I especially liked the lighting in the fog. That is awesome. I am really liking the effort put into scale in these new releases. Not too long ago Assassin's creed blew our minds, now with RDR and this here, it's growing by leaps and bounds. It is incredible how much these devs are pulling out of 5 year old hardware!

This may sound stupid, but I still don't really get what this game.. actually.. is.

Like.. what are we supposed to actually look forward to, playing this? None of the trailers seem to emphasise the meat of it at all, what will actually make up the experience.

The story synopsis sounds like In The Mouth of Madness, so that's not terribly unique or enticing, and then they've kinda showed how he's running around a bit with a flashlight and gets things flung at him.

If shooting is all you do, I'm surprised there hasn't been any attempt to convey what's actually rewarding and unique about that. The light tagging sounds like it could give it a nice, methodical rythm, but I dunno if I should trust that it's a substantial action game and expect it to play great? I could be way more excited about this game if I just knew what it's actually trying to be.

Well, here's what we are getting out of this one, at least to me.

We are getting what is expected to be an amazingly well told, non run of the mill story, with interesting characters in a fantastic setting that is not always very highly represented in games. The game is just dripping with impressive atmosphere and authencity, there's a mystery that I'm personally interested in seeing solved to some strong degree. This would be a movie I'd be greatly interested in going to the theatres to see, or a television series I'd watch regularly.

We are getting a game that will live or die by its story, but it's also a game that doesn't slouch in the action department, either. It isn't just your simple shoot, then shoot some more action, which I like. There's a strong emphasis on the use of light and I really how it's incorporated into the game play. Off the top of my head, I can come up with a number of amazingly interesting ways to take advantage of just the 'light gets rid of or weakness the darkness' mechanic they got going on. There's surprisingly more potential for this than many realize, and I think Remedy will do a good job of exploiting this for all its worth.

What I also love about this game and its setting, is that Remedy seems to really feel a need to make a lot of things feel more substantial than they might have otherwise felt had they not taken certain steps. This really does appear to come across in their overall presentation, especially the way in which they start a new episode with the 'previously on Alan Wake' thing they got going on. It's a game that doesn't just take place in the dark, but also in the day time. I'm just dying to see what a possible morning after the crazy ass things that take place at night would be like in this town. They are treating it like a television series, a good one at that, and that's good because any good television series needs strong characters. This then means that there's a very strong possibility that this game may utilize the various cast and characters to a degree that we probably haven't seen very many times this generation. They may not simply just end up being the necessary distractions for the hero, they may be something far more substantial, something we can really get attached to, or be concerned about.

Then there's the fact that our main character is no boy scout. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that he's this badass. I've seen some previews classify him, based on the first episode, as a complete dick of a person, and I tend to agree. He comes off very much like an ass and an all around flawed individual. To some degree, while you are attempting to beat, experience, or solve this mystery with this character, I suspect you may sometimes get the feeling that he may very well have what's coming to him, or that you might take a bit of pleasure in seeing him suffer a bit, even though you're the one being placed in his shoes. Many games attempt to make the character you're playing with one that you can either look up to, envy, identify with, be in complete awe of, etc. Alan Wake is now just a simple writer who apparently was once some kind of king shit writer that use to get all sorts of attention, and now that he has fallen from grace, or is no longer getting the kind of attention he likes to get from the crowd or class of people he respects or desires that from, compared to, say, the lowly locals of Bright Falls, which he apparently seems to look down on to some degree, he can't seem to handle it. But, whether he likes it or not, it appears he will probably have to end up relying on them.

His marriage is problematic, as Remedy has pointed out many times, probably because of his crappy attitude and anger surrounding his inability to come up with something to write. And then he also appears to treat his wife like utter shit, which I was so happy to have seen someone from the g4tv preview point out, because I agree completely. I'm very much interested in seeing this writer, who has been brought back down to earth and who has come to this small town filled with people who live the kind of life he couldn't begin to understand, hopefully come to rely on and respect those people, and try to work through and solve whatever mysteries that he needs to solve with their help, if only to finally begin to appreciate what he does have and be forced to fix his very flawed character through direct, sometimes frightening experiences.

