Awesome, can't wait for this game. I read about their revolutionary facial animation system a while back, didn't expect it to be this impressive.

Let's hope Bethesda uses this tech with their next Fallout/Elder Scrolls.

Err, best plastic shader ever, thats more like it. This tries to take the cake, but Drake is still the best Action Doll of gaming.

You saying these faces don't look plastic? they do to me, it's the animations that are awesome

what's a skin shader or art style got to do with facial animation?

as for this, it really does have impressive facial animation. the rest of it looks kinda crap tho, but the facial animations are amazing. some of the best i've seen this gen. right up there with heavenly sword and uncharted.

i just kinda wish it didnt look like all their effort went into that ONE thing, while letting the rest of the game suffer for it (visually). heavenly sword was the same. facial animations and faces in general where amazing, but models for the rest of the bodies where like something from a PS2 game.

hmm, mouth movement is top notch, but man those are some creepy dead doll eyes. The amazing mouth animation brings out the flaws in the rest of facial animations imo

GI played a demo.
Thousands of period items have been fully modeled, and can be manipulated by the player. Near the car, Phelps sees a pair of broken glasses and a wallet. Opening the wallet, he pulls out the various cards and photos, jotting down White’s address while noting a picture of White and his wife in happier times and the name brand of the glasses. Phelps picks up the bloody pipe, rotating it around to view the inscription “Instaheat.” Elsewhere, he sees a receipt for one live pig purchased by an A. Hogan.

All this data is recorded in the player’s notepad, which serves as an information hub for all your investigations. All locations, people, and facts related to a case are stored there, allowing you to access it instantly during an interrogation. The more facts and evidence you gather, the greater your options will be during an interview.

After a conversation with a worker who reported the missing vehicle, Phelps leaves the scene to go to the address found in the wallet, Eugene White’s residence. Elizabeth White meets us at the door. The sequence that follows gives us our first glimpse of how L.A. Noire’s animations, writing, design, and attention to detail combine to form a gripping gameplay experience.

After inviting him in, a clearly concerned Mrs. White shows Phelps to the living room. Phelps informs her that her husband appears to be missing, and that foul play is suspected. In her reaction, we see the real power of Team Bondi’s digital filming process. “I knew something was wrong when he didn’t come home!” she exclaims, furrowing her brow and darting her eyes in panic. It’s real fear we see in her face – a truly human performance by a human actress. Compared to this, even the best game animation seems plastic and stilted.

the animations are really excellent, the visuals do give it a somewhat uncanny edge. However, strides have been made

It's disappointing that people can't just enjoy what has been done amazingly well, but instead need to focus on what "needs" to be done better.

when one element looks amazing tho, you expect everything else to, otherwise whats the point? the eyes do seem lifeless, but then i'm yet to see a CGi character that has lifelike eyes in games or even movies. they all look like souless shells, just like in heavy rain. if the eyes had "soul" it would make them all the more impressive.

i do think the environments and character models need work the most tho. it looks weird atm, kinda how pez-q describes it. awesome faces stuck super-imposed onto low quality bodies. it's a jarring difference atm. but there is no doubt that the facial animations look great. it's just sad to see there is such a huge jump in quality between that and everything else.

Eyes are gateways to the soul. Corny as it sounds it's THE most important part of making characters feel alive. No amount of surrounding animation can make up for that.
