Xbox 360

Idea Factory finally released a video showing some gameplay of their game Spectral Force 3. Yet another proof that the small japanese development teams have a hard time getting up to speed with next-gen development.

when you look back at the other versions, it's not much of a surprise. i think this is the first one that's entirely in 3d. the others i believe still used 2d sprites and several were PS2 games.

graphically it's no where even close to amazing, but at least the characters don't look like oiled up barbie dolls, so i guess that's a plus. it does look as if it could be fun, if you're into the whole tactical RPG thing.

If it plays anything like Final Fantasy Tactics then I'd pick this game up for sure. FFT is one of my all time favorite games and I have yet to find another RPG like it.

Nope it doesn't they're struggling to lock things down at 30fps as they are using a whole host of visual effects such as motion blur, softshadowing on everything in the game, HDR lighting, normal mapping, parallax mapping, ray tracing, the same lighting technique used in halo 3, real-time physical calculations and a very stressful gpu run particle system. This game is also VERY shader heavy and has a revolutionary animation system the likes of which has never before been witnessed in gaming Square Enix better watch out cause these guys are coming. The title will also utilize all 3 360 cores to to their full potential and the graphics engine has more going on than even Crytek 2.

Yeah, your right it does look a bit like Shining Force, a prettier version of it anyway. I'll get this if someone brings this game to the UK.

Jap rpgs have never been about graphics. There about 70 hour long stories, thats where they get thier impact. Dont get me wrong i hope blue dragon and lost oddysey look amazing. But if they dont and have a great story it would be enough for me to purchase em. I played ff7 the other month, graphics look horrible but the story gets me everytime lol.

BlimBlim are you a graphic whore or just stupid? I'm really tired of your slander. The gameplay looks solid in this one and that's all I care about. This series has always been about cute anime style and if they had changed it, it wouldn't be Spectral Force anymore. Games like this offer dozens of hours of gameplay and that's why they are more next-gen than those 8 hour shooters ever will be.

(This is not any specific previous post)

Why are people still calling games "next-gen"?

That was fine before Zero Hour. Now the 360 is actually here, which makes it current-gen. If anything, the Japanese developers are having difficulties getting up to speed with current-gen. If you want to talk about next-gen type games, you're talking about stuff that will be running on upcoming PC architecture, and MAYBE the PS3, but I doubt it, since Sony is notorious for their crappy hardware and boosting specs on paper.

Kai_Ozu is correct, as well. Not every game is going to look like Gears of War. And let us not forget that Gears of War, despite what you may see in pre-rendered (as in pre-recorded, not cgi) trailers, is still plagued by frame rate drops. They say they have it running at 30 fps, which in my opinion, shouldn't even be considered current gen.

If you over-estimate the 360's power, you're going to be disappointed. Not to say it's not incredibly powerful, but some people tend to mistake the 360 for some kind of NASA supercomputer.

If you relax about the current-gen/next-gen crap, and just appreciate a game for it's overall aesthetic quality and gameplay, then you'll be a lot more pleased by the games and the console itself.

hmmm the 360 is very powerful. If you consider that the old xbox could run half life 2 at a pretty decent framerate. Than imagine what the 360 can do. The xenos is a dx9/dx10 hybrid with support for geomtry shaders. The 360 imo is capable of better graphics than the ps3. But the ps3 is capable of more advanced physics. The ps3 cpu is amazingly fast if you can optimize for it, but the xenos is far better than rsx. Gears will run at 60fps on release. The demo for e3 was compiled in like 11 days for e3 , it was hardly a representation of a finished product.

If I had to pick between an ATI and an NVidia, and I've owned both, I'd pick an NVidia. ATI build quality is just nowhere near NVidia.

Secondly, I highly doubt it will run at 60fps on release. I played it at Zero Hour and if they want it to run at 60fps, they've got another years worth of work to do.

Half Life 2 ran alright on the old XBox, but it was also dumbed down in terms of graphic quality. The resolution was much much lower than what most PC's run at, and the effects and textures were turned down for optimal performance.

Well concidering the style of games Idea Factory is known for i'm surprised by the graphics. Yeah they aren't Gears of Wars quality but these games don't rely on the graphics anyways. This game seems like an instant buy for me. Its a shame most people can't look past graphics these days.

well ive owned both, I own a 6600gt at the moment because it offers the best performance for the best price. Nvidia and ATi are going two different ways. Ati are going for edram, unified shaders, basically thier next desktop card is the xenos. Nvidia are like we dont need all that crap where going for raw power. So your going to see two very different desktop high end cards on the market in 2007. Personally I like what ati are doing. Its sort of like sony vs MS. Sony dont want to do things new so they go for raw power. MS want to try something new so they go for a solid archetecture and a new type of graphics card. The winner in the market always shifts, I can see ati winning next year tbh.

This game was supposed to be released 29/6/06, but I can't find out if it's region free, looking at the menu it's all in Japanese so it would also be nice to know if there is any English text in there.

The way I see it, in Japan people seem to have a dislike to the Xbox 360, so it would make sense for them to make it region free, so the rest of the world can have a look at the game and to help it's sales...right....?

Some people never get it.
A lot of us here who loves 2d games, who can play SNES or even NES games today, heck i even replay some of my PS1 games,in fact im gonna replay chrono cross and Trigger before BD is out.

The thing is,look at what kind of power 360 is,you could basically make a cartoonish game like with BD,i do get that small japanese dev cant dev something as beautiful, however they should atleast be able to make better "eye candy" then this, look at the characters they look like they are from some PS1 game.

These dev need to unlock atleast some of the power of 360,or else why not dev for the xbox?

More XBOX is out then 360's i fail to see this game getting much of sales when 360 has much lesser installbase to this date then xbox, and then delivering ps1 graphic.

And before someone writes, but its good that xbox360 get support, well,i fail to see anyone buy this rpg over all other kind of small rpg's coming to ps2 all the time.