It's seriously tougher to place this game than most others because it seems like it's going to rely on a kind of storytelling built on different foundations that is basically a far cry from many things we'll probably see on the console. I'm pretty damn excited about this one :)

He doesn't come off like your typical game hero.

1% of your writeup is about THE ACTUAL GAME though, which is my point. I don't care about any of that other stuff unless it's an adventure game with dialogue trees. Story in a game where interaction is on the action game level and every bit of dialogue is pre-determined and automatically is fed to you lives and dies by its core gameplay, not how "troubled" the main character is.

This is the divide between something like Heavy Rain and.. I dunno, Uncharted. Both have stories in them, but only one attempts to feed off of it exclusively, and that game is easily spotted by having simple mechanics that feed into the narrative alone. The other is a strong, satisfying action adventure game.

I really can't get excited about trailers citing "narrative experience!" I can count a handful of games during my 20'ish years out of 27 as a gamer that actually had a great linear narrative. And I don't blame them! They're 10-20-80 hour experiences that CAN'T have the typical three acts of dramaturgy that a movie does, and the only games that commit to their narrative the way a book does were adventure games when they weren't just barrels of laughs.

"Good story" in modern games comes on a moment to moment basis. Heavy Rain's storyline isn't spectacular on the whole, but moments in that game are breathtakingly intense or sometimes genuinely moving. However, that game is *all* about trying to achieve those moments, and is that what Alan Wake is? Clearly not. And before you suggest that it is, realise that I'm comparing it to Heavy Rain. Don't just go off on a tangent explaining how it totally is if you've not played Heavy Rain, please. :P

The way I see it there are two possibilities here. One; Alan Wake is waaaayyyy more of a shooter than they seem willing to let on. That wouldn't be a bad thing I think, if they put the same brains behind the light tagging as they did the bullet time in Max Payne 2 (that survival mode was fantastic) this game could potentially play great and be super addictive. No telling if that's what it's attempting though. The alternative to outright shooter is that it's *completely* hiding a whole adventure game type aspect to it that at least I know nothing of.

In summary, if they weren't so wishy washy about what kind of a videogame this actually is, I could discern whether to be excited.

It's so hard to figure out, because it's so different than a lot of other things.

I'd say it's certainly fair to say it's far more of an action game than Remedy has let on, surely. However, even that description still doesn't properly place this title, in my view.

I saw a video with some pretty heavy duty action, and it was way more fast paced and intense than I expected from this game. However, it wasn't as manageable a situation I would say as what you are use to seeing from a lot of other action games. There's much potential for simply becoming too overwhelmed with a situation, I think, especially when you factor in the battery life on your flashlight diminishing. I suppose how they place tools that you can take advantage as you move through the environments, and how the environments are setup to be played will be the ultimate decider there.

So, basically, I see this being a pretty serious shooter that simply gets its sense of uniqueness from the setting of Bright Falls, the tv series like presentation, the small or perhaps moderate degree of adventure and exploration, the overarching mystery tied to the heavy thriller/horror elements, the light based gameplay mechanics, and finally by way of the main character's narrating of the story and how the manuscript pages add to the evolving plot, since they basically give a heads up of what's to come, but I can certain see things becoming rather interesting in the area of the manuscripts if there is ever a part in the game that requires research on the player's part into perhaps completing or writing their own section of the book, and depending on which words you choose to enter into the book, the game adjusts appropriately?

I don't know, it just looks interesting! :P

The sentence does mean something Simon. It's possible that Remedy may not rely on telling their story in a fashion that is very similar to how many other titles this gen have decided to tell their stories. There are many potential paths they could take this game in. It involves a writer's book that he supposedly can't remember writing coming true before his very eyes, and some mysterious dark presence taking over crap. There are many potential "out there" scenarioes for this game. For one, I still remember a post by an Alan Wake developer stating that there are a couple different versions of Alan Wake's character model, whatever the hell that's suppose to mean :P

He wasn't even saying it in the sense that there were different LODs or higher resolution versions or something like that. He explicitly suggested that he may have spoiled something.

I won't say best looking game ever, since that seems a bit unfair with all that's out there. However, definitely the best looking game on the 360 and the most technically impressive, too, I think. It's also, I believe, fair to say that it's one of the most visually impressive console games ever.

The game definitely has some impressive atmosphere.
