They prerendered it so they could make it so cinematic, but it uses ingame models and assets, i.e. it will look THAT GOOD, if not that smooth and perfectly animated.

The halowars.com site says it's completely pre-rendered. This takes place before Halo 1. And it's exclusive to 360 only, so the controls are being handled from ground up. LOTR had great controls but that was a port, this isn't which means it will be even better!
Too bad Halogen got shut down but I understand it's Bungie's IP.

Ok, this is interesting. With respect to the Peter Jackson, Microsoft partnership... xbox.com had this to write...
Posted by xboxcom
First of all Bungie Studios and Peter Jackson have teamed up to work on new episodic downloadable content for Halo... Sorry, let’s run that one by you again – Bungie Studios – the creators of the mighty Halo franchise – and Peter “Mister Lord of the Rings” Jackson are collaborating on totally new content episodes for Halo! This is almost too much to comprehend – an awesome partnership and the promise of plentiful downloadable Halo happiness to come, and that’s aside from Halo 3! The additional announcement that Peter Jackson has now set up his own game development studios – Wingnut Interactive – seems very minor in comparison. Which, of course, it isn’t…

Q: Will I be able to play Halo Wars on Xbox 360 and PC?
A: Halo Wars is for the Xbox 360 exclusively.

Q: Is the trailer pre-rendered?
A: Yes, and it's based around our world concepts and uses lots of in-game models. The sound and music were done at Ensemble Studios as well. Props to our friends at Blur for bringing it all together and making it really shine.

ingame models :D

Q: Other RTS games that have transitioned to console have had issues with controls, how will “Halo Wars” improve on the formula?
A: “Halo Wars” was created for the Xbox 360 from the ground up, which meant we didn't have to make compromises or shoe-horn in artifacts from a Windows PC game. We were able to take all the best aspects of RTS games, make them work perfectly on the Xbox 360, and exclude the rest.

I think that the artwork is very reminiscent of the early starwars artwork. Cleverly deliberate to tap into the romance we have with that universe… Looks great, will watch this development with great interest.
