Few days before Battlefield: Bad Company 2 release, Electronic Arts presents its first map pack, which will be available on launch day (March 2nd in North America). This DLC will be free, thanks to the VIP code included in the game package. It will be composed of two maps, one in Rush mode, and the other in Conquest mode.

It's all win.
And then onto GOW3.
PS3 is the place to be.
Whilst i agree with what EA have been trying to do in securing more "new" sales, rather than people getting their games preowned. I really don't like the way it's promoted as us getting something additional to what we already own.. theres a difference between ME2's dlc, and this...even if it is just the illusion that extra efferts been put into offering us free content..rather than simply being "treated" to a code that unlocks content on the disc we've just been charged £49.99rrp for and have it labelled "free".
As long as it doesn't get too out of hand I'm not too worried.
ME2 is simular.. obviously the game was designed with the dlc in mind from the very start, the dlc character being a huge part of the story arch, and removed from the finished product to download seperate...you're ofcourse no better off that way, and still sold the illusion you're getting something for free that you wouldnt of got otherwise...which the way dlc has been going may well be true.
But then if i look at the dlc pack on the way, with the vehicle, it does feel like more values added to this scheme, more of a benefit to the customer that invested in the main game new.
It's my understanding that with this, they're allowing us to unlock 2 of the maps day 1..and they next 2maps a few weeks later.. and promoting it as them supporting the game. Theres not a chance in hell that at some point one of the map packs is going to have a charge..by which time the gamers of the thought "well they did already support it with 2 free map packs"...and more inclined to pay up for the next one - maybe thats just me being cynical

Day one, anyway.
You can't blame them for trying to get sales though. If someone traded the game in a week or two after release, the store will try to sell the game on for near RRP. The promise of free content in the new box may sway a customer to pay the extra £2 or £3 for the new game.
It's a shame it's had to come to this though.
You could easily look at it another way.. that EA are locking you out of content that you've paid for untill they deem it's in their interests to give you access to it. You've got all those maps on the disc.. you're only getting access to 2 of the "free" maps on the disc day 1.. you'll have to wait till the end of the month untill you can unlock the other 2 maps on the disc.
I can understand why they would do that.. it makes you have second thoughts on trading it in.. but you're still not getting access to all the contents you've paid for day 1 due to their fear that you'll trade the game in.
But yeah, the alternative is buy it preowned and be charged a tenner to unlock it..not many would opt for that when, like you say, theres only a few quid difference between new and preowned in stores
I would love for this to backfire in their face, but we all know there are too many kids out there with their parents money, letting EA get away with this type of horseshit.
Mass Effect2...you buy the game new ( from the shop )and you get the download code...buy the game second hand and you have to pay 15USD to get the same code as what I picked up on the day of release?
Borderlands is probably the best IP ( IMHO )of the last couple of years ( honestly can you name anything bigger or better? ), and they seem to have the dlc perfected...I can't wait to go through the new content again on the PS3 ( having already previously finished the game on the eggbox360 ).
Honestly though, the multiplayer demo of BC2 has been brilliant fun, I've had more fun on the multiplayer demo map ( over the last 3weeks ).
Bad company 2 has all the things the Modern Warfare doesn't...............communication within the squad....
LOVE YOU!!

Essentially the only people who have a hard deal are the pirates and Gamestop, the developers get a good deal and the customers don't get fucked over. When the rest of the industry seems to be moving towards SecuROM and glorified rentals, this is a much appreciated move from EA.
ME 2 is a hole different matter. The DLC is stuff that didn't make it into the game, if it has been dropped at some point in the development process or was an afterthought (most likely the former), which one I don't care. I look at it as if it was a directors edition of a film, extra scenes that aren't essential to my gaming experience. In fact I can live without Zaeed who I never take along with or the shotgun that I never use or the armour that I never wear.
I'm not getting exactly how this is working.
There's a huge difference in terms of value between an actual new map and a different layout.
Getting the limited Edition as soon as it comes out :P
