Xbox 360 PS3

Ubisoft released the launch trailer of Armored Core : For Answer. It's 100% CG, but damn it looks good. This is typically the type of video that shows how much room there is still left for graphical evolution in the future game systems...

Really REALLY good CG, but how good will the game be? I used to love AC on the PSX but now i'm not so sure any more.

I play the Demo in the Japan Account and is... a game of XBOX, no Xbox 360.
For my, more poor that the one.

Yo he jugado la Demo en la cuenta Japonesa y es... un juego de XBOX, no de Xbox 360.
Para mi, mas malo que el primero.

The CG wouldn't have cost them so much that it would make much of a dent in the value of the game itself. In any case, I have the game and its graphics are passable but the gameplay is definitely quite fun. And this coming from a person who grew up as a Mechwarrior junkie.

It does look amazing, although I wish CG trailers for games would just go away. They're worthless IMO and I'd always much rather see ingame footage.

The only thing worse are target videos, meant to look like ingame footage. I still remember being fooled by the target footage released for the first GRAW at E3 before the 360 came out.

shit i dont i remember them releasing a video with really bad textures and everything at e3... then they release a newer vid showing a much better product. either way graws singleplayer was win on the 360... besides that that assault armor looked pretty vicious in this game... so uh how come they havent made this into an anime yet and if they have does it suck like the gundam series

played the demo of this scene. and it doesnt compare in terms of intensity. and thats armoured core's problem, their trailers and CG make the game seem almost zone of the enders fast and frantic, but in reality its a slow, clunky game. good trailer tho. sadly the game's crap.

Which is the exact reason for my previous post. These types of trailers do nothing more than mislead people about the actual gameplay or graphics of the final game.

The problem with AC imo is that it's pretty slow and clunky, as KORN said, and yet it's not enough simulation to excuse it. At least in Silent Line which was the last one i played. I don't have any particularly high hopes for this either, but i might "rent" it (that is, i might buy it at GAME and return it if it sucks). I really miss a good games rental service here in sweden.

The game is certainly not slow. But yes, the controls take a lot of getting used to.

much like the start of the demo mission for 'for answer' where your flying at about 500mph, its an exception to the rule, most of the time its a slow ass clunky game. not much fun at all.

i mean, i search armored core 4, first gameplay footage that comes up is this

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8GmEUHMtKCk

not the most exciting thing in the world is it, and sadly, thats what most of the game is like. just cos you have a rocket booster doesnt = fast paced gameplay. compared to ZOE this is like a snail battling a turtle.

I fail to see how a night-stealth mission that is tackling fortified structures using a long-ranged mech is supposed to be superrr fassst. That's like saying there's not enough rocket jumping or double jumping in TF2 while you're playing a Sniper.

It's a sim as well and you don't have only quick speed missions or arena matches. Now if you're complaining that you don't like the variety of missions -- disliking the ones that encourage you to fight from long-range and use cover, that's understandable.

HDTran: i wouldn't call AC a sim. Steel battalion, that's a sim. AC is an action game with customizable mechs and the slow stuff, which is abundant in the parts i've played, only serve to make it shittier than it has to be.

You're arguing complexity of controls + realism as the traits of a sim Megido.

If you're riding a Japanese mecha and want to make controls that don't alienate and force people to hunker down $$$, it doesn't make it less a sim.

You play as a merc, you do various missions that ask you to do escorts, night stealth assaults, information recovery, etc. You also have fast-paced arenas and occasionally missions that have duels between ace pilots. You can customize your mech like hell. You have control over every movement and weapon function.

Practically everything you could want from a sim as a mecha flying pilot (mission acceptance/briefings, arena duels, financial problems both on accepting missions and repair fees, true mecha customization, worrying about overheating/speed/weight/varieties of factors, mission variety, etc.) pretty much makes the experience pretty authentic (as authentic as being in that role could be). Hell, in some of the games you even have leaders/secretaries/friends constantly e-mailing you and telling you what they think.

I mean, what do you need for AC to be a sim? A 10-button process to starting up your mecha? Controlling every walking step of your mecha manually by moving each individual gear and pedal so that it has the proper footing?

What more do you need Armored Core to do to become a sim?

AC is definitely not a pure action-game. That's ZoE, Murakumo, Zegapain, etc.

Actually, if you were to put the dozens of decent-high profile mech games within the past say few years on a spectrum of action and sim.

You'd probably have Dynasty Warriors Gundam/Zone of Enders/Arcade-to-Console Gundam Games on one end, and Steel Battalion/Armored Core/Chromehounds on the other. Just try to name another mecha game that is more of a sim than Armored Core without throwing Steel Battalion out there or some old pc early 90s game with needlessly convoluted and unintuitive controls.

HDTran: well a SIMULATION of operating a mech would involve somewhat more complex controls than just boost, shoot and switch weapon. And the only thing you need to keep your eye on during a mission is ammo and HP. I miss many things that would make AC in to a simulation, and i don't think it strives to be a simulation either. I'm not saying that you need the Steel Battalion controller to play a simulation game, i just think you need to have more...simulation. At least i imagine that operating a huge hunk of metal like that would be a rather complex task. Fuel, handling, performance base on terrain/weight/wind...there are loads of factors just there. And i think it's hard to have convoluted controls in a sim. You want authentic or simplistic? You want Sim or action game?

AC has pretty much the deepest customization available, yes, and you get briefings and shit before missions, yes, but that does not make it into a simulation of operating a mech, that makes it into a game that has great customization and briefings. Both of which has nothing to do with the actual simulation as far as i've experienced the series.

Granted stuff like flipping the 5 switches in order to start your mech in Tekki is unnecessary, it could just as well be skipped, but it's also a great way to set the mood.
