SEGA Announces Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown for Xbox LIVE and PlayStation®Network
Definitive Version of Blockbuster Fighting Title Arriving on Consoles in Summer 2012

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON - August 23, 2011

SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA® of Europe Ltd. today announced that Virtua Fighter™ 5, the latest title in its celebrated fighting franchise, will see a grand update and expansion released as a standalone title for both Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®Network. The new game, entitled Virtua Fighter™ 5 Final Showdown™, will contain a full overhaul of Virtua Fighter 5’s mechanics, balance and animations, along with new game modes, new dynamic fighting arenas, a massive collection of customizable character items and new characters added to the roster. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown is expected to be available in summer 2012.

“Virtua Fighter 5 has always been an authentic arcade fighter, even when played from the comfort of a home console. And, like any proper arcade dynasty, we have continued to support, expand and tweak the game in the years since its release,” said Haruki Satomi, Vice President of Digital Business at SEGA of America. “With Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, we get to bring the ultimate expression of competitive one-on-one gaming to console players in one perfect package.”

Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown contains the definitive version of Virtua Fighter 5, refined over the years since its original arcade debut. The new release also adds an extensive list of features never before seen on consoles. Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown will include:

The Perfect Fighting Experience: Virtua Fighter 5’s signature style of hand-to-hand combat, with revised mechanics, balance, timing and more, along with simplified controls for new players while retaining the depth that veterans demand
Dynamic and Interactive Arenas: Fighting areas in new shapes and sizes, including arenas with fences and walls that are different for every round – take unexpected advantage of fighters’ new wall-based moves, or break through the fences with special attacks
A Mode for Every Fight: Dominate the leaderboards with Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown’s extremely responsive one-on-one online battle system, widely praised for having little latency, or take on an army of opponents yourself in a new single-player mode
Customized Combatants: Enter the ring with one of 19 playable characters, including fan favorite Taka-Arashi from Virtua Fighter 3 and an all-new character, Jean Kujo, and customize them with unique costume and character items

i think its great that it's gonna be an actual arcade game this time..probably do alot better for the fact. I just hope they dont mess it all up by giving it a high price point.

Good MK news too.. the trilogys gonna be hitting xbla and psn for 800/£6.99 - very tempted with that. Not sure if they're HD remakes though

People still play these fighting game rehashes? I'll rejoice at the announcement (which may never happen) of something new and fresh for a change..

What sucks is that this is a "digital download only" this is bullcrap they better have a blu ray disc retail version of this game or else sega.

You know whats sad, I mean really sad about this game, the very first Virtua Fighter 5 was made on Sega's Lindberg arcade hardware which is nothing more than a custom PC with a 3Ghz Pentium 4, gobs of ram and an Nvidia 6800GT, yes... Shader Model 3 but the GPU is clocked at 350Mhz meanwhile the PS3 and Xbox360 both have shader model 3 compliant GPUs but are clocked at 500Mhz with GPUs that are more than capable on further enhancing this game, just slightly.
Instead we get a "straight arcade" port that in and of itself is not bad but you have do buy it as a digital download, omg they better make a Blu Ray disc version I don't want to be logging on to PSN just to play a game I paid for.

...FUCK YEAH!!!

I really thought they'd never release this and then, just like that...BAM, one of the best fighters lives on!

Also, Mr. Whiny, you don't have to be online to play a downloaded game on either PS3 or 360. Problem solved. Besides, i'd rather it be a digital download so that Sega don't have to bother printing it and what not. Whatever makes this VERY niche game be more successful is super-awesome in my book.

1. I think that's just for the trailer.

2. Be happy that they are doing anything at all. I was 100% certain that we wouldn't be getting any more VF at all.

Yup. Hard to complain when the franchise is all but dead. And it's not really Sega's fault. A game like Soul Calibur is too complicated for most folks to bother learning. Virtua Fighter never had a chance.

Hope they take the awesome tutorial system back from VF4 EVO. VF4 will forever be remembered as one of the greatest fighters ever for me, because it's the only one that ever taught you how to play :P

Yea it was brilliant. I'll never understand why they scaled it back in VF5, or why everyone else hasn't copied like.. every great idea from that game. There are quite a few of them :)

Yeah, i never understood why the fighting genre has to be so freakishly cryptic. There's no way of getting decent in any of the games wihout either relentles dedication, spending hours upon hours breaking down moves and discovering the system, or going online to get the goods from other people who did the former for you. I mean, people think the Chllenge mode in SFIV is great, but compared to VF4 EVO? It's not even the bare minimum. It's just "here's how to do some combos, enjoy" What about canceling, linking, crossovers, punishing game, frame data, gague management and so forth? Nah, players don't need to know that stuff, right? :P

Anyway, super stoked for this. Just wished it wouldn't take another year for it to hit :\

How can anyone say that this franchise is dead? This game has been on arcades for years now, and most people I know, that live in Japan, are still playing it. Of course, if you mean the consoles, then yeah, it's pretty much dead since the Xbox release.
