PS3

Namco-Bandai published this new trailer of Noby Noby Boy on the Japanese PSN, captured by DjMizuhara. The Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi is behind it and the game is released tomorrow on the PSN, for as little as €4.

I bet these videos are not real gameplay, they are done this way to confuse us all. Everyone watching this videos must think "WTF is going on? This is crazy" and everyone will download just to find out what its all about. And I believe this will be as brilliant as katamari. Love or hate thing, but brilliant, for sure.

The part I liked most was the scrotum-chin-guy riding his squared-wheel-carrot-tricycle.

The rest was a bit too off...

Unfortunately, I have to agree. I've been following this game for a while, and I just don't see the appeal. Sure, it's crazy, but so is my grandma. If this game gets a bunch of good review scores, either there's something very special burried very deep beneath the surface or most game reviewers are indeed pathetic sheep. I might have liked Katamari, but that doesn't mean I have to pretend to like this just because it's designed by the same person.

I'm gonna go ahead and say this is one of those games that is best enjoyed when high. I tried playing Katamiri sober and it wasn't fun at all. But then I rolled up, grabbed some Cheetos, and had a decent time with it.

i wasn't a huge katamari fan, i guess it was a bit too esoteric for me, and nobynobyboy seems to be following in the same vein.

I think novelty is a great tool for selling stuff with the market we have today, with downloadable titles. People dare to spend their buck on something crazy cause it's cheapr and they don't have to go out of their way to get it, jsut download it straitght form the ether and there you go. This is however bound to produce some nonsensical and basically pointless titles, like flow and flower(?) and perhaps this. I don't really have any clear idea of how noby noby boy plays, even after this trailer and that's kind of what worries me :P

No, that's not at all what I said, read my post again. I'm allowing for a possibility that the game is genuinely good, but it's not obvious from the videos.

I don't think there's a demo, is there? So the only way to check it out would be to buy it.

No, what would potentially make them pathetic sheep would be coming up with excuses for praising the game just because it's made by "those wacky Japanese!" Reading the Eurogamer review doesn't help much. It confirms there's not much game to it (no goals and no structure, for starters), but it's crazy and has a neat community aspect - 9/10.

And that's precisely what I'm talking about. When a Western developer (say, Rare) develops a game with a clear focus on sandbox gameplay, plenty of wackiness, strong community aspect and a low price (oh, say, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts), it's a disappointment. When that cool cat Takahashi does pretty much the same thing, it's brilliant. I really despise those double standards.

except they're nothing alike. nuts and bolts still kept to traditional "game" conventions, you had goals, you had objectives...the only "wacky" thing about nuts and bolts was it's art. thats it.

this however, is almost an "anti-game" and thats why it is being praised, in much the same way flower or flow are "anti-games" they remove modern game conventions and opt for playing for playing's sake, not because the game tells you to.

I said the focus was on sandbox gameplay, not that it had no objectives at all (by the way, isn't it even better if a game caters to both approaches, the sandbox and the structured one?). Plenty of people who decided to give it a fair shot spent a lot of time just playing around with their own inventions, not necessarily pursuing the challenges. As far as wackiness goes, most of it was in players' creations, but Nuts & Bolts was just a single example I used, anyway.

Oh, I'm all for experimentation and it should certainly be encouraged, but it should be rewarded only if the end result is not only different, but good. Experimentation and craziness for craziness' sake is not something I can get behind. If you give a game a score of 9/10, it better be because the game is truly brilliant and not just because it's an unusual and charming diversion. There are thousands of "different" games out there, especially in the PC indie space, but only a small percentage of those are any good. Noby Noby Boy might or might not be one of them, I can't make up my mind yet.

maybe you should be worry more about people who spend 15xmore on some madden
