Just finished watching. Well.. the combat indeed looks very "coarse". The hit detection seems not very accurate. But that would probably look different with a different player. After I played the first two games I didn´t care for the combat anyway. I don´t know why but I´m still not that impressed with the scale and the titans. It might be one of this things that affects you more by playing then watching. Judging would have been a lot easier if the vid hadn´t ended right at the beginning of the Poseidon fight, I guess. So let´s wait till we get some more complete gameplay.
I'm impressed by the scale, but yeah the combat system looks the same as the previous games, which I found pretty boring. I don't really like how Kratos just slides across the floor when he gets hit too.

Raptor: your opinion does not count, your bias is way to extreme. In fact i don't think the word "extreme" qualifies to describe your affection for Bayonetta ;)
My love for Bayonetta and now Jeanne as nothing to do with the fact that the game has amazing initial credits and original aswell.

Ok so I played the demo on the PSN......

I had played GOW 1 and 2 on the PS2. I couldn't go past the first level. I had already played NG, and then NG back on Xbox, there was no way I could take that crap. So I downloaded the demo for this to see what it was all about.

I'm sorry but what is wrong with you??!?!? Talk about senseless button mashing, it feels incredibly weak. I got a ~120 combo by spamming the same attack over and over. Also, who's idea was it to roll with the right stick? And who thought grabbing those birds using another awkward button combination was cool? Graphics are cool, and so are the animations, the scale, and QTE sequences. But those are technical and presentation things.

Presentation stuff is cool, but to my standards this game is nothing special. We've got another case of MGS4. A game that is worth playing through, but you can't tell me with a straight face it amounts to great gameplay, and I thought that's what it's all about. Weak weak weak.

it is great gameplay for me, but then people like bayonetta and NG both gameplay and presentation wise, which i'll never quite understand. people like different things when it comes to this genre i guess. some like the "combat combat combat" of bayonetta, i prefer a slightly more rounded package that has a bit more meat on it's bones. for me GOW isnt just about the combat, never has been, it's about the explerience. i LIKE the combat becasue it IS accessible, but i like the platforming and puzzles just as much if not more so (not really present in the demo), the presentation is what keeps all those elements together which as you said, is amazing.

i can see why some wouldnt like GOW tho, in the same way i can see why some wouldnt like MGS4, thankfully i'm not one of those people and those series/games can safely be filed under "masterpeices" for me.

I might have misunderstood you, but did you just call NG crap?
Don't say a game is crap because you cant beat it. I beat it, and so did alot of people. I remember it took me atleast 4 tries on Normal when I started playing NG for the first time.

If you couldnt beat it, you should have just taken Ninja Dog (easy) and then go pass level 1 ;)

I think a lot of what seperates the GoW fans from the NG/Bayo fans is not only gameplay but what entertains someone and how much. For me, seeing Kratos rip the head off a gigantic monster has pretty much zero entertainment factor. The whole "gore" thing doesn't really bring much excitment IMO. I think some people are very entertained by the spectacle that is GoW and that drives the game for them a lot. Others, like me or Sath (i'm assuming), are far more entertained by the challenge and depth of the gameplay. If I'm in a really intense battle with a very rewarding style of challenge (not cheap but still really hard) then that for me is the "white knuckle" effect in a video game. Like being in a really intense and well balanced MP game, you just feel you heart pumping.

GoW offers platforming, puzzles and combat but all on a level so easy and basic that it's hard for me to enjoy anything but the first playthrough, but the first time through is always really fun simply b/c the game does offer a lot of style and cool setpieces, even if they are quite silly at times.

A game like NG feels so dynamic that no two battles ever really feel the same other than the boss battles, which can be a chore at times for sure.

I don't think there is any fair way to say either game is a "better" game though, as they offer much different things to much different types of players. I'm just glad I enjoy both games, even if I do admittedly like one style much more than the other.

Both are great fun, one just offers a lot more replay value IMO. But I think they both deserve a ton of credit each in their own ways.

I'm pretty sure Lebato meant that after playing ninja gaiden, he couldn't go back to using the weak combat system in god of war.

