is the first project in what we believe will be a long and fruitful relationship. Having the chance to update this great title and release it on PS3 is just a brilliant opportunity, not least for us, but for the fans too.”

JAW has worked closely with Oddworld founders Lorne Lanning and Sherry McKenna to ensure the remake is faithful to the original moolah-chasing epic, while offering a raft of enhancements, including: stunning 720p visuals; much more detail in the characters; normal mapping and self-shadowing; re-mastered dialogue, support for PlayStation®Move; and additional bonus material still to be revealed.

In Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, players step into the role of the Stranger, a rough and tumble bounty hunter who tracks down outlaws for moolah. Using a special weapons system that gives a whole new meaning to "live" ammo, players encounter deviant species and hostile challenges along the way.

The 2005 original has a Metacritic rating of 88, was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Animation at the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences' Interactive Achievement Awards, and received numerous awards from the gaming press.

Why no Xbox 360 Version

I hope it comes to XBLA too. I tried to play the original game on my 360 but it wasn't backwards compatible with that game

oh my fucking god, this is the ONE game i own that i wished was BC on the 360, i'm stoked for this. i LOVE it, best news i've heard in ages, can't wait.

if this is indeed exclusive to PSN, i assume it's becasue of the popularity of the PSone games that are one sale there. oddworld kinda flopped when they went MS exclusive. you could say the death of the franchise. hopefully it gets the recognition it deserves the secont time around.

man. i'm seriously psyched for this. i love oddworld games.

I never had a interest when I was younger to try the series out, but I always loved how the character looked like.

Oh man, this game was so awesome (and I hate anything western)! The visuals, the witty humour, the excellent gameplay and the diversity within it were all fantastic! And you wouldn't say so from watching the vids of this game, but the shooting mechanics in this game were so damn satisfying.

Ah man, fond memories of playing this game back in the day! But why oh why a fucking remake?!!! I want a sequel goddamnit! :(

a sequel would probably require odworld inhabitants, and as far as i'm aware, they're not in the game making business anymore. the failure of munches oddysee and strangers wrath on the xbox effectively killed them.

i'd love to see a new game (strangers related or abe related), but i cant' see it happening. maybe if this sells well?

it's a pretty well known games like this are accepted better on sony consoles then on MS consoles. the first 2 oddworld games did great on the PSone, and munches oddysee WAS planned to be on the PS2 and would have no-boubt been a success too, but the title jumped platform mid development, flopped hard on the xbox, and then strangers wrath flopped again. i think we can deduce that oddworld games dont appeal to the typical xbox user, cant we?

I'm an xbox user and this game appeals to me. I even friended Lorne Lanning on facebook. This series was one of the reasons I was even interested in the 3D field. I hope they release it on Xbox LIVE.

Dev confirmed that it isn't PSN exclusive. PC version is definitely coming, 360 version is up in the air.

I always thought MS held the licence to this now.

Korndog you need to step out of your sony fanboy bubble once in a while. The comment "these sort of games are accepted better on sony consoles than on ms consoles" is pretty retarded when the examples given are games from the 32bit generation when there wasnt a MS console, and the ps1's popularity was competing with an already dead saturn. And last gen..when the game didnt even grace the ps2.

The markets also totally different now. A sony brand console nolonger dominates it. And certainly generally doesnt compete with arcade game sales.

Plus i reckon that the majority of 360 owners here owned a ps1 at one point

OMFG!!!!!!!!! THE ONE GAME I WANTED TO BE BC ON 360 IS GETTING A HD SODDING REMAKE!!!!!!!!! That's awsome bloody news! I loved this game even if I could never play it much due to not owning an xbox and not always being around friends.

Just like everyone. this is the one game I wished that was BC on 360! I still played it on my original Xbox, but was never able to show the game to other people unless if they came over to my house.

Amazing game, hilarious as hell, and really unique gameplay.
