Today some new ratings from the newest edition of the famous Japanese gamesmagazine Famitsu. Most remarkable is the review of Prey, that has been in stores for some time in U.S. and Europe now, but is new in Japan.

The game achieves high scores, with three times a eight and even one nine, having a total score of 33/40. (Famitsu always reviews with 4 different people) Do you still understand the people over there?

The full list with all rates:

Pokemon Battle Revolution (Wii, Nintendo): 9 / 9 / 8 / 9 - (35/40)

Armored Core 4 (PS3, From Software): 9 / 7 / 7 / 8 - (31/40)

HimeHibi: Princess Days (PS2, Takuyo): 7 / 6 / 6 / 7 - (26/40)
Yumemishi (PS2, Princess Soft): 7 / 8 / 7 / 7 - (29/40)
Formula One Championship (PS2, Sony): 8 / 8 / 7 / 8 - (31/40)
Simple 2000 Series Vol. 112: The Tousou Highway 2: Road Warrior 2050 (PS2, D3): 6 / 6 / 5 / 6 - (23/40)

Prey (Xbox 360, Spike): 9 / 8 / 8 / 8 - (33/40)

Formula One 2006 Portable (PSP, Sony): 7 / 7 / 7 / 7 - (28/40)
Gamics Vol. 1: Yokoyama Mitsuteru San Goku Shi: Dai 1 Kan - Touen no Chikai (NDS, ASNetworks): 8 / 7 / 5 / 7 - (27/40)

Prey better then Armored Core for the PS3? Almost every 360 game lately gets higher score then PS3 games and they still don't buy the damn console? To answer your question dcdelgado: Nope

Read this webpage if you want to see what japan is really all about. Its a guy from the US in a teaching program writing about his expierences in japan, it is quite funny and disturbing, especially thier education system.

Um yes it would be called getting an average.

And is probably better than having just one persons opinion.

After reading some of the body text, Famitsu's group reviews are no better (and sometimes much worse) than EGM's--and they're both relatively terrible when compared to a good review. I'd rather take on persons opinion, if it's free of bias and well written. I give 1up shit for writing three paragraph reviews, but it's better than the crap their parent publication does.

What good is taking an average of an arbitrary number anyway, especially when the source winds up being four very poorly written reviews.

Well that's something different, i don't see a problem with having 4 people review a product as i feel i would get a better idea of what people (in this case Japanese people) think.

Just as well 1up don't write much as when people start to write loads they tend to become more bias.

Bias is something that everyone has in some way or another, and seeing as Famitsu are writing with the Japanese gaming comunity in mind i don't think it is for us to complain about what kind of games they like in general.

What amuses me is certain people here seem to find any excuse to dis Japanese people and i find that a bit sad.
both relatively terrible when compared to a good review
I also think this is down to personal opinion, as you may read a review which you agree with, I may read the same review and i may disagree totally with it.

Everything is subjective.

Dissing Famitsu is not dissing the Japanese people. It's just speaking the truth about a crappy videogame magazine :)

I don't personally believe that Famitsu is any more an indication of what the Japanese people are thinking than EGM is an indication of what I'm thinking...

And some things are not subjective..I mean just read the text to their reviews. A little blurb that tells basically nothing about the product they are "reviewing" is not a very good way to go about finding out more about a title/product/whatever it is they're trying to score..they might as well just answer it like a yes or no question, "Is this game good?"

yes/no/no/yes ;)

What good is a score without a reasonable opinion to back it up? Good for arguing about on message boards and that's about it.

Is this dissing Famitsu ?

Well seeing as Famitsu review the kind of games i like i am always happy to hear what they have to say.

Doesn't mean i have to agree with it, nor does it have an impact on what i think.

I don't see why people have such a problem with Famitsu, as i said it's not writen with westerners in mind.

That's not my beef with Famitsu, there's no issue taken with potentially different taste. I have a problem with the fact that their reviews are usually more of a joke than anything else. The magazine could be written in any language on any shore and it would still suck, it's certainly no Edge/Next Generation. Famitsu is good for scans of foreign scoops we wouldn't get here--but the content outside of imagery--the editorial content, is pretty piss poor in my opinion.

As for the more ignorant comments in this thread, well, I'll keep an eye on that. Everyone knows the best Japanese blog targeted towards a western audience is MasaMania.com though--it's moral entertainment :)

Didn't realise you could read Japanese.

What an absurd thing to say though, many things in Japanese are hard to translate to english without losing some meaning.

Also you you are relying on the translator/translation to convey what is actually being said.

So i really don't think you can comment on the quality of the text in an article.

Japanese are a culture who enjoy humour (watch their TV programs and ridiculous Game shows) so it wouldn't surprise me if publications used such humour in their magazines.

Not ever magazine is up their asses like Edge are .. :)

Translations will do just fine, you can tell if something has very little valid information about a product based on a crappy auto-translation, even..and when you have someone who DOES know the language around, it's not that difficult to get a quality translation out of them. They can translate novels, but not reviews?

I know things get lost in translation, but what's not there at all can't be lost.

On the contrary though, your Japanese comprehension must be so high that you're catching all of these great reviews that go over my silly western head.

I was listening to a gaming podcast not to long ago (don't remember which one, probably one from 1UP) where they had an American guy in the show that lived and worked in Japan.. And he said that Japanese gamers are so used to only playing Japanese games that they don't really know any Western games.. Only Western game they kindof know is the NFS-underground series from EA strangly enough (guess they like the tuner-scene).. That's probably also why the Xbox 360 just doesn't sell overthere.. Gamers overthere don't talk about games like Gears of War etc, most of them probably don't even know it exists, and if they do they know it's Western so they kindof automaticly ignore it..

I think it will take a very long time for Western games (or a Western console) to succeed in Japan, if ever.. There are just so many Japanse gamedevelopers that know much better how to make games the Japanese like, or better said are used to like..