Meh, I guess. But as hard as it might be for some to believe, I consider gameplay above all. If the gameplay isn't there, I'm not there either. Nietzsche brings a good point, I do think many people must enjoy the spectacle that GOW is. I think at that point you are having fun from watching rather than actually playing. It's all about how things are presented, and how much enjoyment you get out of that which in my case it's not much. I have said it before, but the famous MGS4 motorcyle chase scene is an awful gameplay sequence by all means, but somehow it is some people's favorite part of the game. I thought it was enjoyable, but if they had made it into a straight up cutscene I would think the same. Also, these kind of things are a good one time thing. There is no surprises the second time around, you already know what you are going to see, what's going to happen. At this point you are left with the gameplay to keep you entertained, and that's why I really have no interest to play through MGS4 again. So great packages, but not great games.

While I can certainly appreciate the gameplay > all sentiment, and I've been saying as much of myself at multiple occasions, I think the appeal of God of War is difficult to even measure the same way as a more technical action game.

I mean you're welcome to not enjoy it, obviously, but making GoW more complex wouldn't benefit anyone, it's simply not that kind of game.

God of War in terms of core combat is very arcadey game and has more in common with a horizontal/vertical shoot em up than something like Ninja Gaiden. God of War is all about patterns, and whether the moves you throw out are complex or difficult to time or not, it has more to do with positioning and "keep firing". Bosses especially make it even more obvious how you need to constantly change position into the safe zones while the boss does its crazy death beams of death equivalent, and winning or losing to the game's various challenges is almost always about context. Even its QTE's, converted enough times into vague principle speak is about context.

Then you have this platformer and puzzle game wrapped around it to the point where, if that was emphasised more, you'd almost have a Zelda type situation. Zelda has even simpler, even MORE positioning based combat, but as a game it has substantial enough elements around it that it overall just benefits that balance.

The perfect game isn't Halo shooting + Virtua Fighter melee + Forza driving sections + Ace Combat flight sections + a Shenmue environment, and I think we all know that much. If you're like "hell yeah!" then you prolly just aren't thinking very far. That's like expecting Schindler's List drama in Terminator 2. Elements that are too extreme are like oil and water, and in order to bridge them they need to meet half-way.

This is a reply to Lebato's post, and I'm using that as jump off point, but it's not that I disagree so wildly with his post that I went of on this rant. I simply think that comparisons to what are effectively combat focused games are unfair, when GoW is really in a different school of game alltogether.

And that's not just to say that GoW puts more emphasis on its cutscenes, I mean fundamentally as a game. 3D and 3rd person cameras have unified the look of games, making it a harder call to make than simply looking at Gradius and Ace Combat, but you can still identify how hopelessly different games are at the core, and when you realise that it seems forfeit to make the comparison.

Totally agree. It does look amateurish. The Posing is very poor, and the animators seem to have no concept of pacing. I do like the style of it though...

Hades weapon and that nemesis whip that glows green, looked pretty cool.
But I need to see more of it, proper longer videos, not snippets.

PS. Sex games...what a fucking childish bullshit of devs to put it in there! Its disgusting that they put such a GIMMICK into a game that it isnt even neccessary at all.
I thought Rachel is stripper outfit in NG was bad but this just tops of it.

Yeah lets talk about the sex mini games and how satistfying thats going to be like or how visuals are...because thats whats so important right?
If I wanted to watch sex I would watch porn instead and not some idiotic gimmick in a video game. Just to show you how desperate devs are to focus in a specific audiance.

*sigh*

Sadly what really frustrates me about the GoW series isnt the game play or what not. Personally i really enjoyed the kung fu panda game, and Ninja Gaiden Black was as close to a gaming orgasm as i ever got. Games have different gameplays and cater to different audiences...

NOW what GOW should be ashamed of, and why those devs should burn in proverbial hell for, is for having the balls to say they know cookie squat about greek mythology...
I was a fan of greek mythology since the legends of olympus was the first book i read on my own as a kid and i even took classes in college on the subject for my electives.
Now the crap story in GoW has such a misleading portrayal of the gods and their interactions with humans it disgusts me that the devs dared to set this game into that setting.

And those are my 2 cents. I commend Bayonetta for at least trying to create some sort of story (altho a very weak one).

the devs have alwasy said the games where LOOSELY based on greek mythology. so as far as i'm concerned, they're free to do what they want. hell, the idea of a human killing off gods is kinda zany as far as greek mythology goes, but the game would be pretty rubbish if you got completely owned by the very first god you came across and the credits rolled...lol or even crappier. a spartan having same sex ralations which they did VERY frequently. sure the sex minigame is kinda lame, but it's a staple of GOW and at least it's with women. if that was a real depiction of spartan life he's be sodomising a young boy lover. yeah. can't say i want that tbh. lol
