GSY Review Wii U

Ever since the first episode was released back in 2001, the Fatal Frame series has been known as one of the spookiest survival horror games out there. We were then pretty eager to discover Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, a new exclusive on Wii U. As usual, you'll find the translated verdict and +/- section inside, along with 6 direct feed videos. For the full review, head over to the French side.

Verdict

Although it is obviously less known than the likes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, Fatal Frame is still a reference of the survival horror genre despite some shortcomings in the controls. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water is faithful to the series' roots so it certainly won't appeal to everyone but it will definitely satisfy those looking for a good scare. The main story may not be that incredible but it is interesting enough to make this new episode worth playing. Let us not forget that the Japanese horror genre is pretty unique and that the games which pay tribute to it are now pretty scarce. One more reason to give Maiden of Black Water a try if you own a Wii U.
  • On the plus side
  • Excellent atmosphere
  • Visually and psychologically scary and disturbing
  • Top sound design
  • Old school gameplay is charming...

On the down side

- ... but it will also feel dated to some
- Technically pretty average
- The first encounters can be tough

Fatal Frame is one of the scariest and best horror series ever made. Too bad it is for the WiiU as I'll never play it unless it comes out on another platform like the first 3 did.
