The original is one of my favorite games and although not considered a classic, I did enjoy many great hours in multiplayer of that game.
The first game also reminded me of Total Recall a lot and I absolutely loved the destructible environments and the claustrophobic caves of some of the levels.
This game doesn't look bad at all though it looks a bit more generic compared to what the original offered.
The multiplayer beta was a lot of fun and I can't wait to see how the larger maps work with the physics.
I also don't understand why they made the decission to change from FPS to TPS. I know they want the player to be able to see all the destruction as best as possible, but that doesn't make a good game.
I still haven't seen anything from this game, in terms of gameplay, that makes me want to buy this game.
Personally, I am very happy with the change. I loved Red Faction the way it was, and I love shooters. But at the same time, thanks to the popularity of Halo, Gears, Call of Duty and Rainbow Six, shooters have become a dime a dozen. And shooters in space, have become cliched. The games are short (usually around 10 hours) and they offer limited gameplay. Again, not knocking shooters, just that by taking the Red Faction franchise out of shooter territory and into open world genre, Volition opens up the franchise to more varied gameplay, a much longer game, and potentially a deeper storyline . . . and they still managed to create a next-gen version of Geomods in the process. And Geomods really made the original Red Faction an awesome game.
The other good thing, is by not going with a shooter (again), they have finally given the series the edge it needs to become a breakout franchise; "GTA in space". No one has done it yet, and if the final game turns out to be good, then it will have differentiated itself enough to to stand out. On the other hand, if it stuck to the series roots and was just another shooter, then it risks getting buried in a crowded genre, where unless you are a top tier marketed product (ala Halo, Gears, Killzone, Call of Duty, Tom Clancy, etc.), most gamers simply just ignore you exist.
The multiplayer beta as nice, and that was almost six months ago. This game is not due out until at least the summer. It was already good, so with the amount of extra development time, I think this game is going to be stunning when it finally releases.
PS - True. The trailer does little to actually sell this game. I think the series of developer diaries has done more to sell this game than the various trailers they have released. Volition/THQ are going to really have to step up the marketing on this one in the final month before release, if they really want people to take notice.
Explosions looked rather poor aswell.
(it didnt help that I just watched the Killzone2 trailer).
Textures and Plasma distortion looked great though
I think this game looks lame as hell.
remember playing the first RF... eeeh old good times.
I think this game looks lame as hell.
Anyway, I can't wait for this game. If anyone has watched the videos on the destruction, nothing like this has ever even been attempted in a game. Sure games like Black, Mercs 2, and Battlefield Bad Company had destruction, but it was just pre-determined crap where the engine just switched an intact model with a destroyed one. This game actually simulates physics of every part of every building. Even without the storyline, I could probably put hours into this game just ramming vehicles into buildings and setting off explosions trying to bring them down. I guess its just the inner pyro in me.
What I'm looking for is diversion, and unique/imaginative locations. I just think it's always such a waste where devs are making a SCI-FI game, and can basicly do whatever they want, and all they can come up with is boring/generic crap as shown in this vid.
I sure hope you are correct in that the game will have some varied locations, and more importantly...INTERESTING locations. If so, It'll definitely boost my interest. But so far, it's looking pretty dull tbh.
but this is something that comes with going the "open area/world" route. instead of a linear level that has been planned out and offeres variety in locals etc. this is one huge samey area with some repeate buldings thrown around seemingly at random. tech wise it's great, and the design of each structure is interesting enough, but it just seems to lack thought with the way they're placed and the undetailed, and uninteresting base environment.
we'll see. hopefully it's good, but imo, the series hasnt exactly been going from strength to strength. red faction was awesome. had a very 'half life' feel about it, and it was well done, red faction 2 limited your destructive abilities and it just wasnt as involved or as fun. basically turned into a really bog standard run and gun.
but hopefully this 3rd game will be more like the first.
- a man tries to escape unknown past
- finds somewhere new to forget and start over
- oh no, he's caught up in an oppressed state of affairs
- reluctant.. he joins the fight to take on 'evil'
mediocrity ensues....
well this looks kinda nice hope it will do some justice
I also don't understand why they made the decission to change from FPS to TPS. I know they want the player to be able to see all the destruction as best as possible, but that doesn't make a good game.

And it being FPS DOES make is a good game? I don't think it really matters, its an intelligent decision.
I personally am really excited about this game. YES, it is pretty much based on tech, thats very true, but for me thats great. And the gameplay looks good, and yeah. And the story while it looks like a typical actino film, as long as its well presented thats not too bad.
