I mean if the fans (not even professional game developers) are coming up with these examples of how a modern Sonic game should look, then it really makes a guy feel like SEGA is giving us the shit end of the stick - like they really do not believe in Sonic as a 2D franchise, and are only making Sonic 4 to prove that point.
And when you realize that in order to get the complete Sonic 4, you are going to have to purchase four parts released across who knows how many months (SEGA has not said anything official), all for $15 each. All total, that is a $60 game, and let's be honest, Sonic 4 looks like a lot of old school fun, but in no way does it look anywhere near the graphic quality one expects from a full-priced, $60 game. There is simply no way the development budget for Sonic 4, puts it anywhere near where the asking of more than $30 for the total package (all four parts), is a fair asking price. I played the demo this morning, and I am thinking that if anything, each part should have been priced at $10 each; that would have been closer to a fair asking price than $60.
It's almost like SEGA does not want this game to succeed - releasing an overpriced, graphically crippled game, just so old school gamers like me will shut up asking them to stop making crummy 3D Sonic games.
If Sonic 4 had looked like either of the two fan videos, I could happily see spending $60 for the entire package - hell, I'd even demand they put it on a disc, so I could buy it all at once. But in it's current condition, SEGA really should be ashamed to ask a dime over $30 for this.
