It'll be immersive as long as you don't crash a non-premium car.........

Jokes aside, we've seen this stuff on PC games for long time now, the fact an extraoridnarily small amount of people use these things. It just isn't that great really. While it is cool, I don't see how a three screen setup can be beat by this. In that sense, it's even more realistic since you are not limited by one screen. Not only that, but the fact is that if anything, they would need to track your eyes, not your head. Basically, you'll need to move your head to the side, but your eyes would still need to focus on a static point (the TV), making for a bit of an awkward feeling.

Sure, that depends on how sensitive it is to head movement, but if it is too sensitive, that creates problems as well, I'm sure I don't need examples? So it's a nice feature, nonetheless limited in use and reach.

Maybe, but its a consoles first and that is already mentioned in article above. And it doesn't matter how many people would or would not use it. GT5 already feature-set is unbeaten in its existing features, this feature is 1UP and as an option will always be there. Moreover, its greatness is everybody's personal opinion... I'd enjoy it as its only in cockpit view and will not effect the driving.
Its infact, better than Test Drive's analog stick camera rotation mechanic, that totally disorientates the driving. In GT5, your hands will only work on driving and as neatly your camera pans or rotates with slight head movements. Immersiveness guaranteed!

Of course it matters, they are spending resources on something which 90% of the gaming community won't use.

eye tracking would be a terrible idea. remember you are still using a static 2Dimentional means to view the game itself, head tracking alows you to look into corners while still keeping your focus on the centre of the screen itself, if you're moving your eyes around then you wont be able to focus on the centre screen, making for an incredibly crappy experience. head tracking is definately the way to go, and i think it will make for a pretty damn awesome way to play the game. may even get me to buy a PSeye.

So what? Triple screen setup and available for all to use is also a console first, and so it is visible tire flex......doesn't mean that, 1) a very limited amount of people will use it (triple screen), and 2) very few will even realize it is there (tire flex).
And it doesn't matter how many people would or would not use it.
No it doesn't matter that much, I guess you are right there.
GT5 already feature-set is unbeaten in its existing features
I did not see that one coming.

Yeah, you are still locked down to one screen. I mentioned eyetracking because that's how it goes in real life, and of course, with only one tv in front of you, it's really not going to work. With one screen in front of you, it simply does not work very well either way.

You said the head tracking allows you to look into corners while keeping your focus on the screen, but I think that's only partly right. You'll move your head to the sides, but your eyes will still have to focus on the center of the screen. I think I've said it all in the other post.

I think a three screen setup is better (360 degrees would be even better)--yet even more limiting. I don't know how you can beat that. You look to your left and you see what's on the left without missing out entirely on what's going on in front of you--just like in real life yay!, try that with head tracking and one screen. But hey, we'll see when it comes out, maybe it's not that bad.

Gimmick.

I have the PSEye and there is no way im setting it up just for that.

Now if they could implement head tracking on those 3D glasses that would be something to be talking about.
Since motion doesn't need to scale linearly it has the potential to work well, especially with larger screens. If/when cameras become cheap and packaged with every unit this could be a subtle but immersive feature in games. I know I want it for FM3

I'm not denying it's kind of cool, that still doesn't change the fact that most won't bother with it.

It's kind of like saying 1080p is a great feature when you are playing on a SDTV, sure they could bundle the camera in but what if you don't want to pay the extra cost ?

From the translation (confirmed by Yamauchi):

“…the movement of Cockpit Camera interface (confirmed in full 3-D. The camera can be fully manipulated and you can opt to have your head tracked by the PSEye)”

More on this terrific 3D feature here:

This could be reason for many to buy the PSEye finally... Enjoy ;)

@ lebato, that's exactly what i mean when i say it would work fine.

i mean, turn your head while focusing on this ***

your eyes can still EASILY keep centre focus on one point while the camera tracks you're head movements. the centre point being the screen, the head tracking being the in-game camera movements. if it tracked your eyes you would have to look beyond the screen to look left and right, but the moment you do that you are no longer focusing on the screen itself...you're basically driving blind.

sure a 3 screen set up is better (ignoring the breaks inbetween screens) but really, who has 3 screens and the space to set them up in such a way, this PSeye method is just a far more conveinient way of handing this sort of thing. and based on the tech demo's, i'm confident it will work great and surprise everyone.

as for buying the PSeye, you can get it for 30 quid with eyepet bundled with it, bargain. might even grab it now since eye-pet looks like a pretty awesome novelty experience.

I see what you mean yeah, and yes, tracking your eyes now sounds pretty stupid. The whole point of these things (Headtracking, 3-screens) is that they add immersion right? There is a reason the air force uses full-on cockpits, or at the very least panoramic setups (3+screens), for training. It is simply the best solution, the most realistic way to go. Wherever you look, it's what you see, and it's there regardless of if you are looking. No matter what, one screen is very limiting.

An excellent example of head-tracking in a racing game(its not GT5 but the concept is very vividly expressed here):

Insane destruction footage here, actually the original that first showed damage. the vid is made in a way to show the most out of interaction of environmental objects, their physics and car's destruction etc.

Both Polyphony Digital and Turn 10 have made a tribute video each(usng their respective game engines) for the new Ferrari 458 Italia. This car was presented for the first time at the 2009 International Motor Show. I must say that both trailers look great, but PD's video is clearly better, for it truly shows the car as in a mature, developed showcase and awesome soundtrack, while T10's video looks more of an advertisement for Forza 3 and track decision is quite arcady.

Anyways, both use game-engine with specific enhancements each, and plz enjoy them they are great!:

PD will always have more style than Turn 10, that isn't in question I think. Even if that GT vid isn't in-game, which I greatly doubt it is, it's a far far superior trailer to the Forza 3 one of the same car. The music is also much better.

What Turn 10's racing title seems to lack in style though, I think they more than makes up for in substance.

I think they have their priorities each--I prefer T10's, some might not obviously, and that doesn't make PD's priorities a bad choice, but IMO not the best. Turn10 will never make a trailer, or an intro as cool as PD's, I still remember the GT1 intro for example. But then again, PD trailers/intros are NEVER representative of even replay footage. I don't care what anyone says. I've seen them all, and it is that way.

Intros/trailers are not representative of replay footage, and replay footage is not representative of gameplay--this last one being true for FM as well. Even when they might share some of the assets from actual gameplay, these two add their certain flare that brings the wow factor to a whole new level. With that said, I can't wait for GT, specially if they do have dynamic time of day and weather. These two I think are the areas in which GT might really outshine FM--but they are yet to be confirmed.
