GSY Review Wii U

Remakes have become pretty trendy lately and it's not to everyone's liking to say the least. However, when things are as nicely done as in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, one can't help but feel that they're not always a bad thing. Nintendo sent us a review code for the game and we could capture a few - very short - videos so you can see the game in action. We also took the liberty of adding our opinion about it in case you were wondering if you should pick it up when it's released.
Update: First 10 minutes added.

Verdict

Let's not beat about the bush: unless you hate the Zelda games in general or you've played The Wind Waker a zillion times you can't take one more playthrough, this remake of one of the best GameCube games is clearly worth your while if you own a Wii U. This new version of the first cel shaded Zelda title is not a basic port of the original, as there have been noticeable improvements in different areas such as graphics and gameplay. The boat has now become faster, which makes traveling easier and a lot less tedious than before, pulling up underwater treasures is also much quicker now, and Nintendo even added a new heroic mode to offer more challenge to those who may have already completed the original game. The gamepad is used for the hero's inventory and the different maps, but you can also use it to aim in first person view with the grappling hook or the boomerang. Of course, you can also play the whole game in your bed on the gamepad. Although we would have loved to see an entirely new Zelda game on Wii U instead of a remake, The Wind Waker HD is a nice present for Wii U owners, especially those who have never had the chance to play the game.

It's 30 fps at any resolution. So 1080p30, 720p30...

Still the best Zelda in the last decade and deserves this upgrade, will grab it down the road when/ if I also grab a Wii U...

Proof of how well solid game design holds up over time.

Could not agree more. As much as I love darksiders and other similar games (shame there is not more) the Zelda series and this game are so outstanding in terms of design and execution. This is certainly one genre in which Nintendo is still very much the king.

Gorgeous gorgeous game that was short on dungeons and incredibly easy. They have at least included a harder mode this time. Very sad when I finally finished this as it's the most amazing world to be in. It would have benefited more interaction as well like the first main island pointed towards - in this sense it pointed to something better than it turned out to be. It could have been so easily the best in the series had it had more content and an increased difficulty. As it stands though it's still a lovely game albeit one that can definitely disappoint

Actually I don't think any Zelda game can ever top LTTP. Majoras's Mask comes close mind

see.. if they had offered this for free besides a new Zelda, like they did with this and ocarina of time on the gamecube, I very likely would have picked up a wii-u for it. Sadly it looks like theres gonna be at least another year before we get a new Zelda..by which time i'll be having too many of my pennies stolen by the ps4/xo to do something crazy and splash out on a wii-u

This does look pretty though, but then so does the original still

Best in the last decade? Skyward and Twilight are both superior

Wind Waker is too easy. The visuals are great, but the challenge of it are as child like as its cartoon style.

I'd agree with skyward. But twilight was complete crap imo. This is the one zelda game that sticks in my mind, more so then the others. But not enough to buy a console with such a short, limited lifespan.

Twilight was complete crap? Wow tell that to gamerankings. I can see if you didn't like the game but calling a game of that caliber complete crap? Wow...

it was a Wii launch title, which is the only reason i see it being rated so highly. case in point, see perfect dark zero. same thing happened to that, and that too was complete crap...

OR....just maybe it was rated so highly b/c a lot of ppl thought it was a truly great game (and perfect dark zero is a horrible comparison btw, not nearly a 94% on average). It's one thing to say you didn't like it as much but you are saying it is complete crap and that others are wrong in thinking it is a AAA game? If not you really need to work on your choice of words. I don't like the MGS games much at all but at least I have the ability to understand why others might enjoy them so much.

i don't see how PDZ is a horrible example. it's the same fucking thing but it doesnt help your argument so you're ignoring it. the game was shit when it came out, the game is shit now. it got good reviews becasue it was a launch title, same goes for twilight princess. and if you're too moronic to understand that any of what i've said is anything but an opinion...then here. "IMO". satisfied?

Lol well obviously it's nothing more than your opinion (one that most would find hilarious) i am talking about the WAY you express your opinion, why is that so hard for you to understand?
There is a huge difference between saying "I didn't like a game" or "I'm surprised people like it so much" and saying a game is "shit" and only got good reviews b/c of when it released.
So no, I don't expect you to type "IMO" at the end of all of your ridiculous opinions, but if you are going to word things the way you do then don't get so up tight when you get called out on saying something in such a dismissive manner. It's simple logic.
Edit: plus it got even better reviews on GameCube where it was not a launch title. That goes against your logic as well.

The game is pretty old by now and it's remake is also getting great reviews so your logic already falls apart on that alone lol.

Twilight princess has a remake that is getting great reviews which makes my logic fall apart? When did that remake happen?

I'm getting uptight? Bit rich coming from the guy who can't even fathom an opinion without a god damn disclaimer at the end of every fucking post. Don't like the way i type? There is a pretty little ignore button to your left. I suggest clicking it.

Makes it seem like you don't have a fucking clue what your talking about either. I assume you're talking about wind waker here, seeing as it's the only zelda with a remake. A game i said i like...so what relevance that has in regards to twilight princess , a game that is shit, and my "logic" i don't fucking know.

Again. Ignore button, use it...Please.

It was actually a GC game ported to Wii. And it's a tad unfair and out of context to compare it to something like PDZ. TP was a brilliant game. A little too close to OoT, but still brilliant.

Pretty much, yes. Majora's Mask is a masterpiece. Simple as that. OoT get's all the plaudits, but MM, for me, was a better game. Darker, more emotional, better designed. It was fantastic.

That was simply a mistake, hence why I edited it from my post before you replied (no idea why it still showed for ppl other than me). But it still stands twilight princess wasn't a launch title for GameCube (it's original platform) and yet still scored amazingly well. But enough of this boring debate, obviously going nowhere.

Majoras's Mask is a one of a kind brilliance we probably wont see again from a Zelda game. I thought TP was disappointingly linear in lots of ways and way too easy but it certainly was gorgeous. Midna is a brilliant character and the whole wolf thing is excellent though. I'd pretty much given up on the series after WW and TP though and stopped playing Skyward Sword fairly early into it. SS is however much better than I first thought and I'm finally now enjoying it
