I don't want them to team up. That would be like Halo 2/3 all over again. Bungie realized that Elites lost their teeth because they had to make them fit into the MP and because they were your "friends". I don't want Epic to do the same mistake.

In Gears I always played the Locust (whenever I had the choice). They're like creatures from hell there to ruin your day and that's what I was out to do whenever I played Gears. :)

They should drop the shitty matchmaking and do the lobby system of Gears 1 again, just with a flexible host like in CoD. MM is good if you do it the best way possible (the Bungie way), it's complete rubbish the way it works in in Gears 2.

I can see some kind of alliance with the Queen of the Locust happening as she has been working (i guess?) with Marcus father, but i agree this may cause Dom to go rouge and bad things to happen, but what i get from the trailer with Dom and Marcus is that Dom no longer cares about living as it looked like he was just waiting to be shot by the Locust, Marcus then jumped in to save his life and gave Dom a look that said 'WTF is you problem, pull your shit together'.

An alliance would be such a pussys way of sorting the story out.

Very interesting, i think they may choose to unveil the Locust origins and move the story on from there, i love Karen Traviss! her story telling is great and she really knows how bring characters to life, i'm so stoked so is the lead writer for this game.

I loved that development in Halo, so I can't fully agree with what Viginti is saying, but honestly, Gears is already retreading the Halo storyline so it wouldn't surprise me one bit if we're in Halo 2 territory with Gears 3.

The Lambent are The Flood already and The Locust Queen is like the prophets all mashed together and given a sexy cleavage. So I guess she's got a pair of.. prophets in a manner of speaking.

Gears 2 caught the fiction with its pants down it felt like. Suddenly they had to retroactively weave this more complex world and narrative, and looking over Halo's story shoulder you get the feeling that they bolted something together from scraps of old Halo conventions and twists.

It IS a nice device to sorta get a free card to expand the types of enemies in the game, because nowadays you're so tied down by fiction consistency and what you've already established, which feeds into diminishing returns with stuff like Halo too. You've seen Halo 1, you've seen pretty much everything they'll throw at you in terms of tech/locales, and 2 and 3 feel different degrees of reruns.

I mean Resident Evil kinda showed the world that if you have a virus, you have a shit ton of zany enemies just waiting to happen. No. Like, seriously. A bajillion zillion. What's up with this guy's tentacle mini gun head that shoots bees? Virus man. BIOLOGY GONE MENTAL, buddy. Look over there, missile breasts that explode and zombie dogs come out that breathe fire. Only it's acid, zombie fire.

To be fair though, Karen Traviss anchoring the story is promising. Does this mean we'll get some flashback missions? Possibly during the Pendulum Wars, or to fill the gap between Gears of War 2 and 3?

The second game's narrative was great at times - i.e. the way it was told - but the core of the story was weak. I'm hoping that Karen sorts it out for the finale, as I've heard nothing but good things about her novels based on the franchise.

For once I'd like the game to fully replicate the sheer bleak and atmospheric nature of the trailers. And please, please make it so that the ending doesn't bloody suck. The second game's campaign, as great as it was about 90% of the time, had a piss poor final boss battle.

I'd rather not have flashback missions. I find they only serve to disrupt the story in a game rather than reinforce it...even when the story is pretty thin to begin with.

Dumbest thing about Gears 2 (and it's a game of plenty dumb things) was how they managed to use their proportionally tiny chainsaws to get out of the gigantic rock worm. Deus Ex Machina much? Deus Ex Machine Saw at any rate.

At what stage of development are you for G3?

We're a year out. At this point, the campaign is fully playable. A lot of the co-op and multiplayer features are coming online. Previously, for Gears 2, our tagline was “Bigger, Better, More Bad-Ass,” which got played out very quickly. The key messages for Gears 3 are that it will be the best-looking, most fun Gears to date but it'll also be the most polished. And that's the beauty of holding it off until April. Holiday [timeframe for releases] is still so jammed so it's, like, let's carve out our own window like Will Smith used to do with July 4th. Let's call out our date and take the next year and just make a great game and polish it. Because the bar continues to be raised. There's some amazing games out there, from Uncharted 2 to Modern Warfare, and we need to exceed that bar [from where they raised it].

I'd have to agree the single player in both gears one and two are exceptionally well done. Easily one of the best new franchises this generation.

I'm not a HUGE gears fan as the MP is quite broken, but playing the campaign co-op or playing horde mode has been a superb experience. I just never put a ton of time into the game simply b/c the MP is so frustrating.

If they do fix the MP for good this time and raise the bar on the single player and co-op experience, I can only imagine how amazing gears 3 will be.

I think the reason why gears of war works is the coop element. As a standalone singleplayer game it lacks a good story and interesting characters. As a standalone MP title, its completely broken and janky. I think the reason I'll end up playing this game is because I wanna shoot stuff with my buddies. The story will most likely be pretty awful, but it won't matter because the coop will be a blast.

Completely disagree, before i even contemplate coop in Gears i play through the SP on my own so i can take in the whole epic experience and story on my own first, then i'll jump into coop with a friend and have a whole new ball of fun with my pals, and Horde with that's even more coop fun.
