Crystal Dynamics has announced that Tomb Raider won't be released this Fall as it was planned. Square Enix targets now Q1 2013 for the survival adventure of Lara Croft. One new screenshot inside.

A Message to the Tomb Raider Community

When Crystal Dynamics first set out to reboot the Tomb Raider franchise, there were two goals that we were extremely passionate about. The first was to create a modern Tomb Raider game that would surprise and excite gamers. The second was to make this the best game of our careers, something we would be really proud to be a part of. We truly believe that we have something very special on our hands and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Our priority now is to make sure we fully deliver the very highest quality game. In order to do this, we have decided to move the game’s release date by a few months, from Fall 2012 to the first quarter of 2013.

We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can't wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.

This better turn out good. I can't help but think it'll be wasted time tho. Not sure it'll sell well, and delays mean more money pumped into the development, which is potentially more money lost...

Yeah, i'm a glass half empty kind of guy....

Not too impressed with the character model. Something to do with the lighting and textures, but the game is far from being done. I am looking forward to this more than Uncharted 3 though for sure. I got that game on day one and still only about 1/4 of the way through. I want so badly to love Uncharted but they just don't hold my interest for some reason. The storytelling is great but I get bored pretty quickly with the gameplay. Tomb Raider got real stale for so many years but this one looks completely different. I think it will be surprisingly good and a bit more realistic.

Based on how Other M and NG3 turned out I really couldn't care less about this game anymore. Trying to 'humanize' an iconic character is a surefire way to create a shitty interactive movie that takes itself way too seriously.

Was really looking forward to this when first announced. Loved the idea of a semi open world, more realistic, survival style tomb raider.

Then when I heard that the game was mostly QTEs and utilized static cameras I completely lost interest. Hopefully they will utilize this time to remove all the cursed QTE's and add some actual gameplay to the mix. I'm still holding out a sliver of hope.....

Since when was it announced that the game is mostly QTEs? I don't remember that. They say the game will have open world exploration with a hand to hand combat system. Lara will also use Bows, guns ect.

I hate it when studios announce games and months later you haven't even seen one single gameplay trailer showing the core features of this game.

Who cares if the game is delayed or not at this point...

Not sure why people are comparing this to Uncharted3. I wonder if the whole game will be in darker settings. Hopefully this E3 they will show something good.

Both 3rd person adventure games? Uncharted was heavily influenced by TR and now it looks as if TR is heavily influenced by Uncharted.

Ehm, thats silly way of thinking.

Lara Croft is human, she doesnt have powers and can kill hordes of enemies and demons, unlike NG for example.

Besides, just because TN sucks ass for this sort of thing doesnt mean all devs suck at it. I for one look forward to it.

i can only hope that's the case. problem is, if it's just a clunkier uncharted, it seems kind of pointless. they'd need to match the level of polish of the naughty dog franchise to make it worthwhile for me.

Hmmm Uncharted 1 & 3 were not exactly polished to the amazing high standard of no.2, i do see where your coming from but surly you must realise that this is multiplatform and expecting the game to be as polished as Sony ND exclusive to one platform is surly asking too much?

i dont see why it's asking too much, animation is animation, environmental detail is environmental detail. i'm not looking for it to look as good (not many, if any games do), THAT is asking too much, i want to see the same level of polish across all facets of the game. i want lara to move dynamically, smootly, not clunkily like she has in the past. i want the environments to be interesting and detailed, well lit, well textured, not a rush job. i want the characterisation, voice work, story to be great, i want facial animations that dont look like complete ass. these are all things that can work across multi platforms, the question is, are they willing to do so? the delay indicates they are, or that they're strugging? either way, if it's just some uncharted clone, it needs to be a damn good one, or it is automatically relegated to the "pointless" pile imo.

I thiink it's more like "it's not a PS3 exclusive, so i'm gonna hod it to laughably high standards, no mater how good or bad a game it might be" :P

Also delays does not mena the game get's more time to be polished it means that either the developer was very optimistic in their time estimations OR it means they are having problem with something. Extended development time usually means it's more likely to be shit in my book :P

Not saying that has to be the case, just pointing out that delays are usually not for the better.
