GT is most popular sim but still everyone was hoping for 90 I think and it has not won too many new fans. Otherwise sales would be more

First of all I have to say that this game is completely retarded when it comes to certain design decisions. Seriously, this guy Yamauchi flat out sucked ass in this. There's so much crap that is just wrong and unacceptable in this game it's not even funny. So I wonder, where the heck do I start?
Game progression sucks ass. So where the heck is it anyways? Some random event gives me X experience and some coins, while another gives me nothing substantial, and I then I win the most useless standard car I can win. At times you may win a freaking color, or a stupid ass horn. Are you kidding me? It just feels offending. At the end of the day, I feel like I haven't done a thing. And in fact I haven't. At ~level 18, the grinding begins. It's like a great RPG, except this one sucks ass and is no fun.
License tests w/ AI are stupid shit. I'm not about to waste hours and hours of my time trying to perfect the most convenient way to evade 12 stupid AI. Touch them game over, but is it consistent? No! Some times you can almost ram into them, then at other times THEY barely touch you and it's game over. This isn't racing, these are obstacle courses.
There's no sense of reward most of the time. Sure, once in a while you feel like you get something, but 90% of the time it's all disappointment. Why the hell even bother with so many cars when you can not even afford them, or do anything with them? Does it matter that this game has the Ferrari F1 car? Does it? Not it doesn't, I still don't know if I'll ever own the car because the game is so stupid that it doesn't give me any means to get it. Sure, I can save money and get that one car(s) I like, but then what, my whole career is fucked because I'm out of money. I can have fun and tune a car, but guess what, my career takes a huge hit because everything is extremely expensive. When I have to buy a car to get into an event because I no choice, upgrade it, and race three races and only get 1/8th of my investment back--that's stupid and not fun.
Some things just don't make sense. In the many half-assed rally events this game has. Why the shit do I need to wait for three idiots in front of me to line up, rev their engines and then drive away. It takes about a minute for me to get started while the AI controlling my car glitches and steps on the brake 1 million times per second, what was Yamauchi thinking, or was he? Who thought it would be fun to race the top gear track with VW mini buses and be disqualified for f**** touching a damn cone? Why can't I buy dirt tires for my car? Who came up with the horrible cut-scenes?
Now this one deserves it own little paragraph. This game rarely gives you split times per sector. This is a huge drawback, a huge omission. When I need to race the whole freaking Nurburgring, just to find out after 7 minutes of racing that I failed to get gold, this is unacceptable. Any decent simulator/driving game will give you sector by sector times and compare to your best lap. I've noticed at random events/tracks it'll give me split times, so why the heck is this not standardized? Oh I guess that wouldn't be GT5.
Sounds. What a freaking joke. When fanboys claim GT cars sound like a vacuum, they are freaking right! Seriously, they got an acceptable engine sound here and there, but everything else is downright pathetic. Whether the car is standard or premium they all pretty much sound like ass. Combine this with some Jazz music that just gets on your nerves as you move through the menus, and the most anticlimactic crash sounds I've heard in a long while--this game just fails in the sound department--FAILS.
Let's talk about UI. What a mess! Fuck! I have to go through a million awkward menus with 5 second loading times in between exiting and entering different areas--because nothing is readily available. I have to pretty much enter all the non-raced A-Spec events to find out if I have a car that qualifies for the event? Really, isn't there a better way? Is this really the best you could come up with? And then when I do have a car, I have to exit/enter out of 10 menus just to upgrade my car, or install some dirt tires. But guess what, I can not install dirt tires on this car, and I had to go through 10 menus to find out. Good news is the game will let you buy the dirt tires even though you can not install/use them--yeah, the game is stupid like that. Getting cars must be fun, I mean it's a new car! Well not in GT5. You just know you'll get a crappy car, and you know it'll take about 15 seconds for you to receive it while you wait in between loading times and the most atrocious reward car screen I've seen in any racing game.
Let's talk graphics now, "OMG TEH REAL!!?!?!?" Well no. Let's get it straight. Premium cars are the best out there, that's it. If not for the modelling, for the details. For example, while in Forza 3 the cockpit looks plain, as if the whole car interior was made of the same material, with very little differences in material, GT5 does a great job by putting tons of detail here. I really don't see much if any more overall geometry, but it's the detail in texture work. With that said the rest of it is damn disappointing. Many tracks belong to the era of PS2. The only difference I see is higher resolution. But that can't hide much. Has anyone seen the rally tracks in this game? Top Gear track? Laguna Seca? Trial Mountain? X? Y? Did you think you were seeing a high res PS2 game? I did. I haven't seen such lazy texture work, repeated over a million teams in the most perfectly awful looking stretch of square bushes. Cloned 2d trees lined up right next to the track one after the other, perfectly symmetrical to each other. Awful texture seams, sharp edges everywhere from railing to the track. They claimed 16 cars on track--something rarely seen in the actual game, and barely playable at what seems to be sub 20 fps. You can stand in awe at the most amazing photomode screen, or a replay in the night, but when it comes down to it, this game looks worst on average than Forza 3.
Is there really something this game does as good or better than Forza 3? Oh yeah there is, there isn't much I'll be honest here. The area I didn't believe in much is what has made the game playable, otherwise I wouldn't be playing right now. This game has physics as good as those in Forza 3. Some cars drive pathetic though, and this game, like Forza 3 has its problems with physics. One area in which this game really does well is the way the suspension interacts with the track. You do feel like the track is a lot more bumpy, and at times it's really important to keep an eye on this as bumps will easily throw you off of corners in tracks like Nurburgring. I really love this area. Replays look great.
Uh......I think that's all I have to say. Please remind me if I missed some amazing part of this game, or if I haven't reached it, or if I'm doing it wrong. Maybe I'll unlock awesomeness after unlocking damage (lol, another brilliant idea by Yamauchi). The game is playable, it's to a point enjoyable thanks to the actual driving. I would never say it's as bad as Shift or the like, but to compare GT5 with Forza 3--by far the best driving game this generation--is not even fair for GT5. To think it took almost 6 years, and to see how this game just fell so flat it's not even funny.
Look at it objectively, I'd like to see anyone defend any of the dumb ass design decisions, game progression, etc this game has.
