Jiro is so incredibly strong right now thinking of grinding to make him better at monk job just so I can switch back to white magic later while still making him have the strength of a monk class.
That encounter circle really begins to shine later on. I'd like to see the encounter circle in other jrpgs as well. Quite possibly the most underrated aspect of the combat system. It shines on the world map.

I suspect we'll see those Mist Walker enemies in Lost Odyssey just like the Kaleons are in Lost Odyssey.

I'm actually liking it so far. I do have some very valid complaints. The combat is very well balanced, but the story telling is awful. Very basic observations, minute details and simple story elements are stretched very far during cutscenes.
I would not group this game with the likes of Chrono, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest in terms of plot progression. I'm not quite sure why the story was laid out the way it was, but if it was intentional, it was a serious mistake. As I mentioned previously, the JRPGs I've played in the past usually start with a bang. Blue Dragon starts with a fart...and I can imagine most people would start to clear out the room if they weren't good friends of the person who did it (Alimo, Op, and Jolli fall in this category, and Kenshin just can't find the door =P)
The story itself is enough to keep me going forward, but its the gameplay that makes it possible. If this game didn't have the enemy depth of the battle circle, or making opposing enemies fight each other, or the aspect of killing an enemy and getting another turn out it, I would not, could not go further. Not enough motivation. But its built up momentum in that regard, and I'm willing to say Sakaguchi did it right. I can say that if the combat in LO is as well thought out, I will definitely be interested in buying it, this year.

The storytelling from where I'm at so far with subtitles. I'd say I like it very much either way, but I can admit it isn't anything of legends so far. And rarely do you find things that are such nowadays anyway.
With that said though it most definitely still has its powerful moments where it will surprise people by giving them a bit more depth than they would've expected or something a bit darker than anticipated. When I think about all that has taken place in the game thus far. Blue Dragon is still very much in the early ramp up stages of its story and has plenty time yet to showcase what its all about. Since maru left his village to accompany us for example our very first objective was a clear one and upon arriving at that objective I was pretty surprised to say the least.
It serves to show that this adventure is only just getting started. The battle system though as you said though is a great way to break up the segments due to how fun it is and best of all you fight as many as you choose to aside from the moments where there just isn't any avoiding it. I think I'd definitely put it in the same group as ff or dq though. Really enjoying it and loving a number of the things I'm seeing.

Wasn't totally sure what was going on in japanese version. Not everyone might agree, but I think this game is really well organized.
This build up and all thats going on seems to be just perfect with what I know takes place later in story.
Definitely not 6 worthy if I were to review from what I have played thus far in usa version I'd say 8.6-8.7 lowest 8.4 and I know how much better near end of disc and some of disc 2 is, but I didn't understand what was being said so I wasn't toally understanding it all. Section of this game that most made get the feeling things were dragging was in that cave on my way to talta again since beginning part of game. I loved it at first, but then it started to get quite difficult in there so i started avoiding battles wherever I could and occasionally fighting to not seem lazy =P
I actually think the difficulty works perfectly for this game. Very well designed game just when you think you've seen about every trick the dev team had up its sleeve. You are hit with yet another great design decision. A sequel for this game is an absolute must. This is a strong debut for a jrpg if I ever saw one.

The entire scene at talta village camp was such a powerful moment i think. Only the most heartless would feel nothing there. Beautiful scenery nighttime moon in the sky, incredible incredible music... Uematsu showing he still has it. Just walking into a tent and seeing how unbelievable it looks visually inside one of those things. Seeing the people.. I barely know them only saw them at beginning of game and I feel close to them as if its really my responsiblity to take care of these people. Seeing Kluke sit their alone as everyone else meets up with their families and she has no mother, father nor grandfather to have worrying about her or happy to see that she's still alive. Mother and father giving their newborn child all this attention kluke right there to witness it.
Shu's "i'll never give up montra" is all the more clear now he idolizes his grandfather. The scene inside the tent with Jiro and his mother and father. Seeing their hands and how far they went to rescue him after the landshark incident. Jiro starts crying telling them he can't stop because there are still things he must do. Just an all around very powerful scene. This felt exactly like final fantasy VII at cosmo canyon with Red XIII possibly even better.
This baby is an instant classic for me. Scene definitely lost some of that emotion when I couldn't understand what was being said.
